11- Bedtime Story
When JJ walked into Lara's room, she let out a whistle. The clothes were scattered over the floor and she was positive there was no sight of the dark grey laminated floorboards. Lara turned around with a frown.
"You know..." JJ said as she picked up a t-shirt, "when I was younger I hated cleaning up my room and my clothes. I used to cry everytime and then my grandma showed me a way to sort out my clothes so it was easier."
"But I don't like it," she huffed.
"I know. But it needs to be done. So how about we find an underwear first, get changed and then we clean up a little so your hair can dry too?" Lara sighed. She then opened up the wardrobe and began looking through a pile of scrunched up clothes. After a minute of groans and sighs, she finally pulled out an underwear. "Okay so just put that on, wear some clothes and then I'll be back okay?"
With a smile, JJ closed the door. She then walked down the hall where she found Neil humming whilst chopping up some vegetables. Silently, she waited till he put the knife down and then wrapped her arms around him making him jump.
"For fuck sake, Jay. You scared me." He slowly turned around, leaning his back on the counter. JJ glanced up to him. Her hands ran up his waist, passing the side of the apron, finally making contact with the tea towel draped across his left shoulder. "Are you done admiring me?"
"Not yet." Neil chuckled. "You've got a lovely face."
"I do? Nice to know." She sighed. Her eyes remained on his face, taking in his smile and the slightest sight of his teeth.
"Is this crazy? The both of us, the way we feel when it's only been three weeks?" Neil stayed quiet for a few seconds. Without answering, he leaned down, gently placing his lips on hers.
When he pulled away, he opened his eyes, watching as JJ exhaled sharply before opening hers too. "My grandparents were in love. Like super duper in love. They met one day at the library, said it was love at first sight and by the end of that month, they were married."
"That's something you see in the movies isn't it?"
Neil chuckled. He twirled her hair round his finger. "That's what I said. But everyone confirmed their story. Everyone thought it was this summer fling and it wouldn't last. But it did. For a very very long time. So maybe it's not crazy, and we're not crazy and it's just how it's meant to be."
Lara groaned as she opened her bedroom door. With a frown, she walked over to the kitchen to find JJ sitting on the counter whilst her dad was stirring something in the pot. She cleared her throat.
"Ah, you're done. Shall we sort some clothes out now?"
"What's happening?" Neil asked as he turned around licking the liquid off his thumb. JJ looked up at him with a smile.
"We're going to sort out Lara's clothes, aren't we?" Lara sighed and nodded her head. She hated folding clothes.
"No, Jay, you don't have to do-"
"No, we already decided we will." JJ turned to look at Lara. "How about you go and put all the clothes onto your bed? Sort them about out into shirts and trousers and anything else." Lara nodded her head with a frown before walking away.
"Honey...you don't have to do this."
She smiled, placing her hands on his shoulders. "How long does she usually keep her clothes clean for?"
"A week tops. But that's not what I'm talking about. First of all you're not well, second, this is something she has to do."
"I looked in her wardrobe. And that is something I know you would organise. I bet you if I lay out a way for her to organise her clothes, she will keep it somewhat tidy for longer than a week."
Neil sighed. "Cara, I'm serious, you don't have to-"
"Are you backing away from a bet?" She watched as Neil furrowed his eyebrows. "Neil, I assure you it's fine. I like organising things anyways so it's all good." With a quick peck on the lips, she walked out the kitchen and to Laras room. She stepped over the pile of clothes outside the door before stepping in.
"JJ I don't want to do this."
"I know sweety. But first of all, thank you for sorting your clothes into piles. I'm guessing the clothes outside your room need wash?" lara nodded her head. "Okay...how about we put all these hangers to use and instead of folding your t-shirts we can just hang them up? And if I was to tell you to get underwear and vests out, which draw would you go to first?"
Lara walked over to the drawer on the side of her bed. She thought for a second and then pointed to the far left. "And I would put my socks in here because it's close to the door," she said, pointing to the small drawer on the right.
"Okay...so clothes that you only wear in the house or the plain shirts, we can put in this drawer, same with pyjamas. So that way it's just there so you don't have to open the wardrobe when you come out the shower. Or would you like to keep it on your cupboard drawer?"
"Here is good." Lara then turned to the cupboard. Her eyes glanced over the three drawers at the bottom. "Can I keep my leggings in here? With my jeans? And then I can keep my joggers in the one at the bottom...oh and the winter clothes at the top so I can tell daddy to get it down after."
"Sounds great to me, sweety."
"And can we hang up all the nice stuff? So they don't get ruined?"
"Of course you can. Here's what we can do too, whatever clothes you don't want anymore or are too small, leave them in a bag and you and your daddy can sort through them."
Half an hour later, Neil knocked on the bedroom door. He heard a murmur and was then welcomed into the room by Lara. Neil raised his eyebrows when he saw the floor clear of any clothing. With a laugh, he looked down at his smiling daughter.
"Gotta say, proud of you tesoro."
"Thank you daddy. JJ helped me." JJ blushed slightly as she rested a hand on Lara's shoulder. She watched as Neil stepped towards her, leaning down for a kiss. Leaning forward, she met his lips, closing her eyes. Knowing that his daughter was right beside him, Neil gently pulled away.
"She's great isn't she?" Neil said as his eyes remained on JJ.
"Yes!" Lara cheered. "I got clothes that we need to go through because I don't want them anymore. And we even had time to do my hair."
Neil leaned down and kissed her cheek. "You wanna eat something first and then go to bed?" She shook her head. "You sure?"
"Yeah. I had a lot of grapes."
"Alright, go and brush your teeth then. When you get back you can read to me and-"
"I read to JJ." Neil looked back at JJ who awkwardly smiled. Noticing the frown on her father's face, Lara said, "It's okay daddy, we only read a little bit. I can read the next bit to you." She kissed her father's cheek and skipped to the bathroom.
"I am so sorry, Neil...If I had known that was something you guys did every night then-"
"Don't be silly." He stood up with a sigh. "I just didn't expect you to actually read with her. But then again, you helped organise the wardrobe. Let me guess, she wanted to read when you were doing her hair?"
"Yeah." She glanced over at Neil who was going through the drawers. "Are you sure you're not upset?"
"About what?" Neil turned around with a frown. He stepped towrdas her. "If you're talking about the reading then definitely not. I'm actually quite happy you manged to interact with her so well only knowing her for a short amount of time." Leaning his head down, he raised a hand to her cheek. "You're getting a little warmer from earlier. Soup is done so after I put Lara to bed I'll come and eat with you. Is that okay?"
"Neil honestly, you have to stop feeding me." He smiled softly before kissing her. Lara walked in, a tired smile on her face.
"Did you put cream on your face?" She nodded. "Alright then, let's get you into bed." Before she left the room, JJ kissed the top of Lara's head.
"Goodnight monkey." Neil chuckled as he looked at the both of them.
"I missed something here then didn't I?" Lara giggled as she got into bed. JJ waved at the both of them before quietly shutting the door behind her. "So..." Neil said softly as he got into bed beside his daughter. "You're having a lot of fun with Jay?"
Lara nodded her head with a yawn. "She's my friend. And she told me she likes me more than you," Neil put a hand on his chest. "She told me not to tell you. But I have to tell you the truth daddy."
"Well thank you for telling me. I bet you I can make her like me more than you."
"No way. I'm going to win."
"We'll see about that. Now you're a little tired so how about I read for you, yeah?" She nodded her head. Neil reached into the night stand and pulled out the book she was currently reading. Lara rested her head on her father's arm as he started reading.
