Chapter Four
Before Carina knew it, Halloween was around the corner. She sat in the Gryffindor common room wearing her coziest pajamas, curled up in front of the fire with a notebook in hand. On the table before her, she had various pranking supplies scattered across the surface. She stared at each one intently, hoping that one would spark an idea in her mind.
"Whatcha doing?" Katie Bell questioned, plopping into the seat beside Carina.
"It's a secret," Carina whispered with a slight giggle, stuffing the supplies into her pockets.
"Carina, You can't keep secrets from me!"
"Oh, but I really can. You know, if I ever told you my Halloween plans the entire school would find out," Carina explained as she shut the notebook. Every year on Halloween, Carina and the twins planned a competition\ where they would attempt to 'outprank' the others, with Lee as their judge. In the past, George had won every competition, and she wouldn't allow that to happen again.
"Did someone say Halloween plans?" George questioned, stalking up behind the two.
"No, now go and make your own plans," Carina murmured, sliding her own notebook under a nearby pillow.
"Well, what's the fun in that when I can steal yours?" George asked. Carina knew that was her cue to run, and run she did. She jumped up from her warm spot near the fire and dashed out of the common room with George on her tail.
"Come back here, Malfoy!" He cried, but Carina had no intent of slowing down. She ran with twists and turns, trying to throw off George at every junctuon she could. Eventually, one of the moving staircases cut him off, and Carina was able to escape with her tongue stuck out in George's direction. She continued to run through various corridors, that is until she ran into something... or rather someone.
-
"You do realize how suspicious your behavior is, correct?" Professor Snape asked, pacing in the front of the Potions classroom.
"Yes sir," Carina replied with her head bowed. Although she enjoyed pranking for an adrenaline rush, the consequences were typically something she overlooked.
"So tell me, Ms. Malfoy, why you are scurrying through the corridors like a madwoman? I know your father would not approve of such behavior. Have the Gryffindors been getting to you?" He questioned with his long, pointed nose in her direction.
"I was running from a friend, sir."
"A friend? Yes, it is most appropriate to run away from friends. Perhaps you could come up with a better excuse."
"No sir, I was actually running from a friend," Carina mumbled.
"Five points from Gryffindor for lying and be glad that it wasn't more," Snape hissed then stalked to his office and slammed the door shut, leaving Carina alone in the Potions classroom. Perfect, Carina thought as she stood up from her seat. One of the pranks she had planned required various ingredients, and this seemed like a perfect opportunity to collect them. With Snape isolated in his office, she swiftly scanned the shelves of the classroom for a variety of ingredients, pouring them into vials as she went. Carina could only hope that Snape remained in his office. Once she found everything she was looking for, she tucked the various flasks and jars into her cloak, then strutted out of the classroom. She wove quickly through various corridors, but as she turned one corner in particular, she spotted her Marcus Flint and Adrian Pucey. Her primal instinct was to turn on her heel and run, but she forced herself to remain strong and continue walking.
"Is that Carina Malfoy?" Adrian mocked as he and Marcus blocked her path.
"Yes it is, now please move," Carina instructed.
"No can do Ms. Malfoy," Adrian continued, "Is it true that you own a Nimbus Two Thousand?"
"I guess you could consider it mine."
"Well, we'd like to try it out," Marcus stated bluntly.
"That's rather unfortunate."
"I don't think it is... if you don't let us try your broom then we won't let you move from this corridor, and certainly you don't want to be caught by Snape again," Adrian replied, a maniacal grin on his face. With a glare, Carina attempted to push past Marcus and Adrian, but the boys didn't budge.
"Now, you two better let me by or else I'm going to hex you both into oblivion and that is a promise," Carina threatened as she reached for her wand; however, her wand wasn't there.
"Nice try," Marcus spat, reaching into his pocket and pulling out her wand.
"You nasty little-" Carina started but was cut off by echoing footsteps. The three looked up from their spot and again, Carina prayed the it wasn't Professor Snape.
"What is going on here?" Oliver questioned, glancing at the scene before him in confusion.
"Perhaps you could give me a hand and I'll explain later? They've stolen my wand!" Carina suggested eagerly.
"What? Oh, yes of course... get away from her!" Oliver shouted as he marched over to the Slytherins, "She is a player on my team and I will not tolerate anyone treating my teammates like this! Give the wand back now, and if you know what's good for you, you'll both be leaving now," Carina's jaw dropped at his change in tone, but the boys wouldn't move.
"Why should we listen to you?" Marcus spat.
"Because your team could get suspended if you don't," Oliver muttered.
"As if you'd actually tell anyone about this," Adrian commented.
"Oh believe me, he would in a second," Carina said.
"Well then, let's see it Wood, go tell on us," Marcus insisted. Wood stood in his place, unable to leave Carina's side. She knew that she had to think fast to get out of this situation, and immediately, a thought came to mind. Her hand slipped into her pocket while the others argued, and felt for a small, packaged Dungbomb, silently thanking herself for bringing the supplies along. She hastily unwrapped the package, then threw the Dungbomb at the boys. They seemed rather shocked as she slipped her hand into Marcus' pocket, pulling out her wand. Oliver seemed to realize her plan, and grabbed her arm once she had retrieved her wand, leaving Adrian and Marcus in a terrible stench. Together they ran, and Carina couldn't help but laugh at the excitement. Oliver looked at her as if she had five heads, before stopping abruptly on the side of a hallway.
"Did you actually enjoy that?" he asked in disbelief.
"Of course I did! I'm best friends with he twins for a reason!"
"Weird.... what did they want from you anyways?"
"To try out my broom."
"Ah, well that makes sense, who wouldn't want to try that lovely out?"
"Did you just call my broom lovely?"
"Yes, yes I did. It really is amazing," Oliver sighed, "Oi, did you hear about our new Seeker?"
"No, who's the lucky one?"
"Harry Potter"
"What? Isn't he a first-year?" Carina asked. First years aren't allowed to play Quidditch... I suppose I could get closer to Harry this way though, Carina thought.
"Yes, but the kid's a natural. McGonagall brought him to me."
"That's impressive... last time I heard, he had no idea what the wizarding world even was!"
"Yes, it did seem that way, but on a different note, could I ask you something?" Oliver inquired eagerly.
"Uh, sure... you really don't need to ask for permission."
"Well... I guess what I really wanted to know was... is there something going on between you and one of the Weasley twins?" Oliver questioned.
"What? No! Not at all, why do you even ask that?" Carina exclaimed with a puzzled expression cast upon her face.
"I just had to know... you know... for the team! Yes, of course, I have to be sure that there's nothing going on between teammates," Oliver stated sheepishly. Carina nodded with narrow eyes before backing away slowly.
"Okay, well, I must be off, erm.... Bye!" Carina bidded before turning sharply on her heel and jogging away, but Oliver followed her.
"Carina, wait!" He cried.
"No, I really must be going! It's past my bed time now... you did say that players need rest," Carina called over her shoulder before pacing faster. She heard Oliver let out a sigh in defeat, and glanced over her shoulder to see him walking away in the opposite direction. That was odd, she thought, why would he care if there was something between me and the twins?
She returned to an empty common room, and gladly entered her dormitory. Upon her arrival, two heads shot up in unison.
"Carina! Where've you been? George reckons you got a detention! Is it true? Are you alright? Why are you so flustered?" Alicia Spinnet questioned with a look of concern coating her face.
"I'm fine girls, really. I just happened to get stopped by Snape."
"Okay, then why are you blushing?" Angelina inquired.
"I was running down the corridor, when Snape stopped me... nothing out of the ordinary really, just took away a few points and let me go home... long story short, I was stopped by Marcus and Adrian, they stole my wand, Wood came along, we got away, and then..."
"And then what?" Alicia questioned.
"And then he started getting weird."
"Explain!" the girls chimed.
"Well... he asked me if I fancied one of the twins, and then he didn't tell me why he asked, or at least not truthfully. Then I was a bit freaked out and started walking away but he tried to follow me! So I talked him off and now I'm here, telling this all to you."
"He asked you if you fancied a twin?" Angelina asked suspiciously.
"Yes."
"Do you fancy a twin?" Angelina inquired.
"No!"
"And he didn't say why he asked?" Angelina continued.
"He said that he had to know if there was anything going on between his players! I don't know about you two, but that doesn't seem like an honest answer to me!" Carina stated.
"I'd say he might fancy you!" Alicia shrieked.
