35. Forever And A Day

Y/N's POV

In the next few years that passed, I had made considerable progress. Although I was still victim to the occasional nightmare, I had learnt to deal with everything I had gone through. I wouldn't go as far to say I was fully recovered, but I was pleased with my progress and I could now begin to properly enjoy life post-war. Within those years, there was a lot for me to enjoy and be happy about.

"I'm going to do it tonight." I said to Issac, showing him a small box in my right hand.

Issac laughed. "About time! We've all been waiting."

I chuckled, me and Hermione were probably the favourites to get married first but I waited. I wanted to wait until I was in a more stable position mentally before I popped the question. Harry and Ginny had gotten married first - their wedding was incredibly similar to Bill and Fleur's as it was in the big tent.

I then attended Draco's wedding as his best man when he got married to Astoria Greengrass. It was a small and private affair but nevertheless I was honoured to be Draco's best man.

So now it was time for me and Hermione, if she accepted my proposal. I had it all planned, I even asked her father for his blessing and he willingly gave it to me. I had decided that I would firstly take her out for a nice dinner at a restaurant that overlooked the ocean before going on a walk along the beach. I was praying for the skies to be clear tonight because when the sunset was beautiful I would do it. I would ask Hermione Granger to marry me.

It was cliché, but at least I wasn't proposing to her at Hogwarts or the Gryffindor Common Room.

"Are you ready?" I asked Hermione later, adjusting my shirt collar as I finished getting ready for our dinner. The ring box was in my trouser pocket, ready to go.

In the ten years that happened after the war, I tried to accustom myself more to Muggle traditions so that Hermione wouldn't feel like she was leaving her world entirely behind for the Magical world. One of the few things that I had done was learn to drive - the Muggle's preferred method of transportation.

I grabbed the car keys as Hermione made her way down the stairs of the home we had purchased together. Grimmauld Place was out of the question when we were deciding where to live together and the L/N home belonged to Issac and my mother. Hence, Hermione and I decided that we would purchase a home together.

Location wasn't an issue for us, given the fact we were all from the Magical world we could easily Apparate or use the Floo Network to get to everyone's houses.

As I drove us to the restaurant, I was feeling nervous. The moment was rapidly approaching and that was when doubtful thoughts entered my mind. What if she said no? What if she said she wasn't ready?

Dinner was excruciatingly long however it was a very nice meal. Hermione checked in on me a couple times, I think she could tell that I wasn't my usual self. I smiled and reassured her and once I paid the bill, we left for our walk.

I took in the salty ocean breeze as Hermione and I walked, hand in hand, along the beach. The sun was starting set now but I wanted to wait until we were further away from the commercial areas and more secluded.

We made small talk but I was barely paying attention due to the nervousness I was experiencing. Maybe this was a bad idea? Maybe I shouldn't do it?

I managed to talk myself out of avoiding the question and took a deep breath, it was time.

I pretended to tie my shoelaces and told Hermione to walk on as I would catch up but instead got on one knee and pulled out the ring box from my pocket.

"Y/N look-" Hermione began, turning around to talk to me but immediately freezing when she saw me.

"Hermione, you have been there for me ever since we were both just kids at Hogwarts," I started, looking her dead in the eye, "I knew even from then that you were the girl I wanted to end up with. No one else. It has always been you. Even through all the tough times I have never once stopped loving you once I started. You saved me Hermione."

I paused, smiling at her as tears welled up in her eyes.

"So, Hermione Jean Granger, will you marry me?"

She replied immediately. "Yes! Yes I will marry you!"

I broke out into the largest smile and immediately went over to hug and kiss her. I then proceeded to put the ring I purchased on.

"It's beautiful Y/N." Hermione smiled, giving me a kiss on my cheek.

I smiled to myself. We had kept the promise we made all those years ago. She waited for me and I remained good for her.

The wedding preparations were quick, when we broke the news to everyone no one was surprised. There was a moment of awkwardness between me and Ron but it disappeared quickly, he had been seeing another girl recently.

I had made Issac my best man, it was an easy decision. The difficult decision was who my groomsmen were going to be. I knew one of them would be Harry and one of them would be Draco but I wasn't sure on who I wanted my third groomsmen to be. I was torn between Nick and Ron and wasn't sure if Ron would be an appropriate choice. We had inevitably drifted after the war and definitely weren't as close as before so perhaps it wasn't the best choice. Plus, out of the two of them who both had feelings for my wife-to-be at some point, Nick was the least childish about it.

So it was settled, Nick was going to be one of the groomsmen. When I delivered the news to everyone else they were mildly shocked but not surprised. Mr and Mrs Weasley had heavily scolded their youngest son for his actions towards me and it didn't change how they felt about me. Ron was obviously disappointed, but he accepted that his actions had consequences.

I wasn't cruel though and invited him to my bachelor party which involved a lot of drinking, a lot of drunk karaoke and a very drunk Nick passed out on the floor. I heard from Ginny that Hermione's bachelorette party the antics were very similar.

It was an enjoyable evening and I treasured the time I spent with those around me. I was thankful for everyone in my life. The party ended in the early hours of the morning after we were kicked out our final pub for disturbance. We ended up grabbing some food from nearby before we all made our way home.

After the bachelor party, the wedding preparations became even more intense. It was the final stretch so everything had to be finalised, checked and confirmed. Hermione had been more stressed than ever, making sure that everything was in place - but I wasn't surprised. That was the Hermione I fell in love with.

When the day finally came, I was filled with a bundle of nerves and excitement. After all these years of waiting, Hermione Granger was soon to be my wife.

"Excited?" Issac asked me as I finished getting ready in a room upstairs.

I nodded. "And nervous."

Issac chuckled. "The great Y/N L/N nervous? That's unheard of."

I gave my brother a light punch on the shoulder before finishing my outfit for the wedding. As I looked at myself in the mirror, I was filled with a small sense of pride. It was nice seeing the progress I had made, I was no longer the broken, unfixable boy I was. Instead, I was now living my happiest life, about to get married to the woman of my dreams. It would be a lie to say my life wasn't filled with the occasional mishap - however, for now, all was well.

The guest list for Hermione and I's wedding comprised of many people. Many of the Professors of Hogwarts were there, especially McGonagall. Members of Dumbledore's Army were there, the Weasley's were there, my mother, members of the Order and friends we had made along the way. It was a joyous day and I wanted everyone to celebrate it with me.

Draco and Madison were also there, Draco was obviously one of my groomsmen and Madison came with Nick. She had been doing better now, it was obviously a difficult adjustment but she tried and the results showed. I was right, she was never inherently evil, she was just brought up in an environment where that was all she knew.

"Ready to go?" Issac asked.

I looked at myself one last time in the mirror, my H/C was at neat as it could be, my wedding outfit fitted me perfectly and plastered on my face was a large smile. I was indeed ready.

I nodded to Issac who opened the door for me and we began making our way downstairs. When we got to the main room where everybody was, I saw that all our family, friends, Professors and more were seated and the wedding officiant was at the front. There were a few empty seats at our wedding, but that was intentional. We had left seats for all our fallen friends. Sirius and Marissa had seats, my father had a seat, Lupin and Tonks had seats, Axel had a seat and many more.

At the top of the aisle, my mother waited for me. Issac said goodbye before quickly making his way to where the other groomsmen and bridesmaids were.

"You look so handsome," my mother commented, beaming with pride as tears welled up in her eyes, "your father would be so proud of you."

"I hope he is." I replied, glancing up momentarily hoping my father was watching over me.

I had asked that my mother walked with me to the altar at the front, she obviously accepted.

There was an orchestra in the background playing a specific song I had asked for when I made my way to the front. They were given requests for different moments and I was most excited to hear what song Hermione would be walking down the altar to. My entrance was not extravagant as I would be the first one up there but I thought it would still be nice to enter with my mother and with music playing.

When I made my way to the front, I gave my mother a quick kiss on the cheek and a hug before she made her way to her seat and I stood in my designated spot.

Next, the groomsmen and bridesmaids made their way to the front. Ginny, Luna, Parvarti and Faye made their way to one side with Ginny nearer to the middle as Hermione's maid of honour whilst Harry, Draco, Nick and Issac made their way to the side I was on with Issac closest to me. Afterwards, little Teddy Lupin made his way down as our ring bearer and Bill and Fleur's daughter, Victoire made her way down too as the flower girl.

Excitement and nerves filled me as we got closer and closer to Hermione walking down the aisle. The moment finally arrived and there she was, the most beautiful girl in the world. I felt like I was meeting her for the very first time again and falling in love with her all over again. She looked perfect in her wedding dress, it fitted her perfectly and she was holding a bouquet of flowers with her father next to her. As she made her way down, it felt like it was only me and her, I couldn't pay attention to anyone else. The orchestra started playing a classical instrument-only rendition of Wildest Dreams and it was perfect. She had picked the perfect song.

I had the biggest grin on my face as she made her way down and when she finally arrived at the front, my eyes were only on her.

The officiant began their opening remarks, going on about how we were destined for each other, how we were soulmates and true loves but I was barely paying attention, I was too busy admiring Hermione.

Then came our vows, I went first. I took a deep breath before speaking.

"Hermione, I remember when I first met you when we were little kids at Hogwarts and I remember how I instantly thought you were really cute and really smart. I didn't realise I properly liked you until our second year, then I knew I loved you in our fourth year, and since then, the rest is history and I've never stopped loving you. We have gone through hell and back and look at us, we're still here. I know it hasn't been easy but I am so thankful I had the chance to meet you. I will love you for forever and a day, until death do us part - and even death hasn't even been able to separate us...twice-"

I paused as the guests let out a laugh.

"-I love you so much Hermione Granger, you are what saved me, you are everything that's good about me and you are the best thing that has ever happened to me. I can't wait to spend the rest of my life with you."

I looked at Hermione as tears were in her eyes, she then composed herself before speaking.

"How do I start. Y/N, I could say the same about everything for you. Even in our first year when everyone else made fun of me you were kind and you were there for me. From then on, I was infatuated with you. You were smart, you were talented, you were everything that I would ever want in someone. I have never felt such strong emotions for you, the love, the pain, the utter heartbreak and that's how I know what we have is real and strong. I want to spend the rest of my life with you, because only you understand how my mind works and you truly get me. I love you so much Y/N L/N."

I felt emotional as those words escaped her mouth and looked at her with nothing but love and adoration in my eyes. As the officiant proceeded with the wedding, we were handed the rings and placed them on each other.

Finally, the officiant spoke the words I had been dying to here for so long.

"I now pronounce you husband and wife. You may kiss the bride"

I wrapped Hermione around her waist with my arms before kissing her passionately, the crowd cheering and applauding in front of us.

Hermione Jean Granger, the girl whom I had loved for all these years, was finally my wife.
