Chapter 3 | Imperfects and Oricorios
Izzy yelped as she landed on hard rocky ground when expelled from the wormhole. She lifted her head just in time to see Omoiyari land on all fours next to her. He was breathing very heavily and raggedly.
When seeing Izzy, the beast swiftly helped her to her feet and demanded in a panicky voice, "Izzzie, are you alright?! Are you hurt?!"
"I-I'm ok," she stammered, lightning back shock a relief to see her father. "Omoiyari, how did you find us, where are we...?"
"That isn't important, we need to get back through the wormhole!"
But right when they turned back to face the wormhole, the large crack shrank and blinked out of existence. There was no sign that it had ever been there.
"Omoiyari-" Izzy began tearfully, but he waved his hand to silence her. He approached the spot where the crack vanished. Omoiyari's antennas charged with electricity and his large eyes glowed a brighter yellow. He seemed to be trying to call back the wormhole.
For the first time, Izzy looked around at their surroundings. The area was very misty and dark. While the air in the Celesteela world was rather dry, the air in this place was moist, almost like the Kartana's world. From what she could see, there was a vast field of pretty red plants a short ways behind them.
A frightening roar from Omoiyari made the girl wince. She turned to see sparks fly from his antennas and his pupils in his eyes disappear from the yellow glow. Then the glow and electricity stopped, the great beast collapsed from exhaustion. The small crack that he managed to summon then popped out of existence like the other one.
"Omoiyari!" Izzy cried, running to her guardian's side. "Omoiyari, what's wrong?"
"I...I can't seem to be able to pull it all the way back," her guardian panted. "I don't understand, my power is usually stronger than this... I'm so sorry, Izzzie... until the wormhole some how comes back or my power comes back, we're stuck in this world..."
Izzy felt like her stomach had turned to ice. Stuck? Here? In a world of vicious imperfects? It was terrible thinking that they may never go back home.
"Y-You shouldn't be the one who's sorry," Izzy finally sniffed. "I-It's all my fault... I touched the wormhole, I didn't listen to you... I'm sorry, Omoiyari..."
Omoiyari didn't say anything, but his gaze didn't leave her face. After a moment, he finally replied, "I should've kept a closer eye on you. A part of me felt that you wouldn't listen to me and go near the wormholes anyway. I should've been more careful.
"But moping, isn't going to save us," The beast finished, a small reassuring smile reappearing on his face while he stood up shakily. "Come on, up you get."
"You're not mad?" The young girl squeaked as Omoiyari scooped her up in his arms and placed her on his back.
"I can't stay mad at you for long," he told her quietly. "You're my little beast. We can talk about this later. Now let's get some help if we can."
"Ok..."
With that said, Omoiyari began to stride toward the meadow of red plants that were ahead. Izzy hugged her knees as her guardian carried her through the mist. It was so dark and chilly. She could her odd buzzing noises and occasionally a few chirps.
They soon found a strange bridge of wood that stretched over the field of red plants. Omoiyari slowly moved onto the bridge though he hissed nervously as the high walk creaked. When he got his whole body on the bridge, he began to walk at a slower pace.
"Omoiyari?" Izzy began after awhile, looking around fearfully for other signs of life. "Do you think there will be other imperfects here?"
"This is their world, so I'm very sure there is at least one imperfect in the area. If not, we can ask a local Pokemon."
"W-What's a Pokemon?" the young girl asked, fearfully thinking of huge malicious creatures like a Guzzlord.
"They are the creatures that share this world with humans," Omoiyari explained while scanning the area for other living beings. "They are a lot like us beasts, but there are much more of them than there is of us. They are also more inclined to help each other and work side by side with humans. Ah, here are some now."
Izzy straightened up and craned her neck to see what Omoiyari was talking about. On the side of the bridge, there were several strange tiny creatures gathered there. Most of them were red with black stripes, following the motions of a similar shaped one but which had violet and light blue colors.
"What are those?" Izzy questioned once again, eyeing the strange beings as the violet one chirped instructions to her red and black comrades.
"If I'm not mistaken, it's a type of Pokemon called Oricorio," the beast answered, quickening his steps so he could meet with the Pokemon. "They are native to these islands. But I'm surprised that there is the violet Oricorio here if we are where I think we are."
Just as he became within the birds eye sights, he greeted them, "Pardon me, but may I have a word with you all?"
The moment the Oricorios looked at Omoiyari, they all squawked with fright and hid behind the violet one. The violet Oricorio was the only one not to jump with fright or squawk. She instead looked up at Omoiyari in an almost friendly manner and responded back, "Well I don't think I have ever seen your kind around here."
"You wouldn't," Omoiyari agreed, bowing his head. "We are new to this area."
The violet Oricorio cocked her head and looked around the beast before asking, "What were you doing near the ruins?"
"I'm sorry?"
"You were lurking around the path to the Lake of the Moone. No Pokemon goes near there."
"We were, uh, touring it."
The violet Oricorio said nothing, but she didn't seem to believe him. A second later, she turned to the red Oricorios and called, "Our lesson for today is done, ladies! Remember to practice your stretches!"
The red birds chirped in acknowledgement before jumping off the side of the bridge and into the red plants. Once they were all gone, the violet Oricorio turned back to face Omoiyari and asked calmly, "What do you need?"
"We need directions, specifically where we are," Omoiyari explained with some relief. "It's a long story, but we came here on accident and we're trying to get home. We are in the region of Alola, correct?"
"Yes, this is Ula'ula Island," The bird told him, looking quite surprised. "The place you two are in right now is Ula'ula Meadow. You must be very lost if you don't know what island you're on."
"But we don't live in this world!" piped up Izzy. "We're from a different dimension!"
Omoiyari winced very little, but Izzy was completely undisturbed that she revealed something unhelpful. The violet Oricorio looked concerned now as she looked from Izzy to Omoiyari.
"Well...if you say so..." the bird started before lowering her gaze slightly to see Omoiyari and continued, "The nearest settlement in straight ahead. Do not go back toward the other path behind you, that town is full of mischievous and bad humans. Also, I would get help for your trainer, she seems a little confused."
"I'm not confused!" Izzy announced angrily, but Omoiyari spoke over her loudly and told the bird, "Right, of course, thank you very much!"
He then swiftly passed the Oricorio and began to walk at a quicker pace. Izzy looked back to see the violet bird chuckle before leaping into the red plants after her companions.
"Why did she call me a trainer?" The young girl asked Omoiyari as he continued to carry her while striding down the high bridge. "What is a trainer anyway?"
"Trainers are owners of Pokemon that care and bond with them through battles," Omoiyari explained to her. "Imperfects often start their journeys to raise Pokemon at your age. She assumed that you were my trainer since they are so common."
"Why would imperfects make their Pokemon battle other Pokemon?"
"The same reason the beasts battled each other back home. It makes the beasts feel alive, and it's a sport for them. I assume trainers and Pokemon feel the same way, but it strengthens their bonds of trust with each other."
Izzy still didn't understand. Pokemon were imperfects' friends, yet they were thrown into battle and beaten. How does tat make a Pokemon's trust for an imperfect grow?
The young girl continued to contemplate the strange bond between imperfects and Pokemon until Omoiyari suddenly stopped in his tracks. Izzy could see his antennas flashing and vibrating.
"Omoiyari, what's wrong?" Izzy asked, looking around through the fog to see what had stopped him.
"We are being followed," Omoiyari hissed while staying perfectly still. "Duck down and don't make any noise..."
Izzy obeyed and lowered her head so no one could see her on Omoiyari's back. She felt him shuffling around and turning in circles.
A second later, there was a loud shriek as something pounced out of the red plants below the bridge. Omoiyari roared and swiped at the feline creature as it tried to claw at him. The creature leapt backward and sent a dark beam of light rushing toward them.
Izzy screamed and ducked again while Omoiyari sent a orb of crackling electricity at the beam. The attacks collided and exploded, leaving much smoke in its place. The young girl felt Omoiyari's back slant as she slid off.
"Into the flowers, Izzy!" Her guardian pleaded as he nudged her along. "It's just the one Persian, you will be safe below!"
"But-"
"Don't argue with me!"
Izzy looked up at her guardian's face. His expression was full of fear, and Izzy knew that she had already caused enough trouble today. She didn't need to add to his stress. The girl then leapt into the red plants, or 'flowers', and ducked down so no one could see her.
Once the smoke cleared, Izzy was amazed to see that the Pokemon was no longer alone. A tall bipedal creature like herself stood behind the Persian.
An imperfect.
"Persian, Dark Pulse!" The imperfect ordered in a much lower voice. It must be a male imperfect, a much, much older imperfect than Izzy.
The feline roared and sent rings of darkness toward the beast at the imperfect's command. Omoiyari swiftly used his long scaly fingers to scratch through the rings, making the attack get pulled to shreds. For some reason, the beast seemed reluctant to attack back.
"You must move out of here!" the imperfect told Omoiyari quite calmly yet sternly, causing the beast to hiss with fury. "I will not allow you go near the settlements! Go back to where you came from!"
However Omoiyari stood his ground and refused to move. When the beast showed no sign of leaving, the imperfect thrust out his arm and bellowed, "Then I have no choice but to force you out!"
The Persian roared as something on the man's wrist began to glow. Izzy watched in amazement as he moved his arms in a peculiar way. When he stopped, a great blast of light shot out of the thing on the man's wrist. The aura surrounded the chubby feline and caused it to glow through the fog. It let out a loud roar as it sent a dark orb of energy up into the air.
Izzy gasped with fright as the orb opened up like a portal and began sucking everything nearby to it. She could see Omoiyari digging his long fingers into the wooden bridge, but Izzy could see that the planks were shaking from the great blast of wind.
A second later, the bridge broke and the part of the bridge Omoiyari was on was sucked into the orb. Izzy screamed and cried, "OMOIYARI!"
She knew she had just given away her position, but she didn't care. The orb that had just sucked her guardian's inside suddenly exploded. She watched in horror as bits and chunks of the wooden walkway fell to the ground, along with the beast, who landed in the field of flowers with a huge thud.
Before Izzy could get up and run to Omoiyari, she felt something smash into the top of her head. She blacked out just as she saw the feline creature of the imperfect's leap into the flowers to run toward her.
*~*~*
"Have you found any possible identity?"
"None, she doesn't match any trainer we have on file. Heck, I don't think she's even a trainer. Judging by her clothes, she's most likely a hobo."
"I guess it's possible, but her dress... this isn't fabric, Nanu. This is similar to shedded skin of a reptile Pokemon. Ula'ula Meadow doesn't contain Pokemon with this kind of skin. Also, whatever shed this skin is larger than any scaled Pokemon I'm aware of."
Izzy opened her eyes at the sound of voices. She didn't understand what was being said. What did they mean by her dress? Izzy carefully looked around to see that she was laying on a long piece of furniture with slabs on the end. It was quite soft, like the flat material covering her. Her scaly dress Omoiyari had made her was replaced by something similar, but it was not as rough. It went to her waist instead of her knees, and she also wore a silky material from the waist down.
She was in a bright room full of sunlight because of the glass all across the opposite wall. There were many shelves filled with the same kind of objects. Ahead of her were two tall imperfects near the window. One of them, an imperfect female that looked alike like Izzy, was holding the girl's scaly dress while running her hand around the scale prints. The other imperfect, to Izzy's horror, was the imperfect that had attacked Omoiyari.
The air got caught in Izzy's throat. What had he done to Omoiyari? It was clear that her guardian wasn't here, otherwise he would be right beside her. Did he hurt him? Was Omoiyari...
The imperfects clearly weren't watching Izzy, for their backs were facing her. Izzy slowly straightened up and looked around for a way out. Her heart leapt as she saw a rectangular exit to the right of the imperfects. If she was very quiet, they wouldn't notice her until she was at the exit.
Izzy slowly pulled herself up and quietly swung her legs off the furniture. She flinched as her feet touched the cold floor. Not taking her eyes off the two imperfects, she got to her feet and slowly edged toward the door. She was amazed at how stupid the imperfects were.
But then she did not notice that there was a small wooden rod laying on the ground where she was stepping. When her foot landed on it, it rolled and grinded against the floor. The noise made Izzy wince, and both noises caught the attention of the older imperfects.
They both turned to see Izzy, both looking quite surprised to see the young girl up and about. Izzy did not wait to see what they would do next, for she pelted toward the door with incredible agility.
"Wait, don't run away!" The woman cried desperately as Izzy opened the door and darted out.
Izzy didn't listen, but to her horror, there were even more imperfects outside. They were sitting at metal slabs on sticks while working on some metallic device. The imperfects all turned to look at her as she slammed the door.
Her panic rising, Izzy next ran the left side of the room where there were less imperfects. She then slid under one of the metal slabs held up by rods. She brought her knees up to her chest as she scooted against the wall. She was cornered.
Izzy heard lots of murmuring and a door opening and slamming shut. She heard the woman's voice call to the other imperfects, "Where did she go?!"
"She ran under that desk!" called one of the imperfects, undoubtedly gesturing to Izzy's hiding place.
The small girl closed her eyes tightly and willed herself not to cry. She was terrified of the imperfects. She wanted Omoiyari, but who knows what they did to him.
She then let out a gasp of fright as the woman from the other room bent down in front of the desk and looked to see Izzy. The female imperfect did not look hostile now that Izzy actually saw her. She had long crooked white hair that flared up with the support of a green head band. She wore the same gray, strapped, skirtless dress as Izzy.
But what made Izzy calm down was the concern in her light brown eyes. The imperfect was not scared of the child, nor was she angry. She was instead nervous and her eyes were filled with kindness.
"It's ok, little one," the woman whispered to her reassuringly, slowly holding out her hand. "We're not going to hurt you. We only want to help."
Izzy steadied her breathing long enough to squeak in a hoarse voice, "Where is Omoiyari?"
The woman didn't seem to understand, for she looked above the desk for a moment to look at the other imperfects. Izzy heard the others murmur something before the woman ducked down again and asked uncertainly, "Who is Omoiyari?"
"He...he is my Papa..."
Some of the color from the woman's face seemed to drain away at these words. She slowly reached a hand above to on top of the desk and gently brought down something that was above. The imperfect was holding Izzy's scaly dress. It looked a lot less colorful in all the light.
"Where did you get this outfit?" The woman questioned Izzy calmly, holding out the dress to the girl.
Izzy stared at it for a second before looking up at the adult and answering with some confusion, "Omoiyari made it for me..."
"It's very well down, it's quite lovely," the woman commented with a smile before continuing, "What did he use to make it?"
"He used his old scales to make it. He used what was left to make that for me..."
The woman looked down at the dress as if marveling over it. She then moved it aside before speaking again.
"My name is Professor Burnet, but you can just call me Burnet," the woman told her kindly. "What is your name? Surely you have one."
"Iz...Izzy..."
"That's a pretty name. Well, Izzy, can you please come out? We all want to meet you and make sure you're doing ok. We can't do that while you're hiding under the desk. And I'm not sure about you but my knees hurt from kneeling on this hard floor!"
Izzy didn't move or speak. The man that had attacked Omoiyari was still out there. She may trust the woman, Burnet, but she would never trust anyone who hurt Omoiyari. Then again, if the woman's kindness was genuine, then she would protect the girl from Omoiyari's attacker.
The girl slowly moved away from the wall and over to the woman. She allowed Burnet to hold her before standing up. Izzy could see all the imperfects in the room watching them. None of them moved or did anything threatenly. But then she saw the man who attacked Omoiyari. Izzy squeaked with fright and hid behind the woman.
The man looked, well...dead. He was older than anyone else in the room. He slouched while standing and his arms hung limply at his sides. He wore black clothes except for a dark red shirt and sandals.
But what scared her was his eyes. His eyes, unlike Burnet's, were empty. No emotion nor any sign of any life lived behind them. It was like he had no will of living. Omoiyari had always told her that you can learn a lot from someone's eyes, for the imperfects said that the gateway to the soul is from the eyes.
This man had no soul.
"W-Why?" Izzy croaked before she could stop herself, looking right into the man's soulless eyes. "W-Why did you hurt Omoiyari? H-He wasn't hurting anyone! W-We were just trying to get t-to the settlement! W-We just wanted h-help!"
"Izzy-" Burnet started to say, but Izzy didn't listen.
"What did you do to Omoiyari?!" The girl screamed, causing a lot of imperfects to wince and cover their ears. "Where is my Papa?! I-I want to go home, I want P-Papa!"
The man continued to stare at the girl dully as Izzy broke into sobs. She barely felt the woman try and console her. She was so angry at the man. She hated him for treating Omoiyari just like all the other beasts did. How dare he treat him like he was below him!
"That thing, the thing with the long legs and black hair," a familiar low voice finally started, "That was your Papa, eh?"
Izzy jerked her head down as a nod. The man nodded his head as well and continued, "I didn't know that, kid. All I saw was a strange creature heading toward the settlement. I didn't have a clue what it was doing. For all I knew it was going to attack the town."
"Nanu," Burnet began, causing the man to look up. "What happened to the Ultra Beast?"
"I drove it off," the man, Nanu, said simply. "It scurried back toward the Lake of the Moone. I saw no need to pursue it further."
There was a sound of footsteps coming from the other side of the room. Another imperfect male had ran out from two closing metal doors. He was much younger than Nanu, and instead looked to be about the same age as Burnet.
"Honey, I got your call, so raced over here like a Quick Attack!" the man huffed as he approached Burnet. Izzy could only guess that he was the woman's mate.
"Oh, thank you for coming, babe," Burnet started, turning away from the soulless man to face the newcomer. "This is Izzy, she is the girl I talked to you about. We need to continue with our work here, so I was hopping you could watch her."
As the man looked down at Izzy, the young girl hid behind Burnet shyly. She liked him more than Nanu, but she still didn't feel comfortable with anyone else.
Burnet seemed to notice Izzy's shyness because she told her soothingly, "It's ok, Izzy. This is my husband, Professor Kukui. I don't think I trust anyone else more than I trust him."
With this vote of confidence, Izzy nodded quietly and edged out from behind the woman. The man smiled at her warmly, and said encouragingly, "Alola, little cousin! I guess you haven't seen a lot of people like yourself that often, have you?"
When the girl nodded, Kukui continued, "Well I don't bite, nor does everyone else here! We just want to help you!"
"I want Omoiyari," Izzy repeated stubbornly, annoyed that nobody understood that all she wanted was her Papa.
The man glanced at his wife, giving her a look that said he was confused. Izzy watched as Burnet whispered something into her mate's ear. When she moved back, Kukui looked down at her again and asked, "My wife will do everything she can to find your friend. Believe me, once she and her team start something, they get straight to the end like the move Lock On! They'll find him! Why don't you tell me about your friend for now?"
Izzy stared at the hand Kukui had just extended. Feeling a little nervous, she placed her small hand into his large one and followed him back into Burnet's office.
*~*~*
Omoiyari slowly opened one of his large yellow eyes at the smell of something putrid. He remembered running away from the imperfect after almost losing all of his power. He fled all the way back to the Lake of the Moone and hid in the castle ruins. The beast stayed in one of the crumbling rooms to restore his strength. He must had fallen asleep.
His eye moved around to see that he was still inside of the castle, but it was now dark out. Moonlight shimmered in through the cracks in the wall and the holes in the ceiling. The old flat rocks the beast was laying on was slightly wobbly from him moving his weight around. However, the only difference in the room was the clatter coming across the room.
The violet Oricorio was puttering around near the old shelves. She was holding a stone bowl while mushing something inside it with a stone. From the splatter marks on the side and the odd smell rising from it, Omoiyari could only assume that she was churning berries.
"Stay still," the bird called without turning as Omoiyari quietly set one gnarled hand on the stone floor. "You don't want to walk just yet."
"How did you know I was up?" Omoiyari asked with surprise as the Oricorio turned and strode toward him.
"I'm part Ghost Type, it's in my nature," she said simply, setting the bowl down in front of him. "There you go, eat it up. This mixture should get you feeling better in no time."
After Omoiyari sniffed the mixture and began to slowly lap at it with his long thin tongue, the Oricorio continued, "My name is Iris, I actually live here. I'm the only one who goes near this place."
"I wondered about that," Omoiyari admitted. "What is a violet Oricorio doing so far from home? Sensu Oricorios are native to Poni Island."
The Oricorio, Iris, laughed heartily at this. Once her laughter subsided, she said cheerfully, "Embarrassingly enough, I'm actually allergic to red nectar! There is something in it that makes me break out!"
"Is that even possible?"
"Oh yes, certainly. It's uncommon, but not unheard of. Oricorios can be born being allergic to at least one of the four nectars since an Oricorio must digest at least one of them to live. I can breathe it in, but I can't ingest it. Since I live so far from Poni Island, I have to make my own nectar. It's a very difficult job to do, but I manage."
She paused before continuing more quietly, "I saw what happened. I'm sorry about your trainer."
Images suddenly flashed in the beast's mind. The Z-Move, Izzy screaming before being hit by a falling piece of the bridge, the Persian chasing him off before he could reach Izzy, limping away while feeling constant fear and anger.
The beast roared suddenly out anger, making Iris flinch. The imperfect would pay for what he did! Anyone who had harmed Izzy since they're separation would be ripped to shreds! They would never know what hit them!
"I must find my daughter!" Omoiyari roared while dragging himself toward the door, knocking over the bowl and causing the berry mixture to splat to the ground. "I will kill whoever has her!"
"Sit back down before you hurt yourself!" Iris shouted threatenly. "I know enough from that battle that you're part Psychic Type since the Dark Type moves hurt you hard enough! Ghost Types' have that same advantage! As for killing the kahuna of the island, I'd like to see you try! Tapu Bulu wouldn't be very happy, would he?!"
Omoiyari surprisingly did sit down, but not for long. He closed his eyes and let his antennas scan the world around them. He just remembered a way to track imperfects that had been in the wormhole. Katie had breathed in enough of the air in the world of the Ultra Beasts to get a fair amount of radioactive energy into her system. Imperfects were like sponges, they soaked up the radiation easily. The energy was similar to aura. She would continue to expel enough of it that beasts from all over Alola could mistake her for a wormhole.
But Izzy inhaled that air for nearly eleven years. She would radiate energy powerful enough that he could track her an island away.
Sure enough, the beast's heart leapt as he sensed a similar occurrence to the wormhole on the next island. It was pulsing on the west side of the island.
"I'm going to the next island!" Omoiyari told Iris snappishly, getting up again and limping through the doors and into the great and crumbling hallway of the castle.
"Why Akala Island?!" Iris demanded while fluttering after the great beast. "Hey, you can't just leave like this!"
"My daughter is on that island! And when I find her, I'm going to kill whoever put her there!"
Omoiyari felt some satisfaction after not hearing anything else from the Oricorio. He thought he had heard the last from her until he felt something flutter on top of his head. He raised his head to see Iris perched between his antennas.
"What are you doing?" The beast hissed with frustration.
"I'm coming along to keep you from making a big mistake!" Iris answered stubbornly. "Obviously you aren't from around here, and you could get lost easily! Plus you are just asking Tapu Bulu to blow you to pieces by threatening the life of the appointed kahuna of Ula'ula Island! Besides that, you need someone to watch over you! Now, are we leaving or not?!"
The beast was too taken aback to speak. He now felt intimidated by the bird, and she was also part Ghost Type. It would be difficult for him to shake her away now that her mind was made up.
Omoiyari grumbled to himself inaudibly before slowly moving down the moldy halls of the once glorious ruins, his new fiery tempered traveling companion swaying on his head.
