Part 38 | I'm Still Here
On Wednesday, I wave to Mischa as we leave biology and I immediately head toward the coffee cart at the end of the science building. We had a rough test in biology today so last night was a major cram session. I order my steaming hot white chocolate mocha and pull out my phone to text Harper. I'm slowly growing used to not seeing Liam's name flash across my screen but it doesn't mean I'm still not hoping for it.
When my name is called out, I head to the counter to pay and a hand suddenly whacks my hand out of my wallet. Startled, I look up and see Teddy handing his card to the cashier.
"Whatever she has is on me, and I would like this water" he says to the cashier and the card is swiped before I can argue. He reaches for the bottle of water he just paid for and turns to me.
"Thanks, for the coffee. But you totally didn't have to do that," I say as we walk away from the coffee cart.
"Yes I did. That was the least I could do," he replies as we walk toward the small study tables. I glance to him and he's nervous again. He sees that I'm confused so he decides to elaborate, "Yeah, you know I invited you to this shitty frat party and promised a fun time and then I awkwardly kiss you in a tree house and you had to leave before any of the fun stuff happened." I give him a small smile and his confidence comes creeping back.
"I did have fun. And I have to ask who won the biggest weirdo contest?"
Teddy giggles, "Ah, the winner was Brad Tarley. He brought a kid that started reciting Shakespearean monologues." I laugh and he waves his hands around, "But that wasn't all he did, after his long, loud soliloquies he started acting like a gecko. No lie, he started crawling around and started licking stuff. Got real weird." I giggle again and his contagious smile is now splashed across his face. I had the most awkward kiss with this guy but for some reason there is no awkwardness between us now.
"Well, I'm sorry I missed it," I say before taking a sip of my coffee and he leads me to sit at the small table.
"I actually was hoping I'd run into you again. I didn't want to stalk you outside your dorms like a creeper but I did want to apologize to you."
"Why?"
"I feel bad for kissing you. I didn't know you had a boyfriend and I don't have to be a mind reader to know it was super awkward," he says and I nervously laugh at the irony.
"Teddy, you really don't have to apologize. You didn't know," I reassure him and he nods in response.
"Yeah, I just...umm...yeah. That's all. Okay well, I'll leave you alone now and forever. Enjoy your coffee," Teddy rapidly says as he begins to stand from the table but I grab his arm before my brain tells me why I'm doing it. He looks to me and I wait to figure out why I'm holding onto his arm.
"You don't have to leave me alone. Despite our awkward kiss, I did enjoy hanging out with you." He smiles at me again and weirdly enough I feel comfortable around him. I don't know why but after hearing him beg himself to get over Callie, I want to know the back story. He doesn't have to tell me anything but my curiosity doesn't stop me from trying.
"Your boyfriend isn't going to come after me for kissing you, is he? If not, then yeah I'm totally down to have a redo hang out with you." I decide to slightly confide in him, hoping he'll take the bait.
"Yeah, about that. So my boyfriend is actually in Virginia, so I think you're safe. For now."
"Oh, so you're doing a long-distance thing?" He asks with an eyebrow raised, assuming I'm bullshitting him.
"Unfortunately. He moved away a few weeks ago," I tell him, doing my best to convince him that Liam is real but he still thinks I'm lying.
"Well that's too bad," Teddy says before taking a sip from his water bottle. A smile is still playing on his lips and his eyes are completely flirty.
"What about you? I'm assuming since you were putting the moves on me last weekend that you are available. But I also know guys can be sketchy so..."
Teddy laughs, "What? I'd never do that if I had a girlfriend," he looks to the floor before continuing, "I actually just got out of a relationship."
I nod to him and ask, "Oh really?"
"Yep. Four long years of my life wasted." I wince and now I know why he had to work up such the nerve to kiss me. He was with Callie three more years than I have been with Liam and I am barely surviving being away from him.
"Wow four years huh? Sorry to hear it didn't work out." I say as sincerely as I can.
"Yep. The bitch was cheating on me with some guy at her school. She goes to UCLA so she was able to keep it under wraps for a few months. I found out and it just blew up from there." His voice is pure bitterness and I can tell he's had to explain this to a few people before. It's like a script he's memorized.
"Oh that sucks! I'm sorry, that must be hard." He nods again, deep in thought about their relationship. A lot of hateful things are running through his head.
"Yep. It's actually kind of why I kissed you the other night. I'm really sorry about it. I was hoping kissing you would prove I've moved on from her."
"I'm guessing it didn't?" I ask and he shakes his head. He's actually still really hurting.
"How long ago did you break up?"
"I found out she was cheating on me a couple weeks ago," he says, once again looking to the floor. I pull my coffee up to my lips again and I wonder who would cheat on this charming guy? He really does have a pretty face and from what I can tell, he genuinely loved her. I think I would go mental if I found out Liam was cheating on me. Stephanie's stupid face flashes through my mind and I instantly shove the ugly thought away from me. Thinking they are together in Virginia just makes my stomach sour.
I look to Teddy and lean towards him, "That really sucks. And I know from what everyone else keeps telling me about being away from the one you love, you don't want to hear it will get better. Or you are so young you need to get back out there and explore different relationships. Or the best one, enjoy college, don't let yourself be tied down." He starts laughing and his chocolate eyes find mine, "Oh god, I have heard all of those. Thanks for sparring me all the wise advice." I giggle again and he checks the time on his phone before saying, "Well I best be off to my next class. I am glad I ran into you though."
"Yeah, thanks again for the coffee," I say as I raise my cup to him. He's about to turn away from the table when he looks back to me, "My last name is Stark. Find me on Facebook. We'll hang out."
"I'll look you up," I say as he swings back around and I watch him walk away from the table area. I shake my head wondering what I am getting myself into. I don't have that romantic spark with him but I am oddly comfortable around him already. He just has an ease about him and his smile can turn anyone into putty.
I pull my phone out and type "Teddy Stark" into Facebook. His picture with a couple of his frat brothers comes up and I instantly start stalking. I see he's also majoring in law, which means he has brains. I flip through his pictures and I come across one with him and a dirty blonde girl on the beach. The caption reads, "Callie and I enjoying Cabo." So this is Callie. She's not as attractive as I had pictured her. Teddy is a looker so I am surprised how plain this girl is. I keep flipping through pictures and I realize Teddy blossomed not too long ago. From his high school pictures he looks like a completely different guy. He ditched the emo hair for a chic fade and started dressing like his preppy frat brothers. I'm surprised Callie didn't hold onto this guy.
I send him a friend request and tuck my phone away. I wonder if Liam is still checking Facebook and if he'll care about me becoming friends with Teddy. I hate that I have to play a guessing game with myself and I'm annoyed that he left me with no form of communication.
I finish my coffee and start heading back to my dorm. As I'm strolling down the familiar walkway my phone buzzes and I see a text from Harper.
O.M.G Who is this Teddy Stark that just added u on FB? Holy Hotness! I laugh to myself and as I'm writing back, I see a message from Lily pop up on my phone.
Umm...I need the scoop on this hunky Mr. Theodore Stark that u r now friends w/ I no u r still w/ Liam but I'm glad u found urself some eyecandy.
I shake my head at my perverted friends and for the first time since Liam, left I am genuinely smiling and happy. I still miss him with my whole heart but I am figuring out how to spend my days without him. I talk to Lily and Harper almost every day and I try to go out with Mischa at least once a week. I am making guy friends and am really trying to expand my horizons.
Harper may have been right. Liam leaving is the hardest thing that has ever happened to me but I'm still here. I'm surviving.
