08: A Memory Swipe

Blair almost jumped back when the unexpected knock brought her back to reality. 'Yes.' Her voice came out hoard as she had not talked for so long.

The door clicked and Eliah's pale face appeared. 'Hey,' she said in a sweet, thin voice.

'Hi.' Blair's answer was so low that she doubted if Eliah heard it.

'How's your leg?' Eliah asked.

'You can come in.' Blair said as Eliah kept on standing by the door. 'And it's better.'

Eliah came in with small steps and sat on the couch facing Blair who was currently sitting on the bed. She fiddled with her hands but said nothing. Blair cocked her head to her side, thinking what was making her so uncomfortable. 'You okay?' Blair shouldn't have asked this. She shouldn't' even bothered but somehow, Eliah's face and attitude always clicked. Like she knew her or someone like her.

'They need you downstairs. Don't freak out.'

'Why?' Blair thought about all the possibilities that could make Eliah so uncomfortable.

Eliah shook her head. 'It's some freaky stuff downstairs.' She looked at Blair expectedly. 'You have to come downstairs and go somewhere. If you'll refuse, they'll use the weapons then.'

Blair stared at her pale face. She gritted her teeth and nodded.

'Ah, And there comes the golden piece.' Ace greeted Blair just as she entered the room. Blair gasped as she took in the room.

It was a big room, bigger than her own room which was at least double her house she previously lived in. A table was placed right in the centre and a device was placed on the table. It had a two lenses to look through. And a plate use to place on what seemed like face was set with bunch of wires hanging. It looked so creepy that cold hands gripped Blair's shoulders and neck. A pad was placed on the other end and computer was set. A projector screen was set at the back of the table.

At the far end was a book rack—stacked with books from top to bottom. They were so many that Blair's hands itched to touch them. The other contents were the necessary furniture that was too expensive just by the look.

Ace was walking towards Blair, a strange smile on his face. Adrien stood by the table —his emotions shielded by the coldness but his eyes, dour, they looked at Blair like a snake hissing at its prey. He stood by a black lady in her late forties with fine golden hair dropped over her shoulder , wearing a lab coat.

'How are you feeling now?' Ace directed her a question. Feeling? Did he really ask that? Blair thought. She lived in her room for a whole month where no one was allowed to enter except a nurse who'd come, check her leg, dress it, give her food and some meds, and will leave. She tried talking out to the nurse but she just would not. Blair was exhausted in that room. Those scary walls reminded her of a haunted house. A house where walls spoke and ground whispered.

Her foot was better, great after three weeks of treatment but still, she wasn't allowed to leave. Lonely, she'd sit on the bed, thinking about how things got changed so suddenly. She's think about Kelly, about Adrien who was about to kill her.  Kelly, whether she died or made it. What happened that day? After she blacked out? Who was that man? Why Kelly saved her? So many questions, no one to answer.

She was locked in her room. No coming out.

She didn't reply to Ace who himself didn't care. He grabbed her shoulders and pushed her to walk towards the chair but she didn't move an inch. Ace didn't try again, he simply leant in and whispered ever so slowly in her ear, 'Listen here Goldie, you're gonna do as I say or,' he caressed her arm that sent Blair chills. 'I have this sharp, pointy thing in my pocket that can cut vegetables, fruits, or even humans.'

Blair swallowed. If only she would not be so scared of knives. That all would've been so much better. She began moving with Ace and reluctantly sat on the chair. The lady, who was quiet by now, moved forth and stretched her hand. 'Hello Blair,' she spoke in a silvery voice with a fake smile plastered on her face. 'I'm Dr Donna, and I'll be assisting you for now on.'

'Assisting for what? My foot's fine.' Blair spoke in a rather unmannerly tone.

'I know.' She smiled and sat on the chair across the table. 'Blair do you know why you are here?' She opened a file and half-faced the computer.

'No.' Blair said. 'No one tells me anything.'

'They must've been waiting for a good opportunity.' Her voice was so calm that Blair cringed. Too calm. Too polite. 'Blair, you are exceptionally significant for us and conceivably that is the main rationale we lost Kelly.' Blair looked up at Adrien who didn't give off anything but simply stared back at Blair. His eyes icily cold.

'Why that man wanted to kill me?' Blair spurred out.

'I'm sorry we have not reached the true incentive of that man's trespass but for now, we have to place that occurrence aside.' She looked down on the file again, studied something then looked up at Blair. 'Blair, we need you for something important.'

Blair didn't nod, didn't say anything. She just stared at her feeling the presence of Adrien and Ace now behind her. 'You have a scar on your left eye and we need it.' Just as the doctor spoke, Blair furrowed.

'No.' Blair said sharply. 'There isn't.'

'Yes Blair there is.'

'No,' Blair repeated again. 'There isn't.'

'You can't see it Blair.' Dr. Donna switched on the device that has been placed in front of Blair that gave off a telescope vibe, or those devices that is used to detect the problems in a vision.

'How can there be? How do you know I have one if you can't see?'

'Because your left eye is operated . It acquired a scar and had a Lens Transplant to hide to scar.' Blair stood up from the chair.

'This is bullshit.' She said.

'Blair, calm down.' Dr. Donna said in a calm voice that riled Blair further.

Ace pulled Blair back on the chair. 'Stop it!' Blair tried to get out of his grip but he was much stronger than her.

Meanwhile, Dr. Donna stood up and with a remote, she played something. It was a girl with one blue eye and the other one was of brown. Blair could recognise the mole on the side of the nose, like the one Blair has. The girl was around seven and eight, with grubby, muddied hair falling loose of a ponytail. Her clothes were matted with dirt as if the girl has just rolled in the dirt. But her eyes, they sparkled as she smiled widely at the camera. 'Do you recognise her?' Dr. Donna asked.

'This ... is ... me.' Blair said slowly, taking in, the surroundings, trying to remember when it was captured. Dr. Donna zoomed in the picture and there Blair saw, a gold streak in an inconsistent pattern following till the iris. The line began  from the pupil and ended just before the blue coloured iris.

'And this is your original eye.' Dr. Donna said. 'You have a heterochromia irisdis. A condition that caused coloration between the colour of the eyes. It is usual for eyes but can also cause severance between skin or hair colours.' She looked at Blair to see if she was listening or not. 'This does not cause any  quandary for a vision but is rare. But there is one thing that made you further rare, is the transpiration of a scar which again, cause no problem for you vision.'

'We had researched on you a lot, we've been watching over you for the past five years and there is no hesitancy that you have a Refractive Lens Exchange or Lens Transplant,' she clicked the remote again and a slideshow of a diagram of an eye was showed where there was a quick outlook on the Lens Transplant.

'I don't believe it,' Blair spat. 'You are messing with me. I don't remember any of it and that picture, it could be photoshopped to manipulate me and misguide me or something like that. You need to stop.'

Dr. Donna  let the projector stay on while she placed the remote on the table. She sat on the chair and placing her elbows on it, she leant forth. 'You have all points to argue, doubt and think us as people to misuse you. But Blair, I'd want you to know that we have been researching on you for a good reason. And the other fraction that has been troubling you, about you remembering, is because your memories were removed.'

Blair tore her eyes off her. She wanted to laugh like a maniac at Donna's research and information. Memories swiped? You are kidding me? She thought. That was a good play, and she knew Ace and Adrien won't let her go until that play was over so Blair acted along.

'Okay, that was a good lie. I'll give you on that one.' Blair folded her arms over her chest and leant back.

Dr. Donna sighed but not a frustration sigh, but rather a sigh of tiredness. 'Okay Blair, don't believe me. It's fine. Time will let you surmise my explanation. For now, I'd like to talk to you about your past.'

Blair glared at the device that was placed in front of her thinking when she will use it. 'I'd wanted to take this slow. Let you first imbibe the unanticipated explanation and then escort you further but one month has already been gone to usage and I might say, we are short of time. So Blair, I'd ask you some elementary questions and I'd want you to answer me decently. Are we ready?'

Blair just wanted to run away. She nodded her head ever so slightly desperate for it to end.

'Let's start from your parents.'

It was a good start to grasp Blair's attention. 'What happened to them?'

'You've searched upon me for five years. Why don't you tell me?' Blair hissed.

'I need to acquire answers from your perspective. Please co operate.'

Blair scoffed like a fifteen year old teen being scolded to not to go out. She looked at the door and from the corner of the eye, she noticed that Adrien had left. Only Ace was standing behind her. When will I get out of this room? She didn't what to reply but knew if she won't either Ace will use the weapon or Donna will keep on staring at her creepily. 'They died.' She eventually said.

'How?'

'In a bomb blast.' She answered confidently.

'Do you remember where did it occur?'

'Now what this has to do with my eye?' Blair snapped.

Dr. Donna defensively held up her hands. 'Okay, let's fast forward. What were you doing when you heard the news?'

Blair tried to remember. What was she doing? Watching tv? No, they didn't have one. Playing? But she was never interested in sports. Reading? Or perhaps writing? She did not know. She tried to think about it several times but this part always came out blank. As if there was a whole scenery and someone simply erased a major part of the scenery. But she didn't want her to have the satisfaction that her shitty theory is true. So she lied, 'I was reading a book.'

'Was someone with you?'

'No,' she shook her head. 'I was alone.' She lied again.

'Okay, What happened after wards?'

'What happens? It was funeral of course.' But again, Blair had no memory of it. Whenever she'd try to think about it, only a strange smile of a man with  two crooked teeth  would appear. Who was he? She'd tried to recall but all in vain.

'And do you remember the funeral?' Dr. Donna was staring to grow more intrigued.

'I was in my room crying all day.' Blair lied smoothly with remorse expressions. Dr. Donna looked down at the file but didn't say anything.

'Let's move things quickly. Do you have a sibling?'

Blair glanced at the book rack behind Dr. Donna. She didn't have one. Obviously, she lived alone but somehow, she could not admit it to herself. Like there was something holding her back. Something she must've knew from the start. 'No.' Blair replied again, swiftly.

'Humph,' Dr. Donna stared at Blair. 'You do realise it will be helpful if you reply honestly.'

'I'm aware.'

'Okay, how about their names? Your parents names. What were they? Or you might explain to me their appearance.'

'Lisa and Hans.' Blair responded glad that she saw their parents photo album where their names were etched just a few days ago. 'Mom had blue eyes, dad had blue too. He was rather fat and mom was thin. Dad usually wore sleeveless shirts and mom mostly liked wearing pyjamas. They both had good features, but Dad had a cut on his nose and was bald and mom wore her wedding ring all the time.' A satisfactory smile spread across Blair's face as she explained her parents telling Dr. Donna that she was lying about Blair's memory swipe and lens transplant.

Dr. Donna nodded, a little impressed. 'Okay, so what about your life after the incident? How old were you exactly?'

'Fifteen and my life was fine.' She still didn't remember how she ended up in a good house and gained a good job. She didn't remember her high school graduation, or college life or even university one but she knew she was qualified when she fiddled through the files a day ago with the incident of that police one. It was all the documents that was helping Blair speak about her past without any hesitation but she knew, the truth will come out soon.

'Any graduation party memories?'

'I was not interested in that stuff.' That was not a good answer and gave away Blair a little.

'Why don't you have friends Blair?'

'I... ' her words wandered off. Why didn't she really? She tried to focus on any of a girl that might've been her friend but again, when she'll try to think about it, a faint red mane  of a girl would appear in front of her eyes that maybe, she was her friend.

'And who and how did that man, Mr. Gabriel Manny, who you called your father happen to have you?'

'He adopted me.'

'How? Do you remember when?' Dr. Donna's smile was getting visible.

'No.' Blair said straightforwardly as she just realised, there was many holes in her memory and suddenly, the room began suffocating.

'And do you remember why wouldn't let you meet his family?'

Blair pushed the growing lump down. 'I have no idea.' That always pissed Blair off. Gabriel would come and visit her, but never invited her to his home. He had shown Blair some of his family members' pictures—something Blair has been relying on unhealthily.

'And why you don't have any dark times? Or extraordinary good times?'

Blair needed to run out of that room before she'd lose her mind. She clenched and unclenched her hand into fists.

'Or how you always get the money despite the poor conditions of your shop? Have these things never bothered you Blair?' She stood up from the chair but Ace again pulled her back down and took out his knife.

'Let me go! Stop doing this!'

'Blair, you are speaking and so am I. Let's keep on doing it until we are done without the use of any violence.' She looked at the knife that Ace placed in his coat again.

'You are speaking shit. What do I have to do with any of it? Stop manipulating me. Making me someone I'm not!' Blair couldn't hold her tone down. It was paining, achingly wrong. Her bottom lip began trembling just as she began realising that she was, a very part of what she said, was... right.

'Blair, I know it's hard but we'll go through this together. I'll help you get your memories back.'

'Why? Why should you?' Blair was barely holding herself together.

'Because we need you to remember how to trigger the scar. It is hidden but it can get bright enough to be depicted and detected and that's what we need. We need the scar Blair.'

'I'm not doing anything.'

'I'm afraid you don't have any option.'

'Excuse me?'

Dr. Donna stood up and walked towards Blair. She leant in so that Blair could even see the wrinkles around her eyes. 'You have to do it, do it nicely and we'll help you nicely.'

'And if I don't do it? Then what?' The rage and confusion bubbled up in Blair causing her to rise up from the chair again but Ace's hands were on her shoulders.

'A life without friends could be easy but Blair, a life without any friends and all enemies is not easy.'

'You won't do it.' Blair said, not believing what she'll hear.

'Oh darling, we didn't kill Kelly for nothing.'
