Chapter Thirty Two
The following morning, the entire Gryffindor Quidditch Team strutted into the Great Hall. Harry carried his Firebolt, causing mouths to drop from every table. With a quick glance at the Slytherin table, Carina noticed that the entire Slytherin Quidditch Team watched them with a mixture of disbelief and hatred.
"Put it here, Harry," Oliver instructed, motioning towards the center of the table, and taking the broom from him. He gingerly placed it in the center of the table, causing people from every house to crowd around them.
"Sure you can manage that broom, Potter?" came Draco's voice from behind, Crabbe and Goyle by his sides. Carina felt her body tense in annoyance, but somehow found herself locking her emotions away as Snape had instructed. Harry can handle this, she thought, just calm down. She felt Oliver's hand around hers in an instant, as if he were trying to restrain her.
"Yeah, reckon so," Harry replied lazily, stacking toast onto his plate.
"Got plenty of features hasn't it? Shame it doesn't come with a parachute - in case you get too near a Dementor," Draco sneered, earning giggles from his chubby sidekicks. Carina's fists clenched, but she bit her tongue and bowed her head. Harry has got this under control... it's fine... let it be... Draco's just showing off... it's fine, Carina reminded herself.
"Pity you can't attach an extra arm to yours, Malfoy. Then it could catch the Snitch for you," Harry remarked. A grin immediately spread across Carina's face and the Gryffindor team erupted in laughter. Draco's eyes narrowed, before him and his dimwits stalked back to their own table.
Later that day, Carina sat in the locker rooms with Oliver giving his typical prematch speech. She sat between Angelina and Alicia, listening more to the thundering crowd outside than to what her captain had to say. Before she had realized Oliver's speech was over, he was strutting outside with the team on his tail. It was a clear day with absolutely no visibility issues, and cool enough so that they wouldn't overheat. The Ravenclaw team stood in the middle of the field already, watching the Gryffindors expectantly.
"Wood, Davies, shake hands," Madam Hooch directed. Both captains did as they were told, "Mount your brooms... on my whistle... three - two - one!" Carina kicked off the ground and Carina immediately grabbed for the Quaffle. She caught it with ease and sailed towards the Ravenclaw goalposts, passing to Angelina in the process.
"They're off, and the big excitement this match is the Firebolt that Harry Potter is flying for Gryffindor. According to Which Broomstick, the Firebolt's going to be the broom of choice for the national teams at this year's World Championship -" Lee began, but was interrupted by Professor McGonagall.
"Jordan, would you mind telling us what's going on int he match?"
"Right you are, Professor - just giving a bit of background information - the Firebolt, incidentally, has a built-in auto-brake and -"
"Jordan!"
"Okay, okay, Gryffindor in possession, Alicia Spinnet in Gryffindor speeding for goal..." Lee commented. She scored with ease, and the Gryffindor side of the pitch thundered in applause.
"GRYFFINDOR SCORES! Ravenclaw Keeper, Page, passes to Chaser Stretton." Carina zoomed after Jeremy Stretton, attempting to knock the Quaffle out of his hands. She was nearly successful in doing so, before a Bludger came inches away from her head, causing her to veer off course. Instead of hitting her, however, it rammed into Stretton's side, knocking the Quaffle out of his arms. Carina snatched it up and raced towards the other side of the pitch. With a pass to Alicia and a pass back, Carina aimed at the left hoop, and the Keeper missed, earning ten points for Gryffindor. Page tossed it to Davies, but Angelina intercepted the pass and scored again for Gryffindor.
"GRYFFINDOR SCORES TWICE! Amazing players those Gryffindor girls are," Lee said. Meanwhile, a Ravenclaw Chaser had finally gotten possession of the Quaffle and was sneaking towards the opposite end of the pitch. Carina raced after him, but was too late as he aimed and Oliver missed.
"I spoke to soon... RAVENCLAW SCORES!" With a sigh, Carina caught the Quaffle again, only to be surrounded by two Ravenclaw Chasers, each pushing into her shoulders. A bludger hit by George practically knocked Davies off of his broom, and Carina managed to outfly the other. With a swift pass to Angelina, Gryffindor scored again. By the time the score had reached eighty to thirty with Gryffindor in the lead, Carina began to wonder what Harry was doing, as there was no sign of him catching the Snitch. She caught him speeding towards the Snitch in the corner of her eye, only to be violently cut off by Cho Chang.
"HARRY, THIS IS NOT A TIME TO BE A GENTLEMAN! KNOCK HER OFF HER BROOM IF YOU HAVE TO!" Oliver roared while watching Harry swerve around her. Harry seemed to get the message then as he began darting through the air sporadically. Carina resumed her own position, only to see Stretton in possession of the Quaffle. She chased after him with all of her speed, but was soon distracted again by an enormous, silvery cloud galloping below her.
"What the-" Carina began, but was cut off by Lee Jordan's booming voice.
"HARRY POTTER CATCHES THE GOLDEN SNITCH! GRYFFINDOR WINS!" he shrieked. Pure joy flooded through Carina's veins as she sailed towards Harry and engulfed him into a midair hug, kissing him on the cheek repeatedly. The rest of the team joined after her, until they were a mass of scarlet with a crowd cheering below them.
"That's my boy!" Oliver shouted repeatedly as if he might cry. Both twins pulled Harry into a bone-crushing hug, while Angelina and Alicia kissed him as well. They descended towards the ground, and were immediately pulled into a crowd of Gryffindors, all of which were cheering in delight. There was so much enthusiasm that Carina had to remind herself they hadn't won the cup just yet. After the crowd had somewhat broken apart, Fred and George fought through the crowd to reach her.
"Did you see them?!" Fred asked.
"See who?" Carina said.
"Them," George muttered, grabbing Carina's shoulders and pointing her towards Draco, Crabbe, Goyle, and Marcus Flint, all dressed up as Dementors.
"You're kidding... they dressed up as Dementors?!" Carina shrieked.
"Sure did, reckon they're trying to sabotage Harry," George continued, "but for now, party in Gryffindor Common Room!" Fred exclaimed.
"Come on Harry! Party, Gryffindor common room, now!" George shouted. The team lead the way to the castle triumphantly with the remainder of the house following behind them.
"We won..." Oliver murmured repeatedly as if it hadn't hit him yet. They were still dressed in their scarlet Quidditch robes when they entered the portrait hole, but a party erupted anyway. Gryffindors from ever year crowded the crammed space, and Carina was happily situated near the rest of the team in the center. Before the party had really gotten interesting, Fred and George yanked Carina towards the portrait hole, each looping an arm through hers.
"Where are we going?!" Carina shouted.
"Don't worry about it!" they exclaimed.
"Isn't it past curfew? We don't have the map anymore!" Carina whispered.
"Carrie, do you really think," Fred began, "that we would walk around so carelessly after curfew?" George finished. Both twins wore maniacal smirks.
"Yes..."
"I suppose you're right," Fred began, "but not this time!" George exclaimed, pulling out the Marauders Map from his pocket.
"Would you like to do the honor, Carrie?" Fred asked.
"I thought you gave that to Harry!"
"We did, just... borrowed it for a little while."
"I see... I solemnly swear that I am up to no good," Carina uttered, pointing her want at the map. Within seconds, the familiar black ink spread across the pages, revealing that there was no one in the corridors at all.
"I missed that," Carina whispered with a smile spread across her lips.
"Us too," the twins replied before scurrying to the one-eyed witch statue.
"Ladies first," the twins murmured after stating the password. Carina gladly hopped onto the slide, which carried her down to the pathway. Fred and George appeared after her, and the three walked down the dimly lit passage to Honeydukes.
"So Carrie," Fred began, "we haven't talked in awhile," George continued, "meaning all day," Fred added, "but how's Wood been treating you?" they finished in unison.
"You're just wondering if he was upset with me for missing practice, aren't you?"
"Possibly...."
"Well, he was pretty mad... started yelling at me, actually, but we... erm... worked it out," Carina finished, her cheeks turning a slight shade of pink.
"Worked it out?" Fred asked.
"Yeah... worked it out," Carina concluded, her face now beet red.
"We've failed, Fred."
"I know, George."
"What do you mean you've failed?! Oliver is my boyfriend! I'm allowed to snog him!" Carina exclaimed.
"As long as we keep it at that," George murmured, "and no longer than a minute!" Fred added. Carina playfully slapped the two as they continued down the path. It took about an hour to walk down the entire length of the path, and Carina was rather delighted when they arrived at the staircase leading to the basement.
"Okay, you know the drill! Go up there and grab whatever you see!" Fred exclaimed. The twins happily pushed up the floorboard, allowing for Carina to sneak in and grab as many bags of sweets as she could carry without the shop owner noticing.
"I hear footsteps," George whispered from underneath the lifted floorboard. After George pointed it out, she could hear them too. It sounded like a rather large man was stomping across the ceiling.
"Carrie, hurry!" Fred whispered. She had just grabbed a bag of Licorice Wands from the shelf, before hearing the door to the basement open.
"Who's there?" the voice grumbled. Carina knew that if she didn't get to the floorboard in time, she'd be in trouble, but that she also couldn't be too noisy, or else the man would know she was there. She tiptoed across the floor with various sweets in hand, careful not to drop any, before the man began pounding down the stairs. After hearing this, the twins' eyes went wide. Carina ditched her quiet act, and sprinted across the basement, practically diving through the hole in the floor. Just as she thought she had made it, a burly hand wrapped itself around her ankle.
"He's got me!" Carina whispered to the twins. Both of their eyes went even wider, and they pulled her arms with all of her might.
"You can't get away that easily!" the man shouted, grabbing for her other ankle. He was unsuccessful in finding it, and his grip faltered when he tried to reach for it. Fred and George took their chance to yank Carina free. The three sat on the ground panting, but just as they thought they were safe, the floorboard was removed entirely.
"RUN!" Fred yelled. The trio sprinted down the passageway as quickly as they could, successfully rounding a corner to avoid being spotted. It took them less than a half hour to reach the castle, but they tucked themselves in a corner to ensure that the man wasn't chasing them. Each one was panting from the sprint, but attempted to muffle their breath to avoid being heard.
"Bloody hell... that was awesome!" Carina exclaimed when it became clear that the man wasn't chasing them.
"Right you are, Malfoy," George agreed. They checked the map once more, and climbed out of the statue when it was confirmed to be safe.
"Where to now?" Carina whispered.
"The Kitchens," George replied. The three silently walked to the Kitchens, and Carina tickled the pear when they arrived at the portrait.
"Perfect. George and I will get drinks, you get snacks," Fred stated. They each retrieved their items, before marching back to Gryffindor common room, arms full. It had been nearly two hours without them, but the party was still as lively as ever when they strolled through the portrait hole. Carina and George began throwing Peppermint Toads into the crowd, earning cheers from everyone. Fred placed bottles of butterbeer and pumpkin fizz on a table in the center of the party, along with various foods. Both twins then stood up on the table.
"WHO'S READY TO PARTY?" Fred shouted, earning a monstrous roar from the house. The twins began juggling bottles of butterbeer, while a pair of hands snaked around Carina's waist amongst the crowd.
"WE WON!" Oliver shouted, turning Carina to face him, "WE ACTUALLY WON! WE HAVE A CHANCE TO WIN THE CUP! OH MY GOODNESS, I COULD KISS YOU RIGHT NOW!"
"WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR, THEN?" Carina shouted over the crowd. Oliver didn't even bother taking Carina to another room as he smashed his lips into hers.
"GET A ROOM!" someone from nearby shouted, and Oliver did just that, picking Carina up bridal style and carrying her towards the boys dormitories. From behind, they heard a deafening crack of glass shattering.
"OI, WHERE DO YOU THINK YOU'RE GOING?!" Fred shouted from the table. All heads turned to the couple, who were already up the first step to the dormitories.
"THAT'S OUR BEST FRIEND!" George added.
"Oh no," Oliver muttered into Carina's ear as the twins hopped down from the table and marched towards them, the crowd parting for the two.
"What did you have planned for her, Wood?" Fred questioned, eyebrows raised.
"We were only snogging!" Oliver exclaimed.
"Sure, that's all you had in mind," George joked, before dragging them both to the table.
"LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, OUR CAPTAIN!" the twins yelled, earning cheers from the common room. The party continued well into the night until Professor McGonagall came through the portrait hole around one in the morning, telling them to go to bed. Angelina, Alicia, and Carina bidded Katie Bell goodnight, before walking to their own dormitory and changing into pajamas.
"So Carina, what happened between you and Oliver?" Angelina asked.
"Just a bit of snogging," Carina replied. She was exhausted from the day, and the last thing she wanted to dow as talk about drama.
"Nothing more?" Alicia asked suggestively.
"Nope... Oliver isn't really like that."
"So you two were actually just going to find a room to snog in?" Angelina questioned.
"Yup," Carina replied, her eyelids drooping. She zoned out for the remainder of their conversation as sleep gradually took her, but before it did, a tumultuous shriek startled her.
