Chapter Nine
"Carrie!" The twins chorused as Carina walked off the train.
"Hi! How's your holiday been?" Carina asked, hugging them both.
"Bloody amazing! Did you hear about Snape's hair?" George exclaimed.
"Yes, I wish I was there to see that!"
"You should've seen his face," Fred added as the trio burst into laughter.
"How about you?" George asked solemnly while they strolled to their dormitories
"It was better than I expected. Father and I didn't get into any disagreements and I got this," Carina replied while holding out her necklace.
"Wicked," the twins answered in awe. Despite their opposing family histories, they knew how much Carina yearned for family approval.
"I know, I was pretty suprised myself. Mother gave it to me and said that they were finally accepting my sorting," Carina continued.
"So they don't hate you anymore?" Fred asked bluntly.
"I really don't think they do... and they had Draco take me shopping for my birthday, so if they do then they aren't showing it."
"That's amazing, Carina!" George added.
"Speaking of which, how'd you like the fireworks I got you? Have you tried them out yet?"
"You know it," Fred began, "tried them in the Great Hall," George finished with a smirk.
"Sounds like I've missed a lot!"
"You have."
-
"How exactly do you plan to get away with this?" Carina asked after Fred explained their idea of having every chalice in the Great Hall spurt water like a fountain.
"We blame it all on you," George joked, poking Carina in the arm.
"This plan sounds worse by the second."
"Oh no, just listen, it only gets better!" Fred proclaimed with a grin.
"Well, explain it then because so far, I'm not seeing much potential..."
"Ouch," George began, "that one hurt," Fred finished, clutching their chests in defeat.
"Oh, will you just explain it?"
"Only if you say please... and that you're sorry."
"I'm sorry for stating the truth, now please explain it!"
"Not when you say it like that."
"Oh, for goodness sakes, just tell me the plan!"
"There you go. Basically, we start off in the Kitchens right? Tickle the pear and everything, hopefully they share some food, and meanwhile one of us goes to the dish cabinets and enchants every single one of the glasses to spurt drinks like a fountain!" George exclaimed.
"That's pretty good... How would we have time to enchant every chalice though?"
"Fred and I can eat for a long time."
"Okay, but do you know any enchantment which creates a fountain?"
"No..."
"I suppose we should go back to the drawing board then," Carina suggested, earning glares from the twins.
"What's going on here?" A Scottish accent interrupted from behind.
"Oliver!" Carina exclaimed. She immediately shot up from the couch and hugged him.
"Hi, hello, I prefer to breathe," Oliver croaked.
"Oh, sorry about that. How was Spain?"
"It was incredible! And how was your family?"
"Better than expected," was all Carina said before grabbing Oliver's hand and dragging him across the room.
"I'll be back in a few minutes!" Carina called to the twins. She couldn't help but notice the expressions of disappointment on their faces as she left.
"So, tell me about your vacation!" Carina exclaimed, plopping into a plush loveseat and pulling Oliver next to her.
"Oh, where do I even begin? We went to a Quidditch match, Spain versus Poland, and it was crazy! Spain's stadium was so COOL! It was built entirely out of stone, which to me seemed kind of painful to fall on, but I guess in professional Quidditch someone will be there to stop you. And the game itself, it was extraordinary! Spain was so good, but then Poland started to make a comeback, but then Spain's Seeker caught the Snitch! And their Keeper, Sendelina Felino, she was amazing. Honestly, I'm suprised Poland was even able to score points on her," Oliver lectured.
"So I take it the trip was good, then?"
"Yes, and how was life at your mansion?"
"It actually wasn't all that bad. Father was finally proud of me for something, and he even acknowledged my birthday this year, which hasn't happened since before my first year," Carina explained.
"They don't usually celebrate your birthday?!" Oliver asked in shock.
"No, ever since I was sorted into Gryffindor Father really preferred not to acknowledge me at all... I suppose he was embarrassed for having a Gryffindor in his family... But I'm glad to see that it's getting better!"
"He kind of seems like a git..."
"He can be, but I do lo-" Carina began, but was distracted as a first year tumbled through the portrait hole. He had clearly been under the Leg-Locker Curse as he bunnyhopped into the common room and fell to the floor. As if on command, Hermione jumped from her seat and ran to complete the countercurse.
"What happened Neville?" Hermione cried, holding out her hand for Neville.
"Malfoy, I met him outside the library. He said he'd be looking for someone to practice that on," Neville explained while gasping desperately for air. Carina didn't even bother to bid Oliver goodbye as she sprang to her feet and strode furiously out the door.
"Carina? Where are you going? Was it something I said?" Oliver asked frantically. A pang of guilt washed over her, but she couldn't stop herself at that point. She had always been hot-headed, especially about her brother's disrespectfulness, but deep down she knew that Draco was a good person. He had just been influenced a bit too much by their parents, something which Carina had managed to avoid. Carina was practically running by the time she left the common room, and she knocked over anyone who dared to interrupt her path. Outside the library, she spotted Draco and his delinquents casting various spells on another student. Carina's hands clasped into fists and she felt her face redden as she approached. Once in range, her fist slammed straight into Draco's jaw. Her brother fell flat onto the ground as he whimpered in pain, earning a look of great disgust from his sister. In the background(a crowd had now gathered around them), she heard the twins cheer, but even that couldn't bring a smile to her face at that moment.
"WHAT ON EARTH DO YOU THINK YOU'RE DOING?" Carina growled.
"I could ask you the same, Sister," Draco sneered, spitting blood onto her shoes. She held back the urge to punch him again, forcing her fists into her pockets.
"ARE YOU SERIOUS RIGHT NOW? Bullying first years to make yourself seem extraordinary? Real classy, Draco!" Carina shrieked.
"Wait until I tell Father about this!" Was all Draco said as his pudgy sidekicks lifted him from the ground.
"As if Father could hate me any less?" Carina spat.
"What is going on here?!" Professor Flitwick exclaimed, jumping between the two siblings. Carina stared down the the stout man before her, and immediately realized her mistake.
"Professor, Draco was bullying first years!" Hermione yelled from the crowd around him.
"I understand that, but what are you doing here, Ms. Malfoy?" Professor Flitwick asked.
"I... I'm sorry, Professor, my anger got the best of me," Carina stuttered before seeing Draco's mouth tilt upwards in the corner of her eye, only infuriating her more.
"I'm very disappointed in both of you! Come along, and as for you all, shoo! There's nothing to see here!" Professor Flitwick ordered, then lead the two to his office. On the way there, she clenched her jaw to avoid saying something she would later regret.
"Take a seat, both of you. Professor Snape and Professor McGonagall are on their way." Carina did as she was told, and watched as the other teachers strode into the room.
"Explain, both of you!" Professor Flitwick encouraged.
"Well Professor, I was just sitting in Gryffindor common room talking, when a first year boy named Neville practically tumbled through the portrait hole after being placed in the Leg-Locker Curse. We asked him what happened and he told us that Malfoy had gotten to him. I, being his sister, was enraged with Draco for bullying the boy, so I marched straight to the library, where Neville had said Draco was, and punched him square in the face. It was really a sporadic situation, I swear," Carina explained with pleading eyes.
"And for you, Draco? Is this true?" Professor Snape inquired.
"Of course it isn't! I was just waiting for Crabbe to drop off his book from the Library, and Neville happened to trip. That's probably why he was hobbling so much," Draco lied.
"Then why did the countercurse work on him?!" Carina growled.
"Calm down, Ms. Malfoy. This seems extremely out of character for you," Professor McGonagall ordered.
"Draco, tell the truth," Professor Snape demanded.
"Oh, fine! I wanted to practice the Leg-Locker Curse!" Draco exclaimed in defeat.
"That is quite inappropriate Mr. Malfoy, I'm going to have to-" Professor McGonagall began, but was immediately cut off by Professor Snape, "I do believe that his punishment is my responsibility, Minerva."
"I suppose you are correct, Severus, but he has broken several school policies," Professor McGonagall stated.
"I am aware of this, now come along, Draco," Professor Snape urged as he lead Carina's brother out of the room.
"As for you Ms. Malfoy, you are my responsibility... I am afraid that I will have to take 20 points from Gryffindor, and you will have detention with me tomorrow night," Professor McGonagall stated, "I'm very disappointed. This is not the sort of behavior I would have expected from you."
"I'm sorry Professor, I really am. If it had been anyone else, I probably wouldn't have reacted so harshly, but my own brother... I can't stand it when he acts like that! Did you say tomorrow night? Professor, that's our last Quidditch practice before the match... I won't be able to play if I'm not there tomorrow,"Carina exclaimed.
"I'm sure that you and Mr. Wood can work something out. In the meantime, I recommend that you get to bed," Professor McGonagall instructed. With a sad nod, Carina bidded her Professors goodnight and walked back to the Gryffindor common room.
"That was bloody awesome!" the twins shrieked when Carina entered the room.
"What happened exactly?" Oliver asked.
"She clocked her brother straight in the jaw!" Fred exclaimed as he and his brother recreated the scene.
"You did? What'd McGonagall do?" Oliver questioned,.
"Took twenty points from Gryffindor and gave me a detention for tomorrow night."
"Tomorrow night? That's our last practice before the Hufflepuff match," Oliver gasped.
"I know, I tried to convince her to change it but she wouldn't budge... Any chance I could still play at the match?"
"I suppose we could work something out," Oliver replied with a smirk.
"What exactly do you have in mind?" Carina inquired suspiciously.
"Oh I don't know... perhaps a kiss?" Oliver asked.
"Oi, we're still here y'know!" George shouted from the sofa behind them. With a roll of her eyes, Carina stood on her tippy toes and kissed Oliver on the cheek.
"You cheesy little bastard. How's that?"
"I suppose that'll do... for now."
-
The Gryffindor-Hufflepuff match had arrived, and Oliver couldn't be more enthusiastic as he lectured the team; Although, much to the team's delight, he cut his speech short, pulling Harry aside.
"The whole school's out there! Even - blimey- Dumbledore's come to watch!" Fred exclaimed as he stuck his head out the door.
"Dumbledore?" Harry asked, sprinting to see for himself. He looked just about ready to faint.
"Come on!" Oliver ordered, plowing past Harry. They marched across the field and Carina couldn't help but notice Snape's livid expression.
"Reckon he's going to murder us all today?" Carina muttered to the twins. Their reply was cut short as Snape ordered the players to mount their brooms. With a blow of his whistle, the match had begun.
"And they're off! Gryffindor Chaser Carina Malfoy catches the Quaffle and off she goes -and rather fast at that - a clean pass to Gryffindor Chaser Angeli - OH, Gryffindor Beater George Weasley hits the Bludger straight to Snape - I reckon Snape deserved that - only joking, Professor!" Lee commented. Carina watched Angelina grumpily toss the Quaffle to a Hufflepuff Chaser. Come on, Oliver, she thought.
"HUFFLEPUFF SCORES! Gryffindor Chaser Alicia Spinnet regains possession and - WHAT WAS THAT FOR?!" Lee shouted. Snape had given Hufflepuff another penalty for no particular reason.
"HUFFLEPUFF SCORES - Chaser Angelina Johnson catches the Quaffle and - Harry Potter appears to have seen the Snitch! He dives, and - GRYFFINDOR WINS BY ONE HUNDRED FIFTY TO TWENTY!" Lee cheered. The crowds roared as Carina flew to the ground, astonished at how quickly the match went by.
"Well done, Harry!" Oliver exclaimed. patting the boy on the shoulder.
"Amazing, Harry!" Carina shrieked as she engulfed the boy in a hug. Within seconds, the twins had ripped her off of the boy and lifted him onto their shoulders, parading Harry around for all to see.
"We've got Potter!" they exclaimed, massive grins coating their faces. A little while later, Carina was one of the last to finish getting ready as she pulled off her Quidditch robes. The twins had gone back to the school with Lee, but Oliver hung back to wait with her.
"Bloody amazing," was the only thing Oliver could mutter as he shook his head in disbelief.
"Oliver, you haven't said anything else since we won the match," Carina commented.
"Bloody amazing."
"Have you been brainwashed?" Carina asked jokingly, waving her arm in front of his eyes.
"Bloody amazing," Oliver repeated with a smirk in Carina's direction.
"Oh, now you're doing it on purpose!"
"Bloody amazing," Oliver repeated again, this time nearing the girl.
"Woah, have you been possessed too?" Carina questioned as Oliver approached her. Within seconds, he was directly in front of her with a cheeky grin on his face. Out of the corner of her eye, Carina saw Harry walk out of the room, and decided it was for his own good.
"There's only one thing that could make this day any better," Oliver murmured as the space between them continued to shrink by the second.
"And what's that?" Carina teased with a smirk of her own.
"This," Oliver replied while leaning in. Carina found her heart rate elevating, but leaned in nonetheless. He snaked his arms around her waist, while she tangled her hands in his hair. Finally, their lips met, and Carina jumped when her stomach felt as if it were somersaulting.
"Did I hurt you, love?" Oliver asked worriedly, pulling away from the kiss to check on her.
"N... no, that was bloody amazing," Carina whispered, causing a smile to spread across his face.
"Amazing, huh? Well Carina, you're bloody amazing, and I think it's time to ask this... will you be my girlfriend?" Oliver asked. His honey-brown eyes rested on her stone-grey ones, and his hands trembled at her waist while he waited for a response.
