13. Mischief At The Ministry
Y/N's POV
I had faced the challenge of packing everything that I could possibly need to help Hermione and the others out with their task at the Ministry. I had tied up all loose ends and came up with a false alibi as to why I would be leaving Hogwarts for a bit.
"When will you return?" Draco questioned me as I slung my backpack over my shoulder.
I shrugged. "Soon."
I waved goodbye to Draco and met up with both the Carrow siblings, giving them a respectful nod as I made my way to the border of the school before Apparating away.
Instantly, I arrived at the front of Grimmauld Place and knocked on the door, waiting to be greeted. Hermione greeted me and threw herself forward and hugged me before inviting me in. All the jinxes set in place for Snape all passed through me and I was free to walk around the house.
"So what's the plan?" I asked curiously, sat at the kitchen table.
"We're going tomorrow," Hermione told me, "apparently we know enough to infiltrate the Ministry."
Their plan certainly was ambitious but I didn't comment.
"You're not going though." Ron said protectively.
Hermione's eyes widened. "Why not?"
Ron jabbed his finger to an outdated Daily Prophet. "You're on the list of Muggle-borns they want to interrogate!"
"And you're supposed to be at home, dying of spattergroit." I countered, this was Ron's excuse to not be showing up to Hogwarts.
"Not to mention I've got a bounty on my head," Harry said dryly, "well isn't this amazing?"
It took Hermione a mere half-hour to conjure up a fully-functioning plan that would allow the four of us to infiltrate the Ministry.
"Why are we going anyways?" I asked, they hadn't let me into why they wanted to break into the Ministry which was completely dominated by Voldemort's reign.
"For the locket," Harry said quickly, "Kreacher found Mundungus who said that he sold it to Umbridge-"
"-oh that bitch." I growled. Her treatment of us and other students made me very partial to the idea of killing her.
I looked around at Hermione, Harry and Ron. Two of them had determined faces whilst one looked down at the ground, refusing to make eye contact with me.
"Can't I just go get it for you?" I suggested.
"And what? Take it for yourself?" Ron shot back.
I sighed, I wasn't going to have this argument with Ron again. Instead, I was going to leave him be and avoid confrontation.
The next morning, we were all prepared and I had woken up at the crack of dawn before everyone just to witness the sunrise outside.
It was so pure, so calming. It was everything that was the opposite of me. I craned my neck to watch the end of the sunrise, sighing contently to myself.
In fleeting moments like this, this was where I found little moments of geniune joy.
"Are you ok?" Hermione appeared, standing next to me with a cup of tea in hand.
I nodded.
There was silence between us but how I longed to pull her towards me and kiss her. But that would be too disrespectful towards Nick, and I had surprisingly found a friend in him and I really didn't want to lose our friendship.
The moment arrived when all four of us arrived in London, everything happened in super-speed. Hermione executed everything perfectly, and before we knew it we had four Ministry workers right in front of us, stunned.
"Well shit," I said, "you work quick."
Hermione blushed slightly before turning to Harry and Ron.
"Let's get the hairs and get ready."
Once the uncomfortable transformation was complete, I admired my new identity, he had dark hair and dark eyes and was around six feet tall with a nice, muscular build.
"Let's go." I said to the others, making our way to where there were toilets. There, we split up with Hermione and made our ways into the toilets.
We each stepped into a grimy black and white cubicle, I just managed to catch a glimpse of someone flushing themselves and quickly informed both Harry and Ron.
I took a deep sigh and stepped into the toilet, surprisingly my trousers not getting wet. I closed my eyes and pulled the handle to flush the toilet and soon appeared in the Atrium of the Ministry of Magic.
Ministry workers were toppling out of fireplaces below us. Engraved in foot-highletters at the base of the statue were the words MAGIC IS MIGHT.
"Psst!" said a voice, and I looked around to see a wispy little witch, a tall wizard and the ferrety wizard from Magical Maintenance gesturing to me from over beside the statue.
"It's horrible, isn't it?" Hermione muttered, who was staring up at the statue. "Have you seen what they're sitting on?"
I looked closely and realised that there were humans, there were hundreds of naked bodies, men, women and children. They all sported ugly, stupid, twisted faces and were pressued together to support the weight of the handsomely robed wizards above them.
"Muggles," I whispered, "in what the Dark Lord thinks is their rightful place."
All of us started making our way and joined the stream of witches and wizards moving towards the end of the hall. I knew that we were looking for Dolores Umbridge but there was no sign of her.
"I requested someone from Magical Maintenence to sort out my office Cattermole," said a Death Eater I recognised as Yaxley, "it's still raining in there."
I looked at Ron who showed obvious nervousness. "Raining...in your office? That's not good is it?"
Ron chuckled nervously.
"You think that's funny?" Yaxley questioned.
"No," said Ron, "no, of course-" "
"-you realise that I am on my way downstairs to interrogate your wife, Cattermole? In fact, I'm quite surprised you're not down there holding her hand while she waits. Already given her up as a bad job, have you? Probably wise. Be sure and marry a Pure-blood next time."
"I-I-" stammered Ron.
"But if my wife were accused of being a Mudblood," said Yaxley, "not that any woman I married would ever be mistaken for such filth and the Head of Department of Magical Law Enforcement needed a job doing, I would make it my priority to do this job, Cattermole. Do you understand me?"
"Yes." whispered Ron.
"Then attend to it, Cattermole, and if my office is not completely dry within an hour, your wife's Blood Status will be in even greater doubt than it is now."
Once Yaxley disappeared, Hermione started giving pointers to Ron on how to fix Yaxley's office. We all made our way to the elevator and Ron shortly departed, we gave him a reassuring smile before he walked off. The three of us continued in the elevator before someone joined us:
The toad-faced bitch, Dolores Umbridge.
"Mafalda! Silas!" Umbridge said, looking at us. "Travers sent you?"
Me and Hermione both looked at ourselves and nodded. I was in the body of Ministry worker, Silas Banks.
"Well Runcorn," Umbridge said, looking at Harry, "aren't you going to get out?"
"Uh...oh yeah." Harry said gruffly before walking out, leaving Hermione and I in an elevator with Umbridge.
The three of us continued going down the elevator, the silence filling the room. When we arrived, we stepped out the elevator and walked into the Courtroom with both Hermione and Umbridge by my side. I glanced towards her and noticed that she was indeed wearing the locket that Harry and the others desired greatly.
One of Voldemort's Horcruxes.
As we walked into the room, a feeling of coldness and emptiness entered me and as I glanced upwards, I noticed the cause of this: Dementors.
A sickly feeling coursed past me and but I managed to supress it and keep a straight, neutral expression.
Both Hermione and I sat down next to Umbridge as she sat smugly, staring forward.
"Who's first." Umbridge boomed, looking forward to the entrance of the door.
The doors burst open and in came a man, screaming and yelling as there was a frightened man trying to free himself from the grip of Ministry workers.
"No, no, I'm Half-blood, I'm Half-blood, I tell you! My father was a wizard, he was, look him up, Arkie Alderton, he's a well-known broomstick designer, look him up, I tell you, get your hands off me, get your hands off-"
"-this is your final warning!" Umbridge said softly, the magic in the room echoing her voice. "If you struggle, you will be subjected to the Dementor's Kiss."
The man's screams subsided, but dry sobs echoed through the corridor.
"Take him away," said Umbridge.
Two Dementors appeared in the doorway of the courtroom, their rotting, scabbed hands clutching the upper arms of a wizard who appeared to be fainting. They glided away down the corridor with him, and the darkness they trailed behind them swallowed him from sight.
Me and Hermione glanced at each other worriedly, this was not pleasant at all. I felt a sick feeling in my stomach as Umbridge looked down at everyone who wasn't proven to have a wizard parentage and subjected them to cruel punishments.
I felt a strong urge and desire to kill her at this exact moment and kill everyone who dared to challenge me. This dark part of me was coming out to play and I was trying my best to suppress the part of myself, suppress the darkness within me.
At the same time, part of me wanted to unleash this monster within me. Perhaps I could be known as the perpetrator behind the 'Massacre at the Ministry'. However, I knew it would be extremely dangerous and it could ruin Hermione's whole plan as well as reveal my true loyalties.
In the end, I decided to remain as civil and professional as possible for the sake of the others. The Dementors from above were still making me feel cold inside but I tried to block them out of my mind, if I didn't acknowledge them, surely they wouldn't be able to hurt me.
Finally, one name that sounded familiar to me was uttered from Umbridge's mouth.
"Next: Tabitha Wayne."
