Emi- Age 21

~Emi's POV~

I glanced down at my phone as it buzzed in my hand. A text from an unlisted number flashed across the screen. I need you for a delivery. My stomach churned unpleasantly, my palms grew sweaty and my heart started to race. I'd just pulled my phone out of my pocket to check the time and now I was filled with dread and had started to perspire. I tucked my phone in my pocket, and took off my apron before waving for someone to take my place to serve food to the hungry.

"Everything alright, Emi?" The youth pastor who ran the whole soup kitchen asked me worriedly, "you don't look so good."

"Sorry, I don't know what came over me all of a sudden, I think I'm going to go home." I bowed apologetically.

"No need to apologize, you're a volunteer and we have plenty of help today, go get some rest." He offered me a warm smile. He was a nice man and he didn't push the religious stuff on me like most people in his profession tended to do.

I bowed once more as guilt knotted my stomach and took my leave. The frigid winter air chilled me to the bone. Despite the cold, I was still sweating as I headed for my car. Sliding into the driver's seat I glanced at the photo pinned to my visor. It was a photo of me and my older brother during my spring break of my final year of high school. Though it was only three years ago, it felt like a lifetime ago. I stared at their smiling faces for a long moment wishing I could turn back time. My older brother Beni, though I just called him Ben, was grinning from ear to ear his cheeks were dimpled and the left cheek was sporting a bright red handprint and his eyes, the same slate grey as mine were bright with laughter. One of the local surfers had offered to take him out to catch his first wave, he wiped out, horribly, and had to be fished out by the other local surfers. I'd slapped him in the face for the heart attack he'd given me just before the picture was taken. Ben always laughed everything off, it was one of the things I loved most about him, he was always carefree...or at least he had been.

It was only a few months after that day that Ben had fallen in with the wrong sort, he started being a drug mule for extra cash. I had no idea until about three months ago when he was mugged and beaten half to death. The men he worked for were holding him captive and forcing me to be a mule for their drugs. They threatened to kill Ben if I didn't and told me I just had to make the deliveries until I had done enough to cover the amount of money Ben had lost in product when he'd gotten mugged. They told me if I went to the police, they'd kill Ben.

I kissed the tip of my index finger before lightly touching it to Ben's red cheek in the photo. "Look at the mess we're in, Ben." I sighed as I started the car and took off to the warehouse, I picked up all my deliveries from.

It was a warehouse on the outskirts of town tucked in a patch of forest out of sight from any road. The small side road that led to it was hard to find unless you knew where it was. There was a car on the road when I made my first pass and I had to turn around at a gas station down the road to make a second pass. Once I was sure the coast was clear, I turned down the hidden side road and killed my car lights. My heart was still racing erratically in my chest. Though I was now, sadly, used to this routine, it never got easier, I was never not terrified of losing Ben, getting caught, getting mugged or being killed by the vile men who were holding my brother prisoner.

As I came to a stop outside the dingy looking warehouse, I saw something move in the trees off to the side. I turned off my car, took one last look at the picture of me and Ben at the beach missing the peaceful life we used to have. My palms were sweating so much as I got out of the car, I dropped my keys. Before I could stoop down to pick them up, I saw something rush out of the tree line and scurry toward me.

A boy of about nine with unruly auburn hair, tawny eyes and a spattering of freckles across his face raced toward me and scooped up my keys. He handed them to me with a grin.

"Chet, what are you doing here?" I gasped as I leaned down so I was at eye level with him. "Why didn't you go see that pastor I told you about?" I asked worried. Chet was recently orphaned, his parents had been homeless, he'd started hanging around and I tried to look out for him as best I could. I told him about the youth pastor and where to find him knowing the kind man would be the right person to get him the help he needed.

"I did, he's really nice and they're letting me stay at the church, but I wanted to see you." He was all smiles.

"It's not safe here." I groaned, "the men here aren't very nice. Please, promise me you won't come here again."

His smile faltered, "are you mad at me, Em?"

"No, I'm not mad...I'm just worried about you, I don't want anything to happen to you." I said softly as I ruffled his unruly hair. "Why don't you hide in the back seat." I pointed to my car, "I have to run an errand but after I'm done, I'll take you for a burger and we can go back to the church together. Sound like a plan?"

Chet's smile returned and he wrapped his thin arms around me. "You're the best, Em." He scrambled into my car and hid himself in the backseat.

I let out a sigh and slowly made my way toward the warehouse. As I reached the door I knocked.

        One knock.

        Pause.

        Three knocks.

        Pause.

The door swung open and a tall terrifying man with a bubbled-up scar over his missing left eye greeted me with a one-eyed scowl. I trembled slightly as he fixed me with a stern look. He gave me a once over before stepping to the side letting me through. The warehouse was mostly empty. There were a few crates here and there mostly used as surfaces. There were a few guys standing around chatting near some of the crates. They looked over with interest as I walked toward the back office. One of them let out a low whistle and I quickened my pace causing them all to howl with laughter.

As I reached the back office, I knocked on the door and held my breath.

"Come in." A cold voice that sent a chill down my spine sounded from within the room.

I hesitantly pushed the door open. There was a tall muscular man with a tattooed scalp standing next to the door just inside the room. He had a gun tucked into his waistband and another secured to his ankle tucked inside his boot.

Sitting at a desk in the center of the small office was a man with greasy black hair, slightly greenish tinged skin and gaunt dark eyes. His name was Shigo and he was in charge of this warehouse. I had a feeling he was just an underling for a bigger boss and he was scary enough on his own. There was something almost reptilian about him that had always freaked me out. He smiled as I shakily stepped into the room.

"You know what I like about you, little Emi?" He sneered as his goon closed the door behind me.

        "No, what?" I squeaked.

"You're always so punctual." He smiled as he leafed through some packages filled with questionable substances all tightly wrapped up in tape. He put a few of them into a black bag that looked like a simple laptop case. "The address is in the front pocket. Text me when you're done." He tossed the bag at me and I nearly dropped it as my palms were sweating so much. I managed to catch it and steady myself. He looked away from me resuming whatever he was doing before I'd stepped in.

I paused.

"Yes?" Shigo's voice was dripping with irritation.

"...I wanted to know how Ben is doing..."

"He'd be doing a lot better if his little sister would ask less questions and keep being punctual." His dark eyes narrowed.

I bowed my head. "...sorry..." I turned to exit the room.

Raised voices and shouting sounded from the main room of the warehouse, giving me pause. A gun fired and I instinctively squealed and dropped to the floor throwing my arms over my head.

"Go see what that's about." Shigo growled at his bodyguard.

More gunshots fired as the door opened. I could faintly hear the raised voices getting louder. There was a lot of shouting over the crossfire. A stone spike shot through the window of the office and impaled the wall behind Shigo. Someone had activated their quirk, it sounded like a warzone out there.

"POLICE!" One of Shigo's grunts yelled.

"HEROES!" Another yelled.

"EMI?!" Chet's voice screamed in a panic and my heart plummeted.

"Chet!" I picked myself up off the floor leaving the bag on the ground and darted out the door.

"Why is there a kid here?!" Someone yelled over the rain of bullets and crazy quirks going off left and right.

"Chet!" My heart pounded in my chest as I sprinted through the now hazy warehouse, someone had a quirk that acted like a smokescreen.

I spotted Chet trying to fight his way free from an overweight police officer. "Let go!" Chet was crying and trying to break free. He looked terrified.

I watched in horror as the police officer trying to pull him to safety took a bullet to the chest. Without thinking, I dove toward the pair as the police officer fell to the ground taking Chet down with him. A bullet grazed my arm as I desperately tried to get to Chet and the police officer.

"Emi!" Chet cried and barreled into me as I landed not so gracefully beside them.

I wrapped my arms around him and held my hands up crossed behind Chet's back as I activated my quirk. A glowing gold barrier of light surrounded us. "Shh. It's okay. I won't let anyone hurt you." I was on the verge of hyperventilating but managed to sound reassuring as I hugged him tight shielding him from harm.

There was a loud thunderous roar outside the shield as one of the goons with a rock quirk launched a multitude of rocks at the police. I felt them batter against my shield and bounce off. Chet clung to me and buried his face in my chest.

"I'm sorry! I should have stayed in the car!" He cried.

"It's okay. I'll keep you safe." I promised him as I concentrated on keeping my shield up.

"TEXAS SMASH!" There was a massive explosion of force that shook the very foundation. It took all I had to keep my shield from shattering.

Everything was quiet for a moment. After a few more moments I felt someone tap on my shield. I glanced up peering between my sheets of dark ashen brown hair. There were a plethora of police officers and a few heroes standing in a circle around my shield. The officers had their guns drawn. My eyes grew wide as I spotted a very well-known hero with glistening gold hair and bright blue eyes, All Might.

"Drop the shield." One of the officers ordered me.

I pulled away from Chet and raised my hands into the air. My shield dropped and I stayed frozen in place as one of the officers approached me with handcuffs while a few others went to check on their wounded comrade's condition.

"Were you with them?" He indicated a few dead goons.

I winced. Technically I was with them regardless if it was against my will or not. I bit my lip and bowed my head before giving him a nod in response.

"Take her in." The officer in charge ordered.

"No!" Chet wailed as the officer with the handcuffs roughly grabbed me by the arm and forcefully pinned my hands behind my back despite me surrendering peacefully.

"Not so rough." The police officer who'd given the order reprimanded the man but his grip didn't ease.

"Let her go!" Chet cried and ran at the officer as he wrenched me to my feet. "Stop it! Emi's not bad!"

"Chet. Stop. It's okay." I tried to reassure the distraught boy as the officer who'd handcuffed me way too tightly dragged me to a squad car. The last thing I saw before being dragged away was Chet running toward the police officer who appeared to be in charge.
