Chapter Two
~Emi's POV~
I found myself in an interrogation room handcuffed to a table. The cuffs were still too tight and had started digging into my skin. The graze on my arm, I'd received while running through the storm of bullets to get to Chet, started to burn. It had been a few hours and I'd just been left to stew. I'd seen enough law and order shows to know it was a strategic play to get me to break down and tell them everything. If they could guarantee Ben's safety I'd tell them everything I knew.
Just as I was starting to lose feeling in my fingers, the officer who'd been giving orders during the raid on the warehouse stepped into the room. He had short well kempt dark hair and dark eyes. He offered me a warm smile. "Emi, right?"
"Yes, sir." I bowed my head respectfully.
"You can call me Detective Tsukauchi. I just had a nice long chat with your friend Chet." He took a step toward me. As he drew nearer, he reached for my handcuffs. I tensed, unsure of what to expect. He unlocked them and let them drop to the table.
I looked up at him in awe as I unconsciously rubbed my raw wrists. They'd started to bleed near where the clasp of the cuffs had been. "I don't understand." My voice was barely more than a whisper.
"Chet informed me that you were working with them against your will, they were threatening your brother and said they'd kill him if you went to the police or refused them." He leaned against the table and watched me carefully. I had a feeling he was activating his quirk and wasn't sure what kind of quirk he had.
"...yes..."
His smile stayed in place, warm and reassuring. "You still broke the law, but I've talked it over with the District Attorney and shared your circumstances. They've agreed to keep you out of jail, instead you'll be on probation along with..." he paused, "let's call it court ordered community service so long as you cooperate." He chuckled.
What exactly did that mean?
He must have noticed the confusion on my face and smiled again, "you'll be assigned to a probation officer of sorts. You'll have to wear a house arrest ankle bracelet, so we can keep tabs on you, until we've established your trustworthiness."
I nodded absently, my mind drawing a blank. I had no idea what was happening. I wasn't going to jail? That didn't seem right. I'd been a drug mule. That was super illegal.
"Questions?"
I blinked still not sure what was happening was real. "Um..." I faltered; I didn't even know where to start. "Beni?"
"Safely in police custody." Detective Tsukauchi smiled.
"May I-..." I cut off and bit my lip, I wanted to see him but I didn't want to press my luck, it was already a miracle I wasn't going to jail.
"I'll let you see him after you meet your probation officer." He said it somewhat strangely making me feel like this wasn't something they'd ever done before and they didn't actually have a title for whatever it was they were doing.
I nodded.
"Come in." Detective Tsukauchi turned to the door.
It swung open and I felt my heart stutter in my chest as one of the most popular and well-known heroes of all time, All Might, stepped into the interrogation room. His bright blue eyes swept over me before he turned to Detective Tsukauchi curiously.
"Problem solved." Detective Tsukauchi smiled, "you said you needed a personal assistant and a housekeeper. Two for one special, all you have to do is keep an eye on her." So, the court ordered community service he was talking about was acting as a maid and secretary for All Might? This definitely seemed sketchy but was way better than jail.
I pinched myself on the arm to make sure I wasn't sleeping. Nope. It hurt.
"Wait a second, Tsukauchi-." All Might began to protest.
"At least until you can hire someone, your increasing popularity is turning you into a very busy man, you need help. Here's your help. She's a good kid, she was just caught in a bad situation. So, do you accept or would you rather us send her to jail?" Detective Tsukauchi laid on a thick guilt trip. It was a low blow but it seemed like he was in my corner so I stayed quiet and rooted for him silently.
"Well, when you put it like that, how can I say no?" All Might sighed.
Detective Tsukauchi chuckled and called someone else in to fit me for an ankle bracelet with a special GPS tracking device inside. Once it was in place, Detective Tsukauchi led me to a different interrogation room. He opened the door and I spotted Beni sitting at the table. He was battered and bruised, it looked like his nose had been broken. He'd lost a lot of weight since I'd seen him last.
Tears welled in my eyes as I took in his pitiful appearance but my heart leapt for joy. He was alive! "Ben!" I cried and ran to hug him. His hair the same dark ashen brown as my own was much longer than when I'd last seen him.
"Em?!" He croaked as he awkwardly struggled to hug me with his hands being held in handcuffs. "I'm so sorry, Em. I didn't mean to get you caught up in my mess."
"I'm just happy you're alive!" I sobbed as I clung to him tightly.
"I'm sorry for making you worry so much." Beni offered me a smile. "Hey, come on, don't cry, everything's going to be okay."
Detective Tsukauchi cleared his throat from the doorway and I realized our time was up. "Don't worry, Emi, he'll be separated from the others in a minimum-security prison not far from here, they have visiting hours every weekend and you'll be allowed to see him."
I wiped away my tears as I pulled away from my older brother. "Stay out of trouble so I can visit you." I sniffled.
Beni's smile faltered and a look of guilt crossed his face, "I'm the worst big brother."
"No, you're not." I choked.
Beni smiled, but it was somewhat strained, "get going, Em. I'll see you soon."
I bit my lip trying to keep from breaking down into uncontrollable sobs. Beni was alive! But we weren't home free yet. I was somehow being forced into court ordered house arrest with a hero babysitter and Beni was off to jail.
"Hey, little sister." Beni called to me as I shuffled toward the door. I turned to him and he put on one of his carefree smiles, "stay strong, we'll get through this. We can get through anything as long as we have each other, right?"
"R-right." I sniffled before following Detective Tsukauchi out of the interrogation room.
He led me to the front of the police station where All Might was waiting. "Alright, she's all yours, I'll let you know when we need her for court dates or any statements and I'll check in from time to time. Let me know if you need anything." He looked from me to All Might with a smile before handing me a police issued cell phone. "Since yours was taken in for evidence, you can use this one."
I nodded and accepted the phone. I followed All Might out of the police station. We walked in silence. It was clear we were both uncomfortable with the situation and neither of us really knew what to say.
After a horribly awkward journey, we arrived at his home. He lived in a large penthouse style apartment in one of the tallest skyrise buildings in the city. As he was about to open the door he paused and looked a little anxious. That probably wasn't a good sign.
"Ah, excuse the mess, I've been really busy and I haven't had the time to clean or hire proper help." He cleared his throat and waited for me to acknowledge him before opening the door.
The door opened into a massive apartment with an open floorplan. There were takeout boxes EVERYWHERE. It looked worse than a frat party. It was like a frat party, Coachella and Armageddon got together, opened up Pandora's Box and this was the result. My slate grey eyes grew wide as I stared in awe at the disastrous state of what I was sure was a lovely penthouse apartment.
"It's a problem for another day." He laughed nervously as he looked to my aghast face.
I blinked at him in pure horrific wonder. "...h-how did it get so bad?"
His nervous laughter only got louder and more awkward as he scratched the back of his head, "ah, well one thing led to another and it got out of hand."
"Out of hand? It might be easier just to condemn the place." I frowned.
He chuckled. "We'll worry about it another day."
I don't know how he wasn't worried about it constantly. I felt like I needed a canoe just to get through the sea of takeout boxes. He led me through the horrible disorderly main open room with a kitchen, dining area and giant sitting room with a fireplace to a small hallway that appeared to lead to the guest bedroom, master suite, a spare bathroom, an office and a home gym.
"You'll be staying here for now." He led me to the guest bedroom that was surprisingly hotel clean. I had a feeling he didn't often have guests. "Tsukauchi told me he'd send a deputy over in the morning with your things after they check your place for evidence..."
I nodded.
"Do you need anything in the meantime?" He asked unsure.
I shook my head.
"Alright." His gaze drifted to my arm where the bullet had grazed me before flitting down to my raw and bloody wrists from where the handcuffs had chafed me. "Ah...we should probably get you patched u-."
"It's fine." I said quietly.
He looked a little reluctant to accept my refusal of medical treatment but nodded. "Alright. My room is across the hall if you need anything. Goodnight, Emi."
"Goodnight." I replied softly.
Once I heard him retreat to his room, I turned to the comfy looking bed. I wasn't tired. I had a feeling I wouldn't be able to sleep even if I tried. After a few minutes, I held my breath and strained to hear. It sounded like All Might had fallen asleep.
Quietly I crept from my room and waded through the sea of takeout boxes to the kitchen. If I didn't do something to quiet my racing thoughts, I'd never be able to sleep. Ben was still in danger. What if the people he worked for sent people after him in jail? I wanted this whole mess to be over and done with. I wanted things to go back to how they were when I was in high school. It used to just be me and my big brother and it seemed like we didn't have a care in the world. We'd been so happy.
I found some trash bags under the sink and set to work picking up and breaking down takeout boxes as quietly as I could. After nearly an hour of picking up takeout boxes, I uncovered the floor and all the surfaces. It only took about ten trash bags which I neatly piled near the door for fear if I went off in search of a place to dispose of the trash, I'd set off some kind of alarm. Once all the trash was picked up, I started scrubbing the counter tops, stove and sink. I didn't want to do any kind of cleaning that would be noisy so sweeping and vacuuming were out.
It was nearly six in the morning when I finally checked the clock. I was starting to feel a little tired. Despite my protests at medical treatment earlier, I washed my wounds in the sink and realized they could use some attention. Luckily there was a first aid kit under the kitchen sink. I hurriedly bandaged myself up and was about to head to my room when I spotted a stain on the carpet in the sitting room, it looked like it was from old pizza.
Sighing I returned to the kitchen to see if I could find some kind of stain remover or carpet cleaner to use on it. Who knew how long it had been soaking into the carpet? There was a bottle of carpet cleaner under the sink which seemed to be the go-to place for odds and ends. A yawn escaped me as I quietly scrubbed the carpet. Perhaps this wasn't' such a bad deal. All Might seemed like a nice guy, I'd be able to visit Ben on the weekends and I wasn't in jail. It seemed like a win.
