Part 49 | Charges
I sit in my mothers car for a while after I return home. My hands lay limp at my sides and my head rests against the seat. I don't understand what just happened. I have never experienced anything like my blast before and I am terrified to do it again. I don't even know what I am going to tell Liam the next time I see him. How do I explain everything that just went down? I don't even know if Topher and Lisa are okay, I just booked it out of there.
I look to the garage door and command myself to get out of the car. I feel awful that I've left Teddy alone for hours even though he asked me to let him have a "down day." He said he wanted a day where he literally didn't have to move from his bed if he didn't want to.
I push the car door open and sluggishly move inside. My mom catches me walking in from the garage and calls me over to her. When I make my way into the kitchen, my mom's eyes widen and she hurries over to me, "Ellie, are you okay? You look like you might be sick." She runs a worried hand over my head and I watch her expression turned from worried to confused, "Ellie honey, you have something...you have...glass in your hair." I listen to her confusion as she picks tiny slivers of glass from my hair, like a mother monkey and I nod, "Mom it was crazy, a bird hit the window at the cafe we were at, shattered the window."
She stops picking at my head and looks to me, "That's insane. Was anyone hurt?" I shake my head and she finally steps away from me, still concerned she says, "When I saw you walk in looking so pale I thought maybe..." She stops talking but I look to her as I hear her thought about Liam.
"Maybe what mom?" She swallows and turns away from me as she says, "Well Liam dropped by-"
"What? When?" I ask and my tone comes across more worried than I mean it to be. I don't want my mom thinking I am concerned if Liam came around. She's already suspicious of our break up and my new relationship.
"He dropped by about a half hour ago. I didn't know when you'd be back so I didn't offer to have him hang around. That and Teddy is still upstairs, I'm not sure what he's comfortable with." I missed Liam. I hope he didn't go to his house after coming here. My mom's looking at me, waiting for a response but I'm not sure what to say.
"Teddy is fine with Liam mom. We broke up...amicably. I was hoping to see him though."
"Well he said he'd try and stop by later." My mom's focus suddenly goes to something behind me and I spin around to see Teddy strolling into the kitchen.
"Thought I heard you," he says with a smile and he pulls out a bar stool in front of the island.
"Yeah, sorry I took so long. Lily and Harper had a lot to fill me in on." My mom is still lingering behind me, pretending to rummage through the fridge but she's curious if I'll tell Teddy about Liam. She thinks I'm leading Teddy on.
"So I guess Liam dropped by the house a little bit ago. I thought I'd call and see what he wanted."
Teddy nods his head and with a slight shrug of his shoulder he says, "Yeah, ask him if he wants to hang out tonight." My mom interjects before I can respond, "Whatever you guys end up doing it needs to be an early night. Thanksgiving is tomorrow and I need both of your help around the house and kitchen."
I look to her and roll my head back to Teddy, "We can go get dinner maybe? Or Froyo and a movie?"
"Whatever you want. Let me know when to be ready. I'm going to go Skype my parents. I'll be upstairs." Teddy eyes me and through his look, he's giving me permission to go see Liam. He hops off the stool and wanders back upstairs.
"I thought Liam was laid back but...Teddy takes the cake," My mother says sarcastically and I turn to face her.
"Mom, I'm serious when I say Teddy is cool with Liam."
"And I believe you Ellie. I just hope you aren't secretly hoping to get back with Liam. Don't lead Teddy on." I want to respond to her, to reassure her for the umpteenth time that I'm not leading him on but when I go to speak, I hear the chimes of the door bell.
I bolt up off my seat and run to the front door hoping Liam came back to me. I whip the front door open and my stomach immediately falls to the floor.
Two uniformed police officers are standing on my porch with stern expressions and their hands are perched on their hips.
"Eleanor Adler?" The first one asks and my mouth has seemed to lose all function.
"Are you Eleanor Adler?" The cop repeats and I nod my head. I hear my mother move behind me and she says, "I'm Eleanor Adler. Is there a problem here?" She stands beside me and shakes the officers hands.
"Ma'am we are here to discuss the damages that were just reported at 18765 West Gardenia Place. The residence of Mrs. Lisa and Mr. John Greysor." My blood runs cold. Did John manipulate the cops? Did Lisa let me take the fall? And John doesn't even live there, how is it now his residence?
My mom shoots me a look but I know better than to say anything that could incriminate myself.
"I know the last name Greysor but I'm afraid the name John or Lisa doesn't ring a bell. What is this about?"
"Mrs. Adler, according to the Greysor's, your daughter just caused thousands of dollars worth of damage to their property. Possibly to get back at their son Liam Greysor for ending their relationship a few months ago."
"That's impossible," she glances to me wide eyed, "Ellie has been at the Coffee Bean with her friends for the last couple of hours. And she was here last night. That and Liam was just here a few minutes ago, him and Ellie are still on friendly terms. There must be a mistake."
"Ma'am we have several witnesses that saw your daughter here dash from the house minutes after the explosion and drive away in a white Range Rover."
"Explosion?" My mother repeats, completely aghast and my brain can't comprehend what's happening fast enough. Is this really happening? I don't even know how to explain this. I decide to interject, "I saw the glass break. But I didn't cause it to. There must be a mistake." My mother pats my shoulder, a gesture telling me to stop talking. I don't know how I am going to explain this to her once the uniforms leave.
"Well from the looks of it Mrs. Adler, you'll be able to afford the cost of the repairs but I suggest you get a lawyer. The Greysor's are looking to press charges."
