28. The Battle Begins

Y/N's POV

I wasn't entirely sure how much time had passed but me and Hermione laid next to each other, simply enjoying the company - it may have been the last time we ever were so intimate with each other. I had never felt as happy as I did now, however, I knew it wouldn't last. It was all going to go down, Voldemort knew that Harry had started hunting down his Horcruxes. The final battle was incoming.

Hermione and I were interrupted by the commotion outside the room. I quickly scrambled up and put on my discarded garments before checking what was going on.

"It's Snape!" one of the members yelled. "He's called for all students to go to the Great Hall."

Neville looked worried. "Do you think they've got Harry?"

At the possibility of Harry being captured, Hermione quickly organised herself and soon the two of us were joining the others - hurriedly making our way to the Great Hall.

As we made our way into the Great Hall, we had to be seperated into houses. I gave Hermione a quick kiss before disappearing, trying to find the Slytherins. I looked around for Draco and when I found him, he backed away from me.

"Don't come near me." Draco snarled.

I looked at him desperately. "Draco-"

He spoke to me in a deadly whisper. "You killed my father."

I had almost no regrets for what I did that night at the Malfoy Manor, my only regret was the impact it had on someone I had come to care for like a brother.

"I'm sorry, Draco." I said, looking at the boy.

He looked at me, with eyes that were almost fearful of me, before he turned away and joined the rest of his companions.

I entered the Great Hall alone, at the back of everyone else. No one was sat, each house was segregated and there was silence as Snape spoke.

"Many of you are surely wondering why I have summoned you here at this house. It has come tomy attention that earlier this evening, Harry Potter was sighted in Hogsmeade."

Murmurs filled the hall but Snape raised his own voice to silence the students.

"For myself and a few select members of the staff, this comes as little surprise. We have, for some time, considered Mr Potter's return to Hogwarts to be not only possible but inevitable. Should anyone - student or staff - attempt to aid Mr Potter, that person will be punished. Rest assured: so long as I am Headmaster at Hogwarts, Harry Potter will never again step foot in this castle."

Cheers erupted from the Slytherins in front of me but I stayed silent. I could feel something moving in the shadows behind me as Snape continued to speak.

"Now then. If anyone here has knowledge of Mr Potter's movements this evening...I invite them to step forward now."

The figure behind me moved forward, I didn't have to turn to know who it was.

"It would seem that, despite your exhaustive defensive strategies, you have a bit of a security problem, Headmaster."

I finally turned around and Harry was accompanied by familiar individuals: Hermione, Ron, Arthur, Molly, Fred, George, Issac, Percy, Luna, Bill, Fluer, Kingsley.

"And I'm afraid it's rather extensive."

Who knew Harry Potter could be an absolute badass? The group looked at me, almost waiting to see if I would join them. I wanted to yet I remained glued to the spot I was.

"How dare you stand where he stood. Tell them how it was that night. Tell them how you looked him in the eye, a man who trusted you...and killed him. Tell them!"

I watched as both Snape and Harry looked at each other. If only Harry knew...

Snape then made a movement as if he was reaching for his wand but Professor McGonagall beat him to it. With a wave of her wand, she sent a blast in Snape's direction. With a pivot, he parried the spell and sent it ricocheting around the room.

This is when the chaos began. Inspired by McGonagall the rest of the staff began to attack Snape as well as the Carrow twins. Within minutes, Snape swept his wand over the room and sent the Great Hall into total darkness. Before anyone could realise, a great whooshing filled the room and blasted through the window - glass shattering and going everywhere.

"Coward! COWARD!" McGonagall screamed.

Just before any more commotion could happen, an eerie voice filled the Great Hall. A voice I was all too familiar with. As the voice echoed around the room, there was silence, there was fear.

"I know you are preparing to fight. Your efforts are futile. You cannot fight me. I do not want to kill you. I have great respect for the teachers of Hogwarts. I do not want to spill magical blood. Give me Harry Potter, and none shall be harmed. Give me Harry Potter, and I shall leave the school untouched. Give me Harry Potter, and you will be rewarded. You have until midnight."

Whispers filled the hall and I was filled with dread. This was it, this was the final battle. I had no idea what I was meant to do, it had only come back to me recently that I had to die. I hadn't told anyone but I knew I had to tell Harry. He of all people deserved to know, perhaps Hermione too but I didn't want to give her another thing to worry about.

"But he's there! Potter's there! Someone grab him!" Pansy shrieked before several Slytherins elbowed me into his direction.

"Get him F/N." Blaise Zabini said menacingly, the Slytherins expecting me to do something. I looked at Harry and he looked at me inquisitively, what was I going to do? I drew my wand tentatively and stood facing Harry.

Instinctively, Ginny stepped in front of Harry and then one by one people began to assemble in a line to shield Harry. Members of the DA looked at me, Neville looked betrayed. How was I meant to get out of this? How was I meant to be the good guy?

"Students out of bed! Students in the corridors!" Filch yelled, bursting into the hall.

"They're supposed to be out of bed you blithering idiot!" McGonagall replied harshly.

Filch looked embarassed as McGonagall continued.

"Wait, as it turns out Mr Filch, your arrival is more opportune. If you would, I'd like you to lead Miss Parkinson, Mr Malfoy and the rest of Slytherin from the hall."

"Where exactly is it I'd be leading them to?"

McGonagall looked thoughtful for a second. "The dungeons should do."

Cheers rose as the rest of Slytherin and I were escorted from the hall. I turned back to look at Hermione for what may have been the last time. As Filch escorted us toward the dungeons, I snuck away and made my way into my dormitory to retrieve an item. On my bedside table was the item Dumbledore had left me in his will, I grabbed the Snitch and placed it into my pocket. When I left, I stealthily slipped away into the shadows and made my way to an unoccupied corridor.

Fuck. Why was this so hard? As the final battle approached I found myself at crossroads. I knew I had to do good, for Hermione, for everyone else but it felt so difficult. My mind had fallen into such a dark place, a place I thought I could never recover from. Perhaps I was destined to be evil, perhaps my death was my punishment for all the sins I had committed. Maybe there was no point in being good if everyone already saw me as evil.

My thoughts were interrupted by the noises of the castle protecting itself from the incoming Dark Lord. The noises were then accompanied by Harry appearing around the corner and running towards me.

"Harry I need to speak to you!" I shouted.

He looked at me and came to a halt. "How can I trust you? What have you done to show your trust?"

"I didn't hurt you in the Great Hall did I?"

"No, but you drew your wand."

I sighed. "I don't have time to argue with you Harry, there's something important you need to know."

"Hurry up, I have to go find something." Harry said, looking at me.

I took a deep breath. "I have a prophecy, like yours."

Harry looked at me curiously.

"It basically says that as long as I'm alive, you can't kill Voldemort."

Harry looked at me, shocked, his face pale. "You're a Horcrux?"

I shook my head. "I don't think so. It's more that I'm his only living heir and we share the same bloodline, so I guess unless his bloodline has been eradicated, he can't die."

"I don't want to kill you." Harry said, his voice shaking slightly.

I slumped down, my back pressed against the cold wall of the castle. "You'll have to."

"There's got to be a way. Something we can do." Harry said, sitting next to me.

I let out a dry chuckle. "I could always make a Horcrux."

It wouldn't logically work but it was just something to lighten the mood.

Harry's eyes lit up. "That's it!"

"Harry mate, I'm not actually going to make a Horcrux."

He shook his head. "Not that, there was something I remember Hermione going on about ages ago. Some advanced spell where someone can die but their soul is preserved."

"But surely I would just exist in this weird purgatory between actual life and the afterlife?" I said, skeptical of what Harry was suggesting.

"But I think you can restore your soul to your body. So physically you're dead but then you can sort of be resuscitated again."

"This sounds incredibly complicated Harry."

Harry nodded. "I'm not entirely sure how it works, you'll have to try find a book about it. Would that work? Would it be a loophole?"

I shrugged. "In theory it should work, the execution would be the hardest thing though."

"You don't sound too convinced." Harry stated, looking at me.

I sighed. "I just think me dying would be the best. I'm not scared of death anymore. I just think it would be for the best."

"That's bollocks and you know it Y/N." Harry replied. "We all need you, look at how much you've done for us. We wouldn't even be alive if it wasn't for you."

"But you don't get it Harry, I've done some awful things. Things I don't know if I can live with."

Harry's voice softened. "You got to try. Please. For me? For Hermione? For Ron?"

I laughed. "Ron can't stand me anymore."

"He'll come around, it's just him being a git." Harry said with a small smile. "The point is, we all need you here. There's still some good inside of you. Hold onto it."

Harry's words made me feel slightly better but not enough to make me feel like I was a saint. I felt as though I had let everyone down.

"I'll look into it," I told Harry before adding, "don't tell anyone else about this please Harry. Especially not Hermione.

He nodded before getting up and continuing his quest to find the rest of Voldemort's Horcruxes. Once he had left, I began making my way to the library, trying my hardest to avoid everyone. I just wanted to be alone right now.

"Where do you think you're going?" a voice said from behind me.

Why couldn't I just be alone right now? I turned and saw Issac stood there. "I thought I saw you from the corner of my eye little brother."

I gave him a small smile. "I would love to have a reunion right now Issac but I'm trying to sort something out."

"What is it? I'll come give you a hand." Issac asked.

"I need to go to the library."

"Now doesn't seem to be the best time to be catching up on some schoolwork."

I looked at my brother with nothing in my eyes before speaking bluntly, I was going to tell him the truth. He was my brother, I didn't want to lie to him.

"I'm going to die."
