Beginning of the New End

this is for all the readers who believed Teresa deserved better. btw the italics is the quote from the book.

A splintering, shattering noise split the air so loudly that Thomas looked back. His eyes drifted upward, where a massive section of the ceiling had torn loose. He watched, hypnotized, as it fell toward him. Teresa appeared in the corner of his vision, her image barely discernible through the clogged air. Her body slammed into his, embracing him, they both tumbled into the maintenance room.

Thomas heard Teresa yelp in pain. He looked up and saw that a chunk of debris from the ceiling had cut her left leg. Bad. Thomas was sick just looking at it.

Then Teresa looked at him and all the chaos around Thomas stopped. Her crystal blue eyes were filled with unshed tears. Her pink lips were parted over teeth clenched in pain. He could see every freckle on her face and individually count her long and luscious eyelashes.

I'm an idiot, Thomas thought. Teresa had risked her life for him twice now in the same hour. First by jumping into the Griever and now saving him from a chunk of ceiling that surely would've killed him if she hadn't tackled him. With a shiver down his spine he realized that she would have died if she hadn't held onto him. Despite her betrayal, he couldn't bare losing someone so close to him again. Not like Chuck.

Not like Newt.

"I'm sorry," he choked out in a raspy whisper. "I'm so sorry."

"I'm sorry too," she whispered back. "I only ever......cared for.....you."

A booming crash and yell broke Thomas and Teresa out of their bubble.

"LET'S GO SHANKS OR WE'LL DIE!" screamed Minho miraculously over the deafening noises of the building collapsing above them. Thomas maneuvered his way out from under Teresa and hooked her right arm over his shoulder. He picked her up with ease and as quickly as he could he guided her towards the flat trans.

They were almost there when an air vent collapsed from the ceiling right in front of the two. Thomas staggered back with Teresa around him.

"Just GO, Tom," she yelled in his ear. "Leave me here!"

No, Thomas told himself. Absolutely not. He would not let Teresa die when he could have saved her. Not a chance. Even if it meant the both of them might die under this building.

Thomas picked Teresa up in a fireman carry and did his best to run and jump over debris with a 140 pound girl over his shoulder. He felt Teresa's hands clench his charred and filthy shirt as they ran towards paradise.

They were ten meters away.

Minho was waiting by the edge with Brenda screaming and yelling their names.

Seven meters.

Thomas spat a glob of blood to the ground. He choked on the dust and rubble filling his lungs.

Four meters.

Teresa's hands unclenched his shirt. A row of pipes clattered down to his left, clanging and clattering.

Two meters.

Thomas felt Teresa go limp. He jumped over a cement block and almost tripped over a stray pipe.

Zero meters.

Thomas couldn't see behind him but he knew Brenda and Minho were there.

Immediately sunlight flooded his vision and the salty scent of the ocean filled his lungs. Thomas fell to his knees on the grassy hill and carefully placed Teresa down. He frantically searched for a pulse and exhaled when he felt one.

Teresa's eyes fluttered open and Thomas couldn't help but notice that they were the exact shade of the beautiful sky above them.

"Thank you," she coughed.

"No. Thank you," Thomas replied. "Without you I would've died twice." A small smile managed to escape Teresa's chapped lips.

"Probably more," she joked. Her eyes were droopy.

"Yeah," replied Thomas as he stared deep into her eyes. Hesitantly, he reached out a hand to caress her face. "We're safe now," Thomas reassured both himself and the girl lying below him.

"No more WICKED. No more Janson. No more Flare. Just us immunes in a world of chaos," said Teresa. She looked up at Thomas. "I know it might seem like a bad time since we just arrived at paradise but my leg REALLY hurts."

Thomas mentally smacked himself in the head. How could he forget Teresa's severely injured leg?

"Shuck. I'll find you someone right now. Let's go," cursed Thomas. He helped Teresa sit up and he lifted her into a bridal carry as they walked toward the crowd of immunes hoping to find someone who could help.

Thats all for now folks hope you enjoyed. Also if you're feeling up to it, since this is my most recent work you can go check out my other fanfic, Twisted, which I wrote like 3 years ago so if you want a laugh head over there.
