Part 18 | Greek Row❤️
My moment has arrived. I stand at the bottom of Greek Row and see the white picket fence that separates the Kappa Delta house towards the top of the hill.
At the entrance to Greek Row, I am handed a ziplock bag with "Survival Pack" written in Sharpie on the front. Inside is a travel size bottle of hairspray, gum, chapstick, five bobby pins, a pen, kleenex and a safety pin. Mischa and I clutch onto our ziplocks and stride up the hill and over to the Kappa house. There is a sea of potential frat brothers and sorority sisters navigating their way through the houses and I notice a few girls from my classes in line for Sigma Alpha. ❤️ no no no no noooooooooo
We are in awe as we approach Kappa Delta's gorgeous two story brick building with four white columns that support a small white upstairs deck. Vines crawl down the sides of the building and there are mini palm trees at the sides of the outside veranda. The sidewalk leading up to the front door has lights running along its path and a bright spotlight illuminates the metal KAPPA DELTA letters nailed above the front door. I see the same five blondes from the informational booth handing out name tags to potential pledges. I read the prettiest girls name tag and am reminded that her name is Heather.
"So glad to see you two again," she says with her signature bright smile. I grab a name tag from her and in pretty swirly letters I write my name and stick the name tag to my shirt. Mischa and I jump in line and follow the train of other dressed up girls waiting patiently to enter the house. I am overcome with excitement as soon as I step onto the marble flooring. I immediately notice the two grand-staircases with elaborate metal banisters connect at the top of a hallway. A large round cherry wood table sits in the middle of the foyer between the two stair cases. A vibrant vase of exotic flowers adorns the empty table and almost looks out of place in the otherwise white room.
I look to the first staircase and eye the four wide rectangular frames hung at the bottom of the stairs, proudly displaying the previous members photos. Another frame displays the founding members and a smaller frame displays the sororities Creed and coat of arms.
The train of girls swerves into the swank living room and there is a punch bowl with light bites displayed in the connected dining room. None of the furniture in this room looks practical to sit on so Mischa and I grab a cup of pink punch and head into the kitchen. Everything about this house is light, white and airy. The granite counter tops are light gray and the cabinets are glossy white. The furniture is all neatly upholstered with plush white fabric and even the bathrooms are white porcelain with white marble flooring. All the doors to the girls rooms are open and it looks like it's been set up so it's two to a room. Even the bedrooms have posh furniture and wide walk-in closets. I look to Mischa as we make our way back downstairs and out to the lavish back yard.
"This can't be a party house. There is not a single stain on any of the white furniture and everything is in immaculate condition," I whisper to Mischa as we find comfy stools by the sparkling pool. There are nets of twinkle lights draped over the bushes and an illuminated gazebo takes up the small grassy area. The grass is thick and dark green which is rare in Malibu- the yard alone displays how lavish the house is. Mischa looks around to the other timid girls, all carrying punch and loitering around the yard. I notice only a handful have dared to touch the snacks.
"I know, it feels like we are in a museum because I don't dare touch a thing!" She replies while catching my eye.
"No wonder it's so expensive to live here. I think the bathrooms here are nicer than mine in Dallas," I whisper back and she nods in agreement. Both Mischa and I are used to a lavish lifestyle but this one seems unpractical. How do twenty-five girls live here and it looks this neat? I don't think it's a facade either because the girls had their closets open and each one had a neat closet system installed and every shoe and belt had it's place.
I spot Heather prancing down the patio stairs in her navy formfitting lace dress and she joins the majority of the anxious girls over by the outside bar. She grabs a crystal glass from the cabinet and clinks it softly with a fork. The murmurs fade and Heather gracefully steps onto a small stool next to the bar.
"Good evening ladies, as most of you now know my name is Heather and I am the President of the Pepperdine chapter of Kappa Delta." There is a loud round of applause and Heather beams brightly at all the eager hopefuls before continuing. "I am so excited that we have had such a successful open house tonight. I hope you have all had a tour of the house and have managed to check out all of the living quarters Kappa Delta has to offer." Everyone offers a small golf clap and I am just as eager as the thirty other girls here.
"Now, I know me and the other Kappa Delta leaders haven't gotten a chance to speak with every girl here, so please come and see us before you leave to make sure we have your contact information. I'm now going to turn it over to the Vice President of Kappa Delta, so if you can please give a warm welcome to Ashley!" Everyone of course does as they're told and claps loudly as Heather and Ashley switch places. Ashley swings her long blonde hair behind her shoulders and clasps her hands together before speaking.
"Hi everyone, I'm Ashley, and I would first like to mention how beautiful all you ladies look tonight. We really do appreciate you stopping by and keeping Kappa Delta as an option as you rush this week. With that said, I wanted to remind all the ladies here that this year we only have five open spots so our selection process is going to be extremely rigorous. Fifteen bids are going to go out to girls that really left an impression on us either tonight or at our open house this Wednesday and bids will be sent out Friday. Pledging officially begins a week from today and I am so excited so see which of your gorgeous faces will be joining us for our first meeting."
I see girls glancing to other girls while Ashley gives her speech and I hear girls mentally weeding out other girls based solely on appearance. I am happy to hear that most of them think I am a shoo in to receive a bid. I hear another girl behind me whispering something about a legacy to her friend and I turn and ask her what she meant.
"A legacy?" She asks me and I ask her to explain to me what that is.
"A legacy is someone that has a relative that was previously a Kappa Delta. This year there are three girls that are legacies so they get automatic bids into the sorority. They still have to complete rush week and it doesn't always mean automatic acceptance, but the three girls here have mothers that are on the board for Kappa Delta. So basically what Heather and Ashley failed to mention is three spots are already basically taken, which means there are really only two open spots." I glance to Mischa and we both look nervous. She has the same thought I do and we both look around the yard to get any hints as to who the legacy girls are. I look back to the girl that fed me the information and ask, "How do you know this?"
"I was in the bathroom and I heard other girls talking about it outside the door. I don't know who the legacy ladies are but they seem to know. I only know one of the girls' name is Sawyer," she answers and her and her friends start walking across the yard to go back into the house. The sun has fully set and my arms are starting to get goosebumps from the slight breeze. I text Liam, asking him to pick me and Mischa up at the Greek Row entrance as I do not want to walk that far in these four-inch heels again. The other girls have slowly started vacating the house so Mischa and I follow. When we get to the sliding glass door, we see Heather is finally by herself so we summon the courage to approach her.
"Hey Heather, we just wanted to thank you for having us and let you know how excited we are about all the information we got about Kappa Delta tonight," Mischa says as I smile and nod next to her.
"Thanks, I'm excited you two showed up," Heather says and then leans in closer to us, "Don't tell anyone what I am about to say, but to help ease your nerves this week I'll tell you to definitely be looking for bids from us on Friday." She winks and then turns away from us leaving Mischa and I about to burst on the spot. I grab Mischa's hand and we silently freak out with excitement. We are the last girls in the pool area so we quickly leap up the back steps and follow the maze through the house. We wave to the other Kappa Delta members as we exit the front door and are ecstatic all the way down the hill. I spot Liam's car waiting for us at the end of the street and Mischa is thankful she doesn't have to walk all the way back to her dorm either. Our heels click clack down to his car and he waves as I pull his door open.
"Hey love, you look pretty," he says and I quickly reach over to give him a quick kiss.
"Thanks. Liam this is Mischa, Mischa my boyfriend Liam." I introduce the two and Mischa waves to him from the back seat.
"Hey Mischa, nice to finally meet you," he says with a smile. I pull the car door closed and he asks, "So...how'd it go?"
"I think it went really well. The house is really nice! It will definitely be an upgrade from the crappy dorm rooms," I answer and Mischa joins the conversation, "Yeah and there is a pretty pool in the backyard with large lounge areas. It looks like it will be fun."
"Oh and the President herself told Mischa and I to expect a bid on Friday. So that was exciting to hear!" I say while clapping my hands, right as Liam pulls up to the drop off area. Mischa climbs out of the car after thanking Liam for the ride and I linger in the front seat as she leaves. We watch her disappear into her dorm building and then Liam looks to me, "So you're still serious about this huh?"
I nod, "Yeah, I am. I really want this."
"Do you just want it because Harper has it? Or because it's super selective and you're super competitive?" Liam suggests and I shrug my shoulders.
"Maybe at first it was because of those things." I confess and then I find the courage to confess something that's been lingering in the back of my mind. I glance to him and add, "But Liam, to be honest you have me completely freaked out about this whole Virginia thing. You haven't said two words about it and it would be a lie to say it hasn't been on your mind. I kind of want the security the sorority has to offer if you decide to go to Virginia. If you leave, I'll have a support system and something to focus on so I won't go crazy."
Liam cuts the ignition, angles his body toward me and with a pained expression says, "Ellie, I'm not going to leave you. You can't honestly believe I would just move to Virginia without you."
"That's just it Liam. Without me. Like there is an option of me actually coming with you. I have no desire to take your dad up on his offer. What would I tell my parents? Sorry mom, I am dropping out of school to join Liam in the C.I.A? I don't think so." I look away from Liam's somber eyes and start picking at my pink nail polish, leaving small flakes all over his seat.
"I don't know what is in store for me and my dad, but I do know that he will never come between us. If it's not both of us going it's neither of us going. I don't care about Virginia if it's something you have no interest in. You can finish school and we can figure things out together. But if you're only joining a sorority because you've convinced yourself that I'll leave you, then that reason is pointless. Because I won't."
I shake my head and look to him, "You say that now Liam but you can't promise that. You might change your mind and decide you don't want to wait for me to finish school. Or that you don't want to live your life around my schedule, which I understand. You've always wanted to find people like us and this is your opportunity."
"You want me to go?' Liam asks now completely confused.
"No of course not! But if you choose not to go, it needs to be because you don't want to go. Not because I don't want you to. You said you wouldn't hold me back when it came to me going to college, I won't hold you back when it comes to something you truly want," I say softly and Liam reaches across the console to grab my hand. I choke back tears as I do not want to cry over this. I need to believe what I am saying and not wish deep down that he'll stay with me forever.
"I'm not going anywhere Ellie. There are ways to find others like us that doesn't involve the C.I.A. Don't get yourself worked up over this. You mean too much to me to leave you behind," he says and then gently brushes his lips against my forehead, "Can you stay at my place tonight?" I think about it for a second and as much as I want to, I know I won't get my homework done if I go over there.
"I still have English homework I gotta do before tomorrow. But I'll stay with you tomorrow night." He nods his head at my response and I give him a deep kiss before leaving his car. I unbuckle my seat belt and softly close the car door behind me. I am about to make it to the entry doors when Liam calls out to me, "Oh Ellie, I forgot. My dad wants to have dinner with us on Wednesday. So plan for that." He quickly rolls up the window so I can't argue with him. The last thing I want to worry about this week is appeasing one of Liam's manipulative parents.
