16. Exiled And Returned

Y/N's POV

As we woke up and a new day began, we were faced with even more problems. I already had the preoccupying issue of how I was going to go back to Hogwarts and what my cover story would be. I was sure that whatever it was, Voldemort would probably believe it. He knew I was slowly turning dark and I knew he was trying to manipulate it by making me commit sinful deeds such as the murder of the Sawyer family and my father.

Hermione, Harry and I felt that it was best not to stay anywhere too long and Ron agreed - with the sole provision that their next move took them within reach of a bacon sandwich. Hermione and I, therefore, removed the enchantments we had placed around the clearing while Harry and Ron obliterated all the marks and impressions on the ground that might show we had camped here. Then we Disapparated to the outskirts of a small market town. Once we had pitched the tent in the shelter of a small copse of trees and surrounded it with freshly cast defensive enchantments. Harry and I ventured out under the Invisibility Cloak to find sustenance.

This, however, did not go as planned. We had barely entered the town when an unnatural chill, a descending mist, and a sudden darkening of the skies made Harry freeze where he stood. We decided that it was probably for the best if we returned back to Hermione and Ron.

"But you can make a brilliant Patronus!" protested Ron, when we arrived back at the tent empty handed with Harry out of breath, and mouthing the single word, Dementors.

"I couldn't...make one." he panted, clutching the stitch in his side."Wouldn't...come."

I could tell that their expressions of disappointment made Harry feel ashamed. It had been a nightmarish experience for him, seeing the Dementors gliding out of the mist in the distance.

"So we still haven't got any food." Ron said angrily.

"Shut up, Ron," snapped Hermione, "Harry, what happened? Why do you think you couldn't make your Patronus? You managed perfectly yesterday!"

"I don't know."

Ron kicked a chair leg. I glared at him.

"What?" he snarled. "I'm starving!"

"Maybe if you stopped being such a greedy pig and thought about things other than stuffing your face, you wouldn't be like this!" I retorted, anger consuming me easier than usual. Normally, I was able to control my anger better than this and be able to hide it but right now, I couldn't.

"You've got some nerve," Ron said angrily, "you show up every once in a while saying that you're trying to help us but then disappear days after to be You-Know-Who's bitch again!"

I roared. "WELL IF YOU COULDN'T TELL. I'M STILL HERE AREN'T I?"

Ron looked at me, the hunger causing him to be angry and easily irritated. "You're not doing much are you. Pathetic excuse of a wizard you are. I don't know why Dumbledore wanted you, he could've used anyone. But he chose you."

I knew he didn't mean it, and it was just his empty stomach talking but I couldn't see past it.

I charged forward but hit a Shield Charm that Hermione had cast.

"The locket!" Hermione exclaimed. "Of course!"

I looked at her, still angry. "What do you mean?"

"Take it off." she commanded and I did so and handed it to her.

Immediately, a wave of relief washed over me and I felt the anger slightly subsiding.

"Better?" Hermione asked.

I nodded. "Thanks."

I looked at Ron and was about to apologise but he wasn't having any of it.

"Did you see that!" he snarled. "He was going to attack me! He's a threat Hermione, can't you see that? I told you he's one of them now."

I grimaced as I listened to Ron, I knew deep down that he was right. I was probably a threat to them and putting them at risk by just being near them.

"You're right." I said quietly. "I'm sorry."

And with that I ran out the tent, ignoring Hermione's pleas and Disapparated away, back to Malfoy Manor.

I ignored the sadness in my chest as I walked down the dimly lit path of the Manor where Voldemort was most likely to be. As I entered, I saw Narcissa who was surprised to see me.

"Y/N." she said quickly. "What brings you here?"

"Is the Dark Lord here?" I asked her quickly.

She shook her head. "But he will be back soon."

I could hear the terror in her voice as she mentioned Voldemort. I nodded and made my way upstairs to where my room was. As I opened the door, I noticed Madison, standing by the mirror, inspecting the bruises on her face.

"Y/N..." she said quickly, brushing her hair out of her face.

"What happened." I asked her.

"The Dark Lord was disappointed by me. I let him down."

That moment of vulnerability from the girl had suddenly disappeared and her old persona had resurfaced.

"I missed you..." she said seductively coming towards me but I pushed her away.

"Excuse me," I replied, "I need to go speak to him."

As I walked down, Voldemort had returned and I could see both Thadicus and Caroline by him.

"Y/N, my boy, Severus told me that you wished to leave the school. For what reason?" he asked me in Parseltongue.

"For my own reasons grandfather, you have your business to attend to and I have mine."

Voldemort nodded. "What is it that you need?"

"What happened to Madison?"

He let out a dry laugh. "She wished to prove her worth to me, she failed. She is nothing but a useless dead weight."

"Don't speak like that about her," I said angrily, "you don't touch her again grandfather."

Voldemort dismissed me with a wave of the arm. "Thadicus, tell Severus to allow Y/N to Apparate back to Hogwarts."

Thadicus nodded and rushed off to complete his task.

I made my way back upstairs to where Madison would be, although I cared for Hermione deeply, part of me could relate and connect with Madison. I knew we weren't meant to be and I knew that my heart would always belong to Hermione, but for now, as bad as it seemed, she was a distraction from all the heartache that I associated with Hermione.

After spending time with Madison, Thadicus came to inform me that I would be able to Apparate onto Hogwarts now, so after saying goodbye to Madison, I Apparated.

My eyes met Snape and we shared a mutual look. I had no opinion of him, although I did question his loyalty from time to time. Dumbledore believed him to be on the good side but at times, I questioned where his true loyalties were.

"Mr Malfoy, your brother is waiting for you in your Common Room."

I nodded and walked off, making my way to the dungeon where the Slytherin Common Room was. As I entered, dressed in the all-black suit I had purchased last year with Draco, I saw Draco and Blaise sitting in an all-green armchair.

"You're back F/N." Blaise commented dully.

I nodded. "Anything interesting happen?"

Draco shrugged. "Gryffindor kids were causing trouble again. Well mostly Gryffindor, it's the DA."

I triumphantly smiled to myself, Harry and I had taught them well. They wouldn't let themselves be bossed around by the likes of Snape.

"What'd on your mind?" Blaise asked me as I sat down, unbuttoning my jacket and crossing my legs.

"Did you go see...the Dark Lord?" Draco asked me.

I nodded. "I had to do something for him, he needed me to go find some people."

Draco looked almost jealous that Voldemort prized me more than him.

"You're lucky F/N," Blaise commented, "when this is all over and the Dark Lord triumphs, you'll have it all. You'll be the heir to his throne."

The idea of Voldemort ruling the entire Wizarding World made me feel uneasy, I tried to imagine it and it wasn't a safe place, especially for Hermione. I knew that if Voldemort won, Harry would be dead and I couldn't imagine a world without him.

It would be so empty and it would be a cold and lifeless world without one of my best friends and the first friend I had ever made at Hogwarts. Everyone was relying on him and everyone needed him to help take down the Dark Lord once and for all.

As well as Harry and his prophecy I was still trying to figure out what prophecy I had. I knew I had something, but I just didn't know what it entailed.

By my bedside at Hogwarts there was also the Snitch that Dumbledore had left me, I was trying to figure out the mystery behind than and figure out why he left it and what significance it had. Because it was Dumbledore, I knew there was a greater meaning.

For now, I would have to bide my time and wait for everything to happen. I felt quite powerless at Hogwarts and perhaps that was the way Voldemort wanted it. Perhaps he still doubted me although that was very unlikely.

Whilst at Hogwarts, I would have to try and solve all these mysteries and try and uncover what was really underneath everything.

Because in this world, nothing is as it seems.
