Chapter Thirteen
~Emi's POV~
Toshinori was taking me with him to a big hero convention being hosted at some island resort. Many of the top heroes were being honored, there was a big press conference and other activities planned for the top heroes. Nighteye had made all the arrangements for me and even packed me a bag saying something about me not having suitable clothes.
The suitcase Nighteye had packed for me, looked expensive. I was worried the clothes inside were also expensive. I was going to feel so out of place at this event, no matter what kind of fancy attire Nighteye had found for me. I knew I didn't belong here, with the elite. I was from the slums; I didn't belong at such a nice place.
All Might looked over at me worriedly as we stepped through the lobby of our fancy hotel. The lobby could fit my family home inside of it, not once, or twice but at least four times. It was huge! Why did they need so much space?
"Emi, are you okay?" All Might asked me softly as I stared around at all the fancy lighting fixtures in awe. The giant chandelier in the lobby was bigger than All Might and probably cost more than my entire house.
"I don't feel like I belong here." I squeaked nervously. I'd been left to my own devices for the traveling attire and wore one of my floral dresses. It wasn't a fancy dress; it was pretty casual and I was sure I stood out like a sore thumb in my thrift store flower dress and thrift store strappy sandals.
"Don't worry so much, I think you do. You look nice...well you always look nice...but you look extra nice today." He smiled down at me as his cheeks turned a little pink.
"That's unacceptable, I don't want my room anywhere near that bungling obnoxious bastard!" A booming voice sounded from the front desk and I let out an involuntary squeak of terror and nearly tripped.
All Might caught me with ease and righted me. "You alright?" He looked even more worried than before.
Ever since the abduction, I was so much jumpier. I nodded and looked to the front desk to see who was causing such a ruckus. The second ranked hero, Endeavor, a large muscular giant of a man with bright red hair, flaming facial hair and piercing teal eyes was standing in his hero costume glowering down at the trembling clerk behind the desk.
"I-I'm sorry sir, the rooms are all booked because of the conference." The clerk stumbled over himself.
"Endeavor, long time no see!" All Might greeted him with a jovial smile, giving the poor trembling clerk a break.
Endeavor turned to face us, his eyes narrowing into a menacing glare. My body moved on autopilot as another squeak of terror escaped me and I cowardly fled and hid behind All Might. "All Might." His voice came out in a growl.
"It's been awhile." All Might continued in his jovial tone. I wasn't sure if he was oblivious to the fact that it appeared Endeavor despised him or if he knew that and was intentionally talking to him to annoy him. "I'd like to introduce you to my assistant, Em-...huh? Where did she g-?" He turned and spotted me cowering behind him, "ah, how did you get back there?"
Endeavor turned back around swiped his room key from the desk clerk and walked away in a huff. All Might turned back around to introduce me but he'd already stepped into the elevator and shot one last glare in our direction before the doors whooshed shut with a loud high pitched 'ding'.
"...I don't think he likes you very much..." I murmured softly.
"Hm? Why do you think that?" He asked me earnestly.
I blanched at this; he had no idea! "Ah...we can talk about it later..." I scrambled to open the scheduling app on my phone to get our reservation number so I could see if our rooms were ready. When I made the booking, I booked him a nicer room and booked me the cheapest room they had. There were going to be some events I wasn't allowed to partake in so I assumed I'd be confined to my room since I wouldn't have any supervision and made sure to bring few books with me to read.
All Might took the phone from my hands and greeted the front desk clerk with one of his blinding smiles, "Good Afternoon young-," he paused to read the clerk's name tag, "front desk clerk." The boy didn't have a name on his nametag. Both the clerk and I choked on a laugh. "We have a reservation..." He paused as he glanced down at the phone again before looking to me, "we have two?"
"Um... I didn't want to be in the way or possibly start any bad rumors..." I replied quietly so only he could hear.
He chuckled, "were those the only reasons?"
I nodded.
"Alright." He returned to the clerk with his winning smile and listed the reservations. Once the clerk located them and repeated the rooms to him, All Might politely waited for him to finish listing the rooms and their amenities before replying, "we only need the one."
"Ah...All Might, what are you doing?" I squeaked.
"You're not going to be in the way, I don't care about rumors and I'll feel better if you are with me." He replied simply.
"...but it only has one bed..." I blushed.
The clerk looked between the two of us curiously not quite able to hear our conversation but noting my blushing face. He offered me a warm smile and I thought I saw him mouth 'you go girl' which I had no idea how to interpret and was worried he was getting the wrong idea.
"I'm okay with sharing if you are and if not, I'm also okay with sleeping on the floor or the sofa." All Might smiled.
My face turned a brighter shade of red and I averted my gaze not able to look at All Might or the clerk who still appeared to be cheering me on, "...w-we can share if you're sure it's okay..."
He gently gave me a pat on the head. "Good." He got our room keys and the clerk waved us away with a bright smile seeming to be much happier dealing with us than Endeavor, earlier.
All Might carried our bags with one hand and kept his other at the small of my back to escort me to our room. I could feel the warmth of his hand seeping through the material of my floral dress. We stepped onto the elevator and found an attendant waiting inside. He greeted us with a warm smile.
"What floor?" He asked us politely.
There were really hotels with people in the elevator to push buttons for guests? I thought that was just something they had in the movies! Feeling a bit of a culture shock, I stared in awe at the attendant. All Might looked down at the keys in his hand before replying. "Eight please."
The attendant obliged with a smile and pressed the button. On the way up the attendant told us the location of various amenities, the pools, tennis courts, spa, stables, rose garden, resort bars, restaurants, coffee bars and gift shops. I nearly fainted when he said there was a stable and tried to think of how to ask All Might if I could visit the stables.
"Enjoy your stay." The attendant bowed his head politely to us as we reached our floor.
"Thank you." We replied simultaneously.
Keeping one hand at the small of my back, All Might led me to our room. I didn't have to ask which room was ours as there was a red white and blue balloon arch outside of one of the doors at the end of the hall with what looked like two golden horns at the top resembling his two strands of hair that always seemed to stand upright. Across from the hall was another balloon arch with navy blue and orange balloons which I had a feeling were supposed to represent Endeavor. He'd been complaining about having a room across from All Might.
"This must be it." He chuckled as he spotted the balloon arch.
We got closer and I noticed there was a cute sign on the door saying 'Welcome All Might!'. It appeared there had been a similar sign on Endeavor's door that had gotten ripped down rather aggressively as there were still a few torn edges of paper stuck to tape on the door. All Might handed me one of the room keys and I hesitantly opened the door. The inside of our suite was also decorated with red white and blue streamers. There was a giant gift basket sitting on the rather large table in the corner next to the doors that opened onto the balcony. The room had an amazing view of the white sandy beach, and crystal-clear ocean waters. There were flower petals on the bed and the towels were arranged in a cute rabbit shape at the foot of the bed.
"They went all out." I noted with a smile as I admired all the decorations. It must have taken someone a lot of time to set everything up perfectly.
All Might set our luggage down atop the two large dressers and looked around the room, though he didn't seem as surprised or mesmerized by the decorations as I did. He was probably used to this kind of treatment. He offered me a smile, "I don't think there's any hero stuff going on tonight, is there anything you'd like to do?"
"Let me double check the schedule." I searched for my phone before remembering he'd taken it, "um...it's on my phone..."
All Might patted his pockets before realizing he'd accidentally pocketed my phone. He blushed, "oops, sorry about that." He handed me my phone. "I was hoping to give you a little bit of vacation time so you could relax and not have to work while we're here."
"Huh? You don't have to do that. I like working for you." I smiled as I opened the schedule on my phone. "Looks like there's a cocktail party in the main lounge for all the conference guests starting at nine."
"We have plenty of time to do something else before we have to get ready." He noted with a smile.
"We?" I paled, was I supposed to go too?
"Did you not want to go?" He asked worried.
"N-no, I just didn't think I was allowed to go." I answered shyly.
"Of course, you are, you're my guest." He smiled. "Alright, now that that's settled, what's our plan?"
I felt my cheeks begin to redden. "Could we maybe visit the horses at the stable?"
"Sure." He smiled as he pocketed one of the room keys and offered me his hand.
I was glad my dress had pockets and put my phone in my pocket before accepting his hand. We exited the room and I blushed as I realized he was still holding my hand as we headed back to the elevator.
"U-um, All Might y-you're still holding my hand." I squeaked as we were about to reach the elevator.
He glanced down at our interlocked hands his face starting to redden, "is that okay?"
"I don't want to make you look bad." I blushed.
"No chance of that happening." He beamed and gave my hand a squeeze before pressing the button to summon the elevator with his free hand.
The elevator doors whooshed open with a 'ding' and the attendant we'd left not too long ago greeted us with another smile. "What floor?"
"Ground floor please." All Might replied.
"Was the room to your liking?" The attendant asked politely.
All Might smiled, "it's perfect, and the decorations were a nice touch."
The attendant looked pleased and I had a feeling he'd helped with the decorations. "Glad to hear it."
We waved farewell to him as we stepped off the elevator. There were a few other heroes in the lobby waiting in line at the front desk to check in. I didn't think any of them were high ranked heroes as they only watched us from a distance and whispered amongst themselves but seemed too afraid or nervous to call out or approach All Might as if they feared they'd make fools of themselves. They were all acting like nervous fanboys. It reminded me of how Ben got around heroes he admired.
All Might didn't release my hand and waved politely in greeting to the other heroes causing a few of them to gush. I noticed most of them taking note of our interlocked hands and starting to focus on me. I attempted to hide behind All Might, but wasn't very successful.
We exited out one of the side doors into a huge botanical garden. I hadn't realized my pace had slowed until I felt a slight tug on my hand as I stared in a daze at all the pretty blossoms. All Might turned to me as he realized I was distracted. He smiled and slowed his pace so I could look at all the pretty blooms as we made our way toward the stable.
We soon found ourselves at a giant barn with stone molding around the lower half of the building, the upper portion extending to the roof was pristine white paneling. There were giant sliding doors leading to the stable that were currently opened all the way. Inside was a giant arena and dozens of stalls with horses. As we stepped into the stable all the horses poked their heads out of their stalls.
One of the stable hands noticed us and approached us with a warm smile and a polite bow, "good afternoon, how can I help you?"
I realized I had zero plan when suggesting the stable, I'd just wanted to see a horse up close. They were so pretty, I used to love horses when I was a child. Ben would pretend to be one and let me ride around the house on his back when we were kids, it had always been so much fun, but I'd longed to see a real horse, just once. All Might looked down to me and I realized he was leaving it up to me.
"U-um...are we allowed to pet them?" I asked nervously.
The stable hand chuckled, "absolutely, they're all friendly, feel free to introduce yourself to them, I'll get you some treats so you can feed them if you like."
I was allowed to feed them too! I tried to contain my excitement, "o-okay...thank you."
The man smiled and went to find the treats.
All Might chuckled softly.
"Why are you laughing?" I blushed as we made our way to the closest stall.
"I'm not." All Might tried, and failed, to hide his laughter.
"Y-you are too." I pouted.
"You're incredibly cute." He said a little bashfully and I felt my face burn with heat and quickly looked away from him.
The first horse was majestic, and made me think it might be a unicorn in disguise. Its coat was a bright glistening white and it had bright blue eyes. Slowly I extended my hand toward it so it could sniff me first and decide if it would let me pet it. The horse sniffed my hand before pressing its nose softly against it. It was so soft!
I jumped at the sudden contact and lightly rubbed its soft nose, "it feels kind of like velvet." I smiled.
All Might smiled and released my hand so I could get maximum pets. The horse tossed its head back a little before gently nuzzling my cheek with its soft nose causing me to let out a soft giggle. The stable hand returned and offered me a small treat in cube form.
"Just make sure you keep your hand flat and let it sit on your palm." The stable hand coached me as I took the treat.
I did as he said and offered the horse the treat and couldn't help but laugh as its lips tickled my hand as it took the treat somewhat clumsily from me. The stable hand smiled and left us a bag of treats before leaving us alone. I felt a little silly as I realized this probably seemed really childish to All Might.
I glanced up at him and felt my heart skip a beat in my chest as I realized he was watching me with a smile on his lips. "We don't have to meet them all, I think I got my fix." I blushed.
"Really? I was looking forward to meeting them all." His bright blue eyes twinkled with amusement but I could tell he was being somewhat serious.
"Are you sure?" I asked him nervously.
"Of course, I want you to have fun on this trip and this seems like something you really enjoy." He tenderly pat me on the head, "so take your time, I'm enjoying myself quite a bit just seeing how happy it makes you."
A smile lit up my face and I threw my arms around him, "thank you, To- All Might." I quickly corrected myself, I'd almost said his name.
He chuckled softly, "I think we're alone enough."
We spent the majority of the afternoon at the stable meeting all the horses and giving them treats and lots of pets. The horses seemed happy to see us and were especially happy to see the bag of treats the stable hand had given us. After getting to pet each and every one of the horses and give them all a treat, it was time to head back to the room to get ready for the cocktail party. I was a little worried as I still had no idea what outfits Nighteye had gotten me.
All Might caught my hand in his as we left the stable. It felt comfortable and natural for my hand to be in his and I felt more at ease. A small smile twisted onto my lips as I squeezed his hand. We made it back to the lobby, it appeared there were a few early arrivals already dressed in their cocktail party attire waiting for the finishing touches to be done at the lounge so they could enter.
We made it up to our room without issue. All Might offered the bathroom up to me to get ready in as it had plenty of mirrors and counter space. I accepted, still unsure of what Nighteye had packed for me and tried to lug my suitcase into the bathroom. Noticing me struggle, All Might came to my rescue and picked it up easily with one hand and brought it into the bathroom for me.
Once he was gone, I unzipped the suitcase. There were some clear jewelry totes with various pieces of pretty costume jewelry. I set them aside and found a few pairs of very nice looking shoes, some fancy sandals, heels and a pair of sneakers. There were a couple of outfits and they all looked expensive. My gaze fell on a pretty whisper pink chiffon cocktail dress. There was another super fancy looking evening gown that I immediately hung up. Why on earth did I need that? Aside from the way too expensive outfits, shoes and costume jewelry there were a few small makeup bags with various products I knew nothing about as well as standard toiletries. I changed out of my now very cheap looking floral dress and stepped into the whisper pink cocktail dress. It was strapless, which I wasn't sure I liked and it wasn't long enough for my liking. I put on the heels and struggled to find a way to style my hair. After a few attempts I gave up and settled on a braid, it somehow looked fancier than I had intended. I found the jewelry in the bags I assumed was supposed to go with this dress and applied some mascara and some stain to my lips.
I checked my reflection in the mirror afraid I'd see someone else. I saw myself, playing princess. Everything looked beautiful but I still felt out of place and like I didn't belong. Pushing back those feelings, I put everything back in the bag save for the evening gown and exited the bathroom. I hung the gown in the closet area and was about to try and lug the suitcase back out of the bathroom but jumped as a strong arm sidled around my waist, gently moving me aside. All Might chuckled and picked up my suitcase once more.
He was wearing a light grey suit that had a whisper pink pocket square and I wondered if Nighteye had also packed his bags and coordinated our outfits. I was used to seeing him in his hero costume or workout gear, it was rare to see him this dressed up and I had to admit he looked quite handsome.
"You look nice." We blurted simultaneously before blushing.
"Shall we?" He offered me his arm.
My heart skipped a beat as I placed my hand atop his arm and he expertly pulled me a little closer and folded my arm into his to escort me like a perfect gentleman. Heat spread across my face. If any of my old neighbors could see me now, they'd tell me I'd walked into a fairytale. A small smile graced my stained lips at this thought, at times it did feel like I'd walked into a fairytale. All Might was like a knight in shining armor and acted very princely and noble. He was kind of like my very own Prince Charming. The thought made my face redden a little more.
I felt nervous as we made our way toward the door. Despite this fairytale setting, I still knew I wasn't part of this world, I didn't belong in it. I had to do my best not to embarrass him or cause him any trouble. I took a deep breath to steady my nerves as we moved toward the door. Silently I wished the night would go smoothly.
