Chapter Two
I sat on the couch watching television. Mom said she was going to go talk to the principal today about my missing classes. She left a couple minutes ago, so I was bored. Maggie was sleeping in her bed, Jonah was outside swinging on the swing set, and Carmen was up at the hospital yet again.
Trenton had offered to take her up which was a huge relief to our family. Carmen was a little fidgety about it but went up with him anyways. Trenton and I have bonded a little more since that talk we had on Saturday morning. Sure it's only been two days since that talk but we've talked a lot more. And I got his number as well so when he's up with Carmen or out and about he can talk to me still.
I sighed and flipped through channels trying to find something interesting to watch. Then I flipped to a channel that was playing The Hunger Games. I set the remote down and began to watch the movie until..
"Ow! Owen help me!" I heard Jonah yelling from out back. I got up quickly and ran out the back door to see Jonah army crawling over to the patio. I walked over and picked him up, carrying him over to the bench on the patio. I set him down and examined him. He had hurt his knee pretty bad, bad enough to leave a scar, that much was for sure. There were little pebbles in his knee and he had scraped his elbows. I frantically ran in the house grabbing band aids and pliers. I never learned how to tend and take care of wounds but I thought I could handle it. Then I remembered something that Carmen had told me. How to help with wounds and scrapes.
I took a deep breathe and took a look at his knee. I first had to take care of those pebbles. I grabbed the pliers and Jonah grabbed the side of the bench tightly. I carefully removed the first pebble with the pliers, the slight sound of moving flesh could be heard.
"O-ow! That hurt!" Jonah wailed clenching his teeth and closing his eyes.
"Sorry!" I said sadly as I winced. "Squeeze my hand if it hurts alright?" I said as I went in for another grab.
He quickly grabbed my hand and started squeezing it. Tears streaming down his face. I quickly removed the pebble and Jonah yelped. I quickly got up and ran inside to get a wet wash cloth. I went back outside and gently placed the wet cloth over his wound. Thank goodness he only had one more pebble to grab.
I removed the cloth and used the pliers again to grab the final pebble. Jonah squeezed my hand tightly, his finger nails digging into my own. I patted the wound with the wet cloth then grabbed the biggest size bandage we had and pulled it out. I ran inside grabbing some neosporin and brought it back out. I put some Neosporin on the bandage where the wound would be and placed the bandage on his wound. He hugged his knee tightly. I carried him over to the bench on the patio.
I sat down next to him and looked at him, rubbing his back. His eyes were puffy from crying and he whimpered because of pain every now and then.
It took a couple minutes but soon Jonah had calmed down and his breathing had evened out, making me realize he had fallen asleep due to exhaustion. Being careful to not wake him up, I moved one of my arms under his legs and carried him up to his bedroom. I closed his curtains and turned on his nightlight, knowing it would be dark when I shut the door. I turned on his sound machine, switching it to white noise and quietly exiting the room. I slowly turned the door knob and shut his door, making sure not to wake up Maggie either.
I headed downstairs and walked outside to clean up the scraps and supplies from helping Jonah, and put them back where they were originally. I heard my phone buzz from the couch and looked at the caller ID. It was mom.
I snatched the phone from the couch and hit answer.
"Hello?" I started.
"Hi Owen. So I cleared it with your principal and I'm heading home now. Trenton is on his way back with Carmen. They might get there before me. If they do will you let me know?" I heard mom say from the other side of the phone.
"Yes." I replied simply.
"Okay. Thanks Owen. Love you!" Mom said.
"Love you too. Bye," I removed the phone from my ear and pressed the red, end call, button.
I couldn't wait to see Trenton. I have been talking with Trenton so much more than I talked with my own sister and I couldn't help but feel bad. I decided I would talk to Trenton after they got back and we would plan a little something for Carmen after she comes home from one of her appointments.
I smiled at the thought and sat on the couch, drifting into a small slumber.
