"There he is," I squealed a few hours later, listening to the doorbell ring.
"I'll get it!" My mom said, rushing to the door.
"The boyfriend? Is that him?" My dad asked, running out of his room. He emphasized the word "boy" as he popped his head out of the room. I nodded, smiling. But on the inside, I was a little nervous. I've always been Daddy's Little Girl, meaning Daddy doesn't take too well to me having boyfriends.
"Yes, Dad. And I need you to be on your best behavior, okay?" I asked him.
"Of course, Sweetheart. When have I not been?" He exclaimed, faking his hurt and surprise. I hugged him, kissing his cheek before suggesting we go downstairs. He told me he wasn't ready, but I could go when I was ready.
"Ponyboy!" My mom suddenly screamed from the front of the house. She did it again, but my dad didn't respond.
"Oh,," I said, putting my hands on my hips, "And when have you not been on your best behavior around my boyfriends? David, Andy, George, Paul, Mike... Should I keep going? Because you wanted to meet them all, and then they all broke up with me the next day. I guess they weren't worth it, but Daddy, I really really like this guy," I said. He laughed.
"Then I guess I'm doing my job," he joked, but the look of horror on my face must have changed his mind. "Don't worry, Hope. It'll be fine," he said, smiling at me reassuringly. I nod.
"Promise?"
"Ponyboy!" My mom screamed again, before my dad could respond. I looked at my dad, and we both ran down the stairs, rushing into the living room. Seeing that there were people here, we walked like normal people to the door, although my mom looked terrified.
"Lydia, what's wro-," he started. Then he stopes, in the middle of his sentence. In the middle of his word.
"Dad?" I asked. He was frozen, staring at our guests in the doorway.
"Eli! You guys are here... Uh, come on in. I'm sorry about them. Uh, they haven't had people over in a while," I excused my parents, lamely. Eli's parents walked in, smiling at me. Something was wrong, I just didn't know what.
"I don't want them in my house." My father declared. I looked up at him, horrified, but didn't say a word.
"Well, well, well... If it isn't Ponyboy Curtis and little Lydia Chase. You two have a nice house. Surprising... Hey, aren't you a little young to have a teenage daughter?" His mother asked. I gasp. That's when I know that I've done something wrong. I just don't know what. I didn't know another parent could talk so rude to someone they seemingly just met. I wondered how Eli's mom knew my parents names, it seemed weird.
"Do you guys know each other?" I asked my mom. No response.
"I'd say you guys are a little bit old yourselves to have a 16 year old," my mom fired back at Eli's mother. I looked at her. She's old, with curly hair that's brown and graying at the same time. My mom still shouldn't have called her old, though.
She had the same chocolate brown eyes that Eli does and they look all too familiar, yet I still couldn't place where they're from. I looked to Eli for help. Maybe he knew what was going on. He came over and placed his arm around me. I snuggled into him, and my parents stared. I felt the tension in the room, I just couldn't tell what was happening. Everything seemed wrong. I invited my boyfriend over to meet my parents, and mom had the bright idea of bringing his parents too, look where that got us. I wanted to scream. But first, I wanted to know what was going on. Apparently, so did Eli.
"What's going on?" He whispered to me.
"I'm not sure," I responded, looking at his features. I tried desperately hard to figure out right then where I had seen that face before, any little reason my parents could know his.
"Well, Jon, I'm not sure about you, sweetie, but I don't think we can have dinner in some dirty rotten greaser's house," Eli's mother said to her husband. And that's when it hit me. I knew exactly what was going on right then and there.
"Mom! That's my girlfriend and her family," Eli defended.
"She isn't good for you, Eli. We'll find you a good girl instead. A rich girl. A Soc," his mother said. I could feel the fire in my dad's eyes as he glared angrily at these people, because no one talks about his little girl like that. I felt like I was going to cry. I couldn't believe any of this was happening.
"Well, what if I don't want a Soc, Mom? What if I want Hope?" His grip on me tightens, and I know immediately where I've seen those looks before. I couldn't believe I didn't see it before, as it seemed so clear in this moment.
"Your brother," I whispered. He looked at me weirdly. Confusion was written all over his face.
"I don't have a brother." I raised an eyebrow, then clear my throat. I stopped for a second, trying to figure out if I should say anything. Obviously, Mom and Dad knew. But apparently, Eli didn't. I wondered how much telling everyone my discovery would hurt him, but I figured I'd have to do it anyways. Sooner or later he'd find out anyways, right?
"Mom. Dad. This is my boyfriend Elliot. I call him Eli. Eli Cade," I said, looking my parents both in the eye. I mentally cursed myself for not seeing it before. Not realizing it the day I met him. It should have been so clear, just like it is now.
Elliot Cade's brother was Johnny Cade. The boy my biological father died for. Of course I had to fall for this kid...
A/N: This chapter, with my baby Eli, was the reason this story was created. I was trying to create an interesting character, and Elliot Cade became. But I like to keep the book as is, especially since this takes place in the future, so it has to be his brother. Was anyone expecting it?
Anyways, this'll be my last update for a few days, so I hope you enjoyed! If any of you will be at Darien Lake on Saturday for the Sabrina Carpenter concert, maybe we can meet up! I'd love to meet some of my readers/followers. Love you guys! Hope you enjoyed this update.
