Chapter Nineteen

On the evening of her detention, Carina skipped dinner as she trudged to Professor Lockhart's office. She hadn't met the man yet, but judging by his appearance at Flourish and Blotts, she didn't want to. When she entered his office, she was suprised to see Harry already there, quill in hand.

"Writing lines?" Carina asked while glancing at the many photographs of Lockhart around the room.

"Oh, you must be Miss Malfoy! I'm sure you already know who I am!" Professor Lockhart gloated.

"Actually, I don't," Carina lied, earning a snicker from Harry.

"Oh, well perhaps this will remind you?" Lockhart asked as he motioned towards a pile of his written works.

"Hm... I can't say that it does..." she continued.

"I see, well, now you have the pleasure of finding out! I happen to be an internationally famous wizard, and the winner of Witch Weekly's 'Most Charming-Smile Award.'" Lockhart stated as he flashed Carina his 'award winning' smile.

"Really, what're you famous for?" Carina asked boldly.

"Well, being a spectacular wizard with good looks of course!"

"Hm... it's a shame I've never heard of you."

"Indeed, but today, you will be answering fan mail for me! Just writing the addresses of course, but still an honor! Answering letters for a celebrity!" Lockhart said while motioning for Carina to take a seat. As soon as she she sat down, Lockhart placed a huge pile of envelopes in front of her with an even lengthier list of names.

"Well, those won't write themselves!" Lockhart encouraged. Carina began scribbling down names while Lockhart lectured Harry about his 'fame and fortune.' Harry looked just about read to die.

After what felt like fifty years of writing, Carina began to wonder when they would stop. That was until Harry violently jumped from his chair.

"What?" Harry asked.

"I know!" Lockhart replied.

"No, that voice!" Harry exclaimed.

"What voice, Harry?" Carina asked hesitantly.

"That - that voice that said - didn't you hear it?" He asked.

"What are you talking about, Harry? Perhaps you're getting a little drowsy? Great Scott - look at the time! We've been here nearly four hours! I'd never have believed it - the time's flown, hasn't it?" Lockhart asked. Neither Harry nor Carina responded, but instead packed their items and shuffled out of the classroom.

"Are you alright, Harry?" Carina asked with a concerned expression as they entered the corridor.

"I... I think so, I just heard this voice," Harry replied.

"What'd it say?"

"It... I didn't hear it clearly," Harry murmured.

"Oh... well, that's strange," Carina replied warily.

"Yeah, it was," Harry commented.

"Wattlebird," Carina said, causing the Fat-Lady to swing open.

"Well, goodnight, Harry," Carina murmured as she walked off to her dormitory.

"Goodnight, Carina."

With Halloween approaching, Carina was working nonstop to beat the Twins in their annual prank war.

"What're you up to?" Oliver asked as he plopped into he seat beside her.

"Pranks," she replied while scribbling down various ideas.

"Well, let's hear it!" Oliver exclaimed, slinging his arm around her shoulders.

"I can't tell anyone this!"

"You really expect me to spoil your ideas?"

"No, but this is top secret stuff, no one can know about my pranks! Especially not my Halloween pranks."

"Not even your boyfriend?" Oliver begged with puppy eyes.

"Nope," Carina smirked as she laid her head in his lap.

"Oh, but then you do this," Oliver murmured while playing with her hair.

"Yup, and you love every second of it," Carina replied with a smirk.

"You're not wrong... but I'm still curious."

"Halloween plans? You're not the only curious one, Wood," Fred commented as he took a seat in a nearby armchair.

"As a matter of fact, I think I might take a look!" George exclaimed as he grabbed for Carina's notebook. Her reflexes were swifter.

"Oh, not again!" Carina laughed as she ran to the girls' dormitories and hid her notebook. On the way out, she ran into Ginny Weasley.

"Hi, Ginny!" Carina greeted.

"Hello," Ginny replied unsurely, then stepped around Carina and jogged up the remaining stairs. It's progress, Carina thought as she returned to her friends.

"Hey, Wood, when's the next Quidditch practice?" George asked.

"Are you kidding?" Wood asked.

"Nope."

"In a half hour ."

"You're joking," Fred replied.

"No, so I recommend you get ready," Oliver said. Both Twins jumped from their seats and ran to get changed.

"Isn't Quidditch practice an hour away?" Carina asked when the Twins were out of sight.

"Yup, but without them here, I can do this," Oliver said, then leaned in and kissed Carina. The pair snogged until they couldn't breath, leaving them both gasping for air on the couch.

"Oi, why aren't you dressed?!" Fred asked when he came back down. Carina couldn't help but laugh at his confused expression. He looked between Carina and Oliver for an answer, "Oh, I get it... you just wanted a mid-afternoon snogging seasion with my best friend!"

"All I heard was snog session and best friend, but I do not approve!" George called as he entered the common room.

"Oh, don't worry about it," Carina commented as she patted both of the Twins on the head on her way to change.

"You're just going to leave me here with them?" Oliver cried from the couch.

"Yup!" Carina called, then proceeded to grab her Quidditch robes from her dormitory. Once ready, the four trudged out to the Quidditch pitch as rain poured down on them.

"Why are we practicing in this?" Carina asked while bellowing to the storm surrounding them.

"This is what it takes to win, Carina," Oliver replied. Her and the Twins rolled their eyes in response, but continued walking nonetheless. That practice, Oliver pushed the team incredilby hard, so much so that Carina was covered from head to toe in mud by the end. She had fallen onto the ground numerous times while practicing diving, and the winds certainly hadn't helped either.

"Hey, Carina," Fred whispered at the end of practice, "come with us," George finished. With a brief glance at Oliver, who wasn't paying any attention to them, the three slipped out of the locker room and began walking towards the Quidditch pitch.

"What's this all about?" Carina asked when they were a reasonable distance away from the lockerroom.

"We're going to spy on Slytherin," Fred stated. With a nod from Carina, the three climbed the stands, and huddled behind the railing.

"When is their practice?" Carina whispered.

"In an hour."

"So we're just going to sit here in the pouring rain for an hour until they show up?"

"Yup," the Twins replied in unison, and the three did exactly that. Carina was shivering to the bone when Slytherin finally arrived.

"Don't you think they'll be able to see us right here?" Carina asked.

"Not if they don't look!"

"Oh dear," Carina mumbled. The three peeked over the side, watching as Marcus Flint organized the practice. Slytherin soon began to fly, practically shooting around like comets as they played.

"Bloody Hell," Fred began, "they're fast," George finished. Carina's jaw dropped. She had felt what it was like to fly on one, but watching them all together was quite different.

"Well, Carrie, you're going to have to be our shining star!" George joked. The Slytherins continued to play at the quickest pace Carina had ever seen. Each Chaser only held the Quaffle for less than three seconds, before either shooting it or passing it.  Meanwhile Fred, George, and Carina sat in awe. She also couldn't help but notice that her brother had gotten much faster, and was finding the Snitch much sooner.

"Wait until Wood hears about this!" George exclaimed as the three jogged back to the castle.

"Oi, Wood! Guess what!" Fred called when they burst through the portrait hole.

"Where've you three been?"

"Slytherin is BLOODY FAST!" George exclaimed.

"Don't tell my you were spying on them," Wood mumbled with a face palm.

"Oh, don't worry about us, we're perfectly fine," Fred began

"But you won't be when you see how fast they are!" George finished.

"Was it really that bad?"\

"Yes."

"Great."

-

Halloween arrived, and Carina was prepared to beat the Twins again. She began her day in Fred and Georges' dormitory. Carina gingerly opened their door, flinching when it squeaked. She then pulled each goblet out one by one from her magically expanded handbag, laid them all out on the floor directly next to one another, and cast a spell to fill them. By the time she was finished, there wasnt a single space on the floor that was exposed. She then strutted down the steps of the boys dormitories, only to run into Oliver Wood.

"Carina?! What're you doing in the Twins' room?" Oliver asked suspiciously as he approached her.

"Shhhhhhhhh," Carina shushed, then grabbed his hand and lead him to the common room.

"What is going on?" Oliver asked. His expression almost looked pained, and Carina soon realized why.

"I swear, it wasn't like that! I was setting up my first prank!" Carina exclaimed as she held Oliver's face between her hands.

"A... are you sure?" Oliver stuttered.

"Yes, I wouldn't do something like that! Oliver I've told you numerous times, there's nothing between either one of the Twins and myself!" Carina exclaimed.

"You had me concerned for a second there," Oliver whispered while engilfing Carina in a hug. She hugged him back, before a stream of eggs washed over them both.

"Gross!" Carina exclaimed as she wiped the slimy egg yolks from her eyes.

"Bloody hell, you lot don't play around!" Oliver gasped. Fred Weasley stood behind them in an armchair, holding a large, empty tub.

"Right you are, Wood! And nice try with the goblets, Carrie, but we were watching you the entire time!" George exclaimed.

"I must admit, you got me with this one," Carina added with a grin. She then rushed to her dormitory to change. She was so focused on getting the egg yolks out of her hair, that she didnt even notice the trip wire crossing the stairs. She tripped, falling face first onto the steps, before the slimy eggs on her clothing caused her to slide all the way down the steps.

"You two are horrid!" Carina shriekd as the Twins sniggered from behind.

"You're not doing so well today, Carina!" Lee called from the couches. She stuck her tongue out at him, before Oliver walked to her side and helped the girl up.

"You lot really take this seriously," he muttered into Carina's ear, earning a laugh from the girl.

"Remember last year when I slapped you in the face? Well that's because I thought it was a prank!" Carina exclaimed, then rushed back up to her dormitory, careful to avoid the wire. She hastily changed and showered, then, after realizing she skipped breakfast, trudged to her Potions class.

"Oi, Carina, what's wrong with your hair?" Angelina asked when Carina arrived in the dungeons.

"What do you-" Carina began, but was cut off by a classroom full of laughter. Carina quickly picked up a strand of her hair, expecting it to be platinum blonde, but instead it was lime green.

"Oh, not again!" Carina cried as she plunked into her chair beside Fred.

"We finally dyed your hair!" Fred exclaimed as he ran a hand through her green hair with a grin.

"Inwas so busy with getting the egg yolks off of me that I didn't even think about what I was putting in my hair. I'm rather impressed, really," Carina added. That class, they brewed a Forgetfulness Potion, but Carina slipped a few extra ingredients into her pockets when Snape wasn't looking. As the bell rang, she excused herself from the Twins, and bolted to the girl's bathroom on the second floor. Carina got to work setting up her potions station, and began brewing her next prank. She sat there for the remainder of the day, carefully adding ingredients, and following directions. After several hours, her potion turned a sparkling shade of blood-red, and she bottled two vials of the potion, placing them both into her pocket. Perfect, Carina thought as she rushed out of the bathroom, but she happened to run into Ginny Weasley.

"Ginny!" Carina exclaimed when she saw the tiny, redheaded girl.

"Carina Malfoy," Ginny remarked with a twisted grin.

"Yup, that's me... are you okay?" Carina asked shakily as she looked into Ginny's calm eyes.

"Me? Oh, yes, I'm fine," Ginny replied confidently.

"Well, that's great! Speaking of which, there's something I've been wanting to tell you," Carina added.

"Yes?"

"That book," Carina said while pointing at the small, black book which she recognized from Malfoy Manor, "I... I think you should throw it out."

"Throw it out?!"

"Yes... you see, I do believe it's dangerous. I'm not quite sure how yet, but I really think that I should take it from you now," Carina suggested as she reached for the book.

"NO!" Ginny growled, while slapping Carina's hand out of the air. Carina stared at the girl with enormous, grey eyes. This wasn't like the Ginny she knew at all.

"Uh... Ginny... are you sure you're alright?" Carina asked with a worried expression. Am I too late? Carina thought to herself.

"Yes, of course! Why wouldn't I be?" Ginny replied with a smile.

"Oh, no reason," Carina replied sarcastically, then turned and sprinted out of the bathroom. I have to tell Dumbledore, she thought as she ran. On the way to his office, she happened to checked the potions in her pocket, ensuring that they were the correct shade of red before she gave it to her best friends. As she looked through the vial, a pair of gleaming, yellow eyes greeted her own.
