Part 15 | Rush

I quickly hang up with Harper as soon as I round the corner of the hallway that leads to our gymnasium. It's Wednesday night and I am on my way to the sorority informational meeting that Harper hyped up my entire walk down here. My tall brown wedges are pinching my toes and I regretted wearing them about five steps outside my dorm door. They were the only shoe I had that matched my coral dress so I sucked up the pain and continued down to the sports complex.

I'm supposed to meet Mischa outside the gym doors so we can walk in together, so I'm peering around a sea of heads to find her. Her jet-black hair stands out among the blonde crowd and I instantly complement her plum lace-top dress that pops against her dark skin. Like mine, her hair is down in soft curls and we both went with fresh and natural makeup.

"Ready to go into the madness?" She asks after we finish exchanging compliments and I nod my head. She laces her arm around my elbow and we stay connected as we walk into the gym. We both are in awe as we see about thirty booths set up taking over the entire gym. On the right side are fraternities and on the left are sororities. We excitedly follow the swarm of girls down the walkway and I spot the Kappa Delta booth toward the front. I tug Mischa along with me and we're greeted by five other blondes with bright white smiles handing out Kappa Delta information packets. Each one of them is sporting a black t-shirt with the green Kappa Delta logo printed on the front, paired with a mini jean skirt.

"Hi, are you interested in Kappa Delta?" The prettiest of the blondes asks me as I stop in front of their table to pick up a packet. Please don't be another waste of my time. I flit my eyes to her fake smile and reply, "Yeah, my friend at Louisville is rushing for this sorority so I thought I would check it out." She's already inspected my outfit with her once over and she's wondering if I have the money to join their sorority. I forgot about the cost to get in, so I'm sure each girl that approaches this table carries an invisible price tag attached to her. I nudge my Chanel bag forward and two of the blondes take notice.

Another blonde steps forward and hands me a shiny brochure, "I'd love to tell you more about us. We are one of the largest and most well-known sororities and we date all the way back to 1897. Our mission is to create a sisterly love and friendship that lasts way beyond graduation. We are involved with the girl scouts, the Children's Hospital, and child abuse prevention. We strive to inspire girls to reach their full potential and really encourage them to achieve their dreams. We have the highest influence when it comes to campus activities and our parties are always the envy of Greek row." She finishes her speech with a million-dollar smile and I wonder how many times she's already had to give that exact spiel tonight. I grab the other brochures she hands me and I know my mom will like that they work with the Children's Hospital.

"Sounds great! How many pledges are you looking for this year?" I ask and the first blonde glances at the million-dollar smile blonde before answering. Make sure to sound selective

"Bids will only go out to five girls this year. We are going to be incredibly selective about who we send bids out to so our sorority will be one of the most competitive to get into. But because we are so selective, it looks really good on resumes that you were a Kappa Delta. We have some amazing alumni that help with job placement after college too." With that said, my competitive switch flips on and I am suddenly determined to make it into this sorority. Out of the hundreds of girls here, only five will make it into this one and I am determined to be one of them. I will use all my skills and resources to obtain a bid from them. A third blonde that's not as pretty as the first two asks, "Are you looking into any other sororities?"

Mischa cuts in before I can say no, "We are actually interested in a few. We are just gathering information before we make our choices for rush week. Thanks for your help!" She tugs my elbow and we walk away from the table with bright smiles. When we are out of earshot, Mischa leans into me, "We need to look desirable. So don't tell any one sorority you are putting all your eggs in their basket. We want them to beg us, not the other way around." I nod as I agree with what she says and we make our way to the Delta Zeta table.

We get similar spiels from the other hand full of sororities we check into, but none are as competitive as the Kappas. Most sororities are sending bids out to dozens of girls, but they aren't as collaborative with on-campus events as the Kappas. If there is one sorority to put on my resume and spend the next four years with, it's Kappa Delta and Mischa agrees.

"Kappa is the only one with a tennis club and an exclusive hair package with Dry Bar for all of the events," Mischa gushes as we wander around the gym and I nod.

"Kappa also runs the Carnival and the winter bonfire at the beach. We'll have exclusivity to the best booths and fire pits."

"Their brother fraternity has the hottest guys too, not that that is really a factor for you," Mischa adds and I nod along.

"Well Misch, we came, we checked it out and we decided."

"We're going to be Kappas," Mischa declares and I nod in agreement.
