02 : Rules

There are three types of dreams.

One in which you are 100 percent sure of the fact that you are dreaming.

Two, in which you are 100 percent sure your dream is your reality.

And three, in which you can't really decipher if you're in the dream or in the reality.

That was the kind of dream Blair was having. The last one.

At once, she thought she was dreaming of her being kidnapped but then she'd be brought back to reality by those horrendous sounds of firing of bullets across the distance.

Finally, she succeeded to convince herself that it was not a dream but she was actually kidnapped. She popped her eyes open and a handsome, yet unfamiliar face presented before her. 'Are you Ok?' He asked but she didn't answer.

'I asked are you OK?' he repeated his statement, louder this time. Blair still didn't answer.

'Ok let me rephrase,' he swiped his palm across his forehead. 'Are you deaf? Or dumb?'

'Are you blind?' Blair retorted.

'Nice. You're OK.' He said. Blair, still confused by what just happened, casted a look around. It was dark, too dark to make up anything else rather than the face of this stranger in front of her for the spot light atop her worked. 'Listen up, I'll be taking you away from here and don't you dare make the slightest of sound.'

Blair raised her eyebrows. 'You were just yelling.' Blair said and made an attempt to stand up but a force pulled her back. She looked down and found a rope wrapped around her body. Fear took in and she looked around again. Where I really am?

The person standing in front of her was already untying her and as soon as she was untied, she made an attempt to run away but the brawny hands of the person pulled her back. 'You're going with me.' The voice seemed familiar to her as her brain relapsed and matched it with the voice from previous night.

Realising this, she instantly sprang her hand out of his grip she thought was too strong but she succeeded anyway. She ran a few steps away from the person and instantly found herself hidden in the dark. 'Listen, I'm not gonna hurt you. I'm here to save you.' The person called but she took more steps back until her back hit something. She trailed her hand behind her back and her fingers instantly curled around the knob. Or what she thought it was.

She was able to see the man still under the spot light, so tall, so muscular that she got the goosebumps. Thinking that she might escape, she twisted the knob and the light intruded in as the door opened. 'No, don't go out.' The person told her but she was already out.

She skidded to a halt in front of a nozzle belonging to nothing but a gun pointed straight at her forehead. Her hands shook, her breathing ragged, her heart skipped a beat and the light her eyes finally found after who knows how long, was knocked out of her as she received a fierce punch in her stomach and she didn't double over, but rather fell on the floor going back into that endless train of dark leading her nowhere but surely somewhere.

She struggled prying her eyes open and felt the sense of familiarity cause she was used to this struggle every morning. Dark was not there. She silently thanked God as she was scared of the dark.

Am I in heaven? She asked herself but she was not sure if that was really in there cause she didn't remember any good deed that could lead her here.

Her heavenly thoughts vanished as a bearded face with crook nose and brown, blood shot eyes appeared before her. A smile spread across his face. 'You're up! Oh God, finally!' He cheered.

'Dad, stop yelling.' Blair spoke in a low tone holding her head that threatened to explode. She pulled herself up and sat against the head board throwing her head against it. 'What am I doing in a hospital?' The numerous gold and silver chain around her Dad's neck rattled as he walked and sat on the chair across the hospital room.

'You blacked out,' he dad explained. 'But you were rescued.'

'What are you doing here?' It was an odd question but she needed the answer. It had been three years she didn't see her dad and now he was here, too suddenly. She was darn sure there was a good reason behind it.

Her dad's smile faltered but he still kept it on his wrinkled face that  still posed the tinge of youngness. 'I wanted to check on you. When I heard that you were kidnapped, I instantly took the first flight and flew here.'

'Cut the crap dad, you already knew about the kidnapping. How come you didn't inform me earlier?' Blair's tone was rather rude but she decided to keep it. It was not the anger, it was the curiosity.

'I ... ' her dad trailed off and disappointment drew upon her. She looked down at her body and felt a bandage wrapped around her stomach.

Silence was in the hospital room. All she could hear was the random chattering of doctors or nurses passing by.

Her Dad spoke at last. 'I've been reckoning it and I think it's time for it.'

'What time?' Blair twisted her neck to her dad.

'For you to have a bodyguard.' Blair's eyes popped out.

'What? Are you kidding me?' She said in a disbelieving tone.

'No, I'm not.' Her dad's stern , ordering tone was back. 'And it is important for you too.'

'Dad, no. I'm completely fine on my own.' Blair tried to convince her dad.

'That is the problem Blair,' her dad said. 'On my own is what scares me the most. You live alone Blair, you need to have a company so that you are at least safe.'

'Dad, where this conversation is going?' Her dad sighed and her ringed fingers rubbed his face. She noticed that one of the ring was of a dollar sign.

'Come in.' Her dad called and the door clicked open. Blair gasped as a tall, muscular man wearing a suit entered. His face was stern, perhaps at the verge of been broken if it won't move, and his hands were tied behind his back.

'You!' Blair exclaimed as she recognised the man who was trying to be Blair knight in shining armour the night she tried to flee.

'And you too.' The person nodded but didn't smile. Surely he recognised her too but was winning at the game of pretending.

'Blair, he is Adrien Mackenzie. He'll be your bodyguard and would be living in your house.'

Blair just had a heart attack.

And she wished if it could be true.

But it wasn't. She was not dreaming, her dad was in person, and Adrien was real too.

'Dad,' she was horrified. Of all the unbelievable things her dad had said till now, it got the first place so far. 'Are you out of your mind? Living with me? In my home? Seriously?'

'Yes sweetie. Just for two months.' He added.

'No.' Blair said straightforwardly. 'Never in million years.'

Her dad motioned Adrien to leave the room who obliged and with a little bow, left the room. He came forth and sat on the bed holding Blair's hand in his. 'Listen Blair, I'm going through some crisis right now. It's already hard for me to keep up my business and I can't afford worrying about you too. Please, understand this.'

'Dad, he's a guy. Boy. Opposite sex.' Blair exaggerated every single word, 'Get it? I can't even talk to him and you're asking me to live with him? I'm not out of my mind.'

'He is a trained agent Blair. He knows how to be in his limits and if he tries to assault you in anyway, you call me straight away and you won't see his face ever. He's son of my trustee friend. I trust him.' He begged.

Blair shook her head with furrowed brows. 'Dad, you trust him. I don't.'

'Blair, he saved you just yesterday and even got hurt for you too. Give me two months and you'll get rid of him but baby, just two months. I need to gather my shit together, and then, you'll be free. Yeah?' Blair watched the tiredness that seep in her dad's eyes. The lines that appeared on his forehead. The slouched shoulders. 'Please, do it for your daddy.'

Blair threw her gaze on her lap.'Dad, I can't.' Blair said.

'Please baby. I want you to be safe. Either this or come live with me.' Blair shook her head.

'Two months?' She asked him.

A little smile stretched across his dad's lips as he already saw what was coming. 'Two months.' He confirmed.

Blair ran a marathon of all the possibilities she would be going through just by giving herself in, in her mind. It was true she was alone. But because she didn't like compromising or even faking her emotions to make other happy. These were the reasons her friends group was slimed from eight to two.

'OK.' Those words escaped Blair's mouth and she knew already that she was in trouble.

————

Adrien didn't even mind offering his hand to Blair who limped in the home with pain penetrating in every ounce of her body. She took the keys out of her jeans pocket but they slipped and fell on the floor. She couldn't just bend down as her stomach hurt so badly but Adrien didn't mind either.

'Hey, can you pick those for me?' Blair addressed her question to Adrien whose eyes were behind the goggles and was perhaps looking straight. Adrien jerked his neck to Blair, and then looked down. At the keys which just fell.

He bent down, picked up the keys, handed them to Blair instead of helping Blair to open the door. Blair took a deep breath and murmured her thanks.

He didn't say you're welcome.

The lock clicked and Blair walked in aware of the fact that Adrien was just behind her.

Her home was a total mess.

Chairs were turned upside down, plastic cups were squashed on the floor, patches of wasted juices adorned her favourite carpet, pieces of shattered glass trailed around the leg of the table and worst of all, someone had slipped the juices on the pages of the book she was just reading.

She groaned and limped towards the couch she remembered was use as a base for a boy and girl to make out. She cringed at the memory but for now, walking from drive way  to her door with her bruised stomach seemed much of a work to put in. Adrien stood in front of her, across the table with his hands tied in front of him.

Blair didn't know what to do with him. She had already decided to give him the room upstairs. She wanted the ground floor to herself yet she still couldn't get out of the feeling that a stranger would be living with her. He was handsome, Blair admitted to herself but still.

Blair sighed, waiting for Adrien to say anything instead to keeping that cold epitome. 'Your room will be upstairs. I'll show it to you but I haven't set it yet. The cupboards and the drawers are already empty so you can put your stuff in it if you want,' Blair darted her eyes at the little suitcase that set right next to Adrien's foot. 'And thank you for saving my life.' She murmured and Adrien, barely nodded but stood still.

'I've got some ground rules for you.' Blair continued. 'You're not allowed to touch me or even come near to me in anyway. Don't interrupt me in my personal matters.' She pondered over what else should be the rule but she didn't come up with any. 'More rules will be added as we proceed.'

Blair flinched at Adrien's stillness. 'Don't you have to say anything?' Blair urged as she picked up her book from the couch's handle and closed it.

'I have some ground rules for you too.' Adrien said after a long pause.

Blair raised her eyebrows. 'It's my home mister.'

'Your dad pays 67% of the rent so technically, it's his.'

'Hey, it's none of your concern.' Blair argues but Adrien ignores her comment.

'You're not allowed to go out without my permission or even without informing me. I'll be going at most of the places you'll be going. Don't interrupt in my personal matters too. This bracelet,' he fished out a bracelet used for tracking. 'Should be on your wrist every time. As I'm your bodyguard, you'll be informing me about your acquaintances. I would need there information to make sure that they're save for you to hang out with. Once you are healthy of that punch, which won't take more than three days, you'll be receiving personal training from me about self defence. You wont eat any sort of junk food and we would be starting our training from 6 in the morning so you'd need to reschedule your work routine. Don't try to ditch me. I'll have my eyes over each and every move of yours.'

Blair stared agape at him. 'Am I even allowed to breathe?'

Adrien started at her from behind his goggles. He didn't speak for a minute, and when he did, Blair was ready to drown herself.

'It's your choice.' He allowed.
