Part 27 | Sorority Games ❤️
I glance to Mischa and we both try to wipe whatever looks we may have had on our faces blank.
Heather continues, "Now, we are going to be divided into eight teams because there are eight fraternity houses. You have to use all your rolls of toilet paper before you can come back to the Kappa House. The first team back to the Kappa house gets immunity from tomorrow night's games. There are twenty-five Kappa sisters and fifteen pledges, this means there's going to be three sisters and two pledges on each team, with one team having four sisters and one pledge. Teams have already been predetermined. I've written them out and Ashley will post them onto the wall." Our eyes turn to Ashley, who's holding a hot pink poster board in her hands with a smirk on her face. "Okay ladies, as soon as Ashley posts the teams, divide up, pick a pile and figure out how you are going to move all your rolls from this house to your selected fraternity house." I can feel the girls starting to strategize, antsy to get to the task at hand, but Heather holds us all together by adding, "Oh and one last thing, if any team gets caught by the fraternity they are TPing, the pledges on the team will be cut from pledging and will no longer have the chance to become a Kappa sister. So don't get caught."
I look to Mischa again and we are both worried. The Kappa leaders know they have to cut ten girls, so why not make it easier on themselves by having girls eliminate themselves. Ashley spins around on her heel, whipping her blonde pony tail around and marches up to the blank wall in front of her. She raises the poster board above her head and swipes her hands across the top and bottom to stick it to the wall. Mischa and I scan the board and realize we are on different teams. My captain is Chloe, and the pledge I'm paired with is one of the legacies, Sawyer. I continue to scan looking for Mischa's name and see she's also paired with a legacy, Valerie. I lean in close to her and hope no one hears me when I ask, "We are paired with legacies. What happens if we get caught? Just we would be eliminated?" She shrugs her shoulders but doesn't answer. I look back to the board and immediately notice the team with only one pledge- the clogging girl.
Everyone disperses around the room trying to find their team members and I give Mischa's arm a squeeze before we separate. I find Chloe still standing by the front door and Sawyer and I are the first ones to make it over to her. I'm intimidated to be paired with Sawyer because there are few people I know that make me feel fat and ugly and she's one of them. She's pretty much Gigi Hadid's doppleganger- model tall, model thin and model pretty and has such an effortless essence about her that girls instantly wish to be her when they see her.
We stand quietly waiting for the other two Kappa's on our team, Michelle and Lauren, and when I spot them I realize they are carrying large black duffel bags over to us.
"Okay, here are the bags. Let's start filling them and head out. Our Fraternity is the closest one to the Kappa house so at least we don't have too far of a walk," Michelle says as she quickly shoves a duffel bag over to Sawyer and me. As we quickly load it up, I notice Chloe seems uninterested and is slowly filling her bag. I pick up her slack and double time filling my bag to get this over with as quickly as possible.
The fraternity chosen for our team is the Kappa's brother fraternity, Sigma❤️ Chi and I'm realizing my team almost seems too easy- I was put with a legacy and my house is our brother fraternity. I follow Chloe, Michelle and Lauren out the front door and we are the first team to have our duffel bags filled and headed towards our destination. I eventually hear other girls behind us and even though there are forty girls scattered across Greek Row right now, everyone is doing a pretty good job of staying quiet. All the girls dart across the grass and we look like little ninjas rolling onto the lawns and scaling small fences.
Once we make it to Sigma ❤️Chi, I am relieved to see there are no fences for our team to jump or scale. Chloe is still moving slowly and I inch closer to her to try and hear why she seems so uninterested. It's quiet enough that I can easily pick up her whispers, I am so tired. I would so much rather be sleeping right now than pretending to play these games. I should just tell these girls not to even worry about it.
I glance to her as we grab a few rolls from the duffel bag and I watch Sawyer toss the first roll into a tree. I'm confused what she means when she says not to worry, so I decide to probe her for some information.
"Since Sigma❤️ Chi is the Kappa's brother frat, do you think they'd rat on us if we got caught?" I ask loudly and I instantly spot Chloe's smirk. She glances to me and answers, "We aren't getting caught, don't even worry about it. But we do need to use all of our rolls so get to throwing."
She tosses me two rolls and I quietly maneuver around the lawn. I watch Lauren wrap a roll around some bushes and I decide to cover a small tree on the front lawn. Harper, Lily, Derek and I used to TP the "dirts" houses all the time in high school. After the second or third time doing it, I perfected my throw with a calculated flick of the wrist so the tail end of the paper unravels as the roll soars through the air. I'm glad my days of mischief are coming in handy tonight because I am blazing through my duffel bags.
I manage to finish my stash before Sawyer so I take a step back to admire my masterpiece. Sigma❤️ Chi looks like Christmas in Colorado with how white the trees and bushes are. It looks like a blanket of snow has covered Greek Row as I glance around to the other fraternities. I haven't heard any girlie squeals so I am assuming no one has gotten caught yet.
Chloe is using a roll to cover a lamp post and she still looks disinterested. I'm glad she is confident we won't get caught I'm just wondering how she knows. Sawyer trots over to me as she rubs her hands together in front of her like she's wiping dust off her hands.
"My bag is empty. Who still has rolls?" She asks and I see Lauren coming over to us too. Her empty bag is under her arm and we look around for Michelle. We see her hunched over her bag across the lawn from us, pulling out two more of her rolls. We all look to each other and silently agree to go help her. When we make it over to where her bag sits, we see she only has four rolls left and we use them to cover the basketball hoop. Chloe inspects all of our bags and gives us the go ahead to go back to the Kappa house. I haven't seen anyone pass us so I'm hoping we'll be the first ones back.
Sawyer swings the Kappa's front door open and it is eerily quiet inside. Chloe walks ahead of us and glances around the living room.
"I think we are the first ones back!" Sawyer squeals and she shakes my shoulders with excitement. The front door opens again and we watch Heather bust through with her team following behind her.
"Damn! I thought for sure we'd beat you back," she jokingly says to Chloe while her team breathes heavily behind her. Our two teams find spots on the plush white couches and wait for all the others to file in. Mischa is the fifth team to come back and I pat a spot on the couch for her to come join me.
"How'd your team do?" She asks and I smile to her, "We were the first ones back!" She gives me a quiet high five and then leans in close to me to whisper, "It's weird, my team leader Cara, basically told us we weren't going to get caught."
I nod my head and lean back into her, "Chloe said the same thing. She told me not to worry."
"Then why even scare us in the first place? What was the point of saying that if none of us were going to get caught?" We watch the seventh team spill into the living room and I realize what team is left- the clogging girl's team. I look to the large antique clock hanging above the fire place and see it's almost 3:30 in the morning. I catch the nod Heather gives to Ashley before taking center stage again.
"Well done ladies!" Heather says and we give ourselves a quick round of applause. "I want to thank everyone for doing a fantastic job at being quiet tonight and I can't wait for the Fraternities to wake up to our winter wonderland tomorrow morning." Everyone is giddy despite how late it is and Heather continues, "Now, our first place team was only three minutes ahead of our second, but I'd like to congratulate Chloe's team for coming in first! Sawyer and Ellie will have immunity for tomorrow night's games." Everyone gives us a round of applause and Mischa grins to me. The eighth team has yet to make an appearance and I'm not the only one wondering about them.
Suddenly, the front door opens and I see the last team file in- minus the clogger. Their team captain approaches Heather and whispers something to her. Heather nods before addressing us again.
"Unfortunately, Sydney's team was caught at the Delta Gamma house, which means our pledge Jayde, is disqualified and no longer a Kappa pledge," Heather says with fake disappointment and I see her meet Ashley's eyes.
"Looks like she'll be clogging all the way back to her dorm and staying there for the rest of the year," Ashley says and I hear a few giggles among the girls. I look to Mischa and she knows it too. The games are rigged.
"Now, be safe getting back to your dorms and plan on meeting back here tomorrow night at 8 p.m. Goodnight ladies!" Heather dismisses us and all the giddy energy I had earlier has disappeared.
When Mischa and I are a safe distance away from the Kappa house I lean in to her, "So looks like Jayde was the loser before the games even started tonight."
"Now we know why our captains were so calm. They planned on her getting caught so she was the first eliminated."
"It makes sense. They have to eliminate ten girls somehow. My business professor told me that the Kappa house has been known for being brutal and they get complaints from pledges every year," I confide in Mischa and she nods her head.
"I've heard that too. So maybe instead of cutting girls at the end it will be the last five standing that get sworn in? There can't be any complaints if the girls get themselves disqualified. Heather stated the rules in the beginning." I nod along but we are both now lost in our own thoughts. I wonder if someone will get disqualified every night? If the leaders decide who's on the chopping block next and rig it so they lose on their own, do they already know who the final five will be? Mischa and I eventually have the same thought, where are we in the chopping order?
"Do you think they already know who they want to join?" Mischa asks me and I shrug my shoulders.
"Maybe these games will help them decide?"
"Well at least you are good for tomorrow night. You know you will be back Wednesday for sure. I don't want to be the next to go," Mischa states and it gives me a thought. Maybe I can somehow listen in to find out who's going to be cut next? Maybe I can somehow get Heather alone and try and find out where Mischa and I sit on her list?
We finally make it back to our dorms and my feet feel like lead weights. My energy is gone and my arm is sore from throwing so many rolls of toilet paper. I wave goodbye to Mischa and flop onto my plush bed as soon as I am back to my room. I quickly kick off my shoes and snuggle into the soft blankets not even bothering to change into pajamas. I don't think it took me longer than five minutes to pass out.
