CHAPTER 28
Dax's POV
I answered my cell phone as soon as it rang.
"Yeah Matt?", I asked as I walked home with Alex following close behind me.
"Dax, my brother. I have some information on your wife", he said and my heart raced.
"What about her?", I asked as I rushed upstairs, not bothering to greet my parents who looked worried as they say in the foyer.
"I managed to get into the surveillance cameras and what I saw doesn't look too good", he said and I feared every word he spoke.
"What's it?", I asked as I felt my throat run dry.
I heard my door open and shut as I turned around to see Alex walk in with two bottles of water.
"Tell me, Matt", I said lowly.
He hesitated for a moment and this made me even more nervous.
"Tell me, Matt", I yelled and watched as Alex jumped and sat down next to me.
"Jesus, Dax, calm down. Okay, so I saw two guys block her way and put a black cloth over her face. They then carried her into the next alley. Through the surveillance cameras in the end of the alley, I managed to see them get into a black suv", he spoke.
I felt tears pool in my eyes.
Alex rubbed my back.
"I traced the suv as they kept moving through the city, but lost them as they got onto the highway where a few cameras are disconnected" he said as I heard him ruffle through some pages.
My heart sank.
"But don't you worry, I've asked my team to drive down and look into it. I'll call you back as soon as we find something", he said.
"Thanks, Matt", I said sincerely.
"Don't thank me, Dax. Everything will be okay. Get some sleep", he said before hanging up.
"What did he say?", Alex asked as I set my phone to charge.
I briefed Alex about my conversation with Matt.
He just listened with wide eyes and blinked occasionally.
"Everything will be okay, brother", he slowly said.
I nodded, too weak to speak. Too weak to put my fearful thoughts into works.
"Do you want me to sleep here? The couch seems fine since you'll want to treasure the memories of you and Jade on the bed", he said with a small smirk.
I managed to smile a little and ruffled his hair.
"It's alright. We'll share the bed like we did when we were little", I smiled and his face lit up.
"I'll go get changed. Also, do you want to talk to mom and dad? They're worried about you too", he furrowed his eyebrows.
"I don't think I can. I'll talk to them tomorrow", I said and he nodded before exiting my room.
I got changed as I tried to avoid the negative thoughts and possibilities of what could be happening to my Jade right now.
I looked at my wedding band as I walked to our bed and slept on her side of the bed.
I inhaled the pillow and could lightly smell her sweet fragrance.
Alex abruptly walked in and shut the door.
"I think I should just sleep on the couch", Alex made a weird face.
"Shut up, adopted one", I spoke through muffled voice, as my face was buried into her pillow.
"Oh come on, I'm the best brother. Not the adopted brother", he said and I looked at him.
I really appreciate how Alex has been there for me since the past hours ever since Jade's been missing.
"Thanks, little one. I really appreciate how you've been there for me", I said as he bounced himself on my side of the bed.
"Aw, my brother appreciated me for the first time ever!", he exclaimed making me laugh.
"Get some sleep, brother. I know everything will be okay and our Jade will be safe", he said before laying down and shutting his eyes.
"Yeah", I mumbled.
"And please do wake me up if Matt calls", he said before pulling the comforter all the way up to cover his face.
I nodded and lay down.
Alex fell asleep soon, but I couldn't.
I looked at the time in my cell phone.
3:53 A.M, it read.
I tried to shut my eyes and get the thoughts out of my head to try and sleep.
I tossed around for a while.
I tried to make myself believe that I couldn't sleep because of Alex's loud snores, but I knew it was because my wife was somewhere unsafe and that thought itself ran chills down my spine.
.
.
.
The next morning, I walked down the stairs and was greeted by my mom who gave me a tight hug.
"We're here for you, son. Everything will be okay", she whispered as she rubbed my back.
"Thanks, mom", I said and kissed her cheek.
"Come, have breakfast", she said as she walked me towards the dining area.
"No, I don't feel like eating. I should be heading to the cops", I said.
"Sit down for five minutes. I made you French toast", she said as she pulled a chair for me to sit.
"Dad left early for work", she said as she poured me a glass of juice.
"Hi brother", Alex said with a mouthful of toast.
"Thank you", I said as I took a bite of the toast.
"Did you sleep at all?", mom asked as she ran her fingers through my hair.
"Yeah, I managed to sleep in spite of his loud snores", I said as I pointed in Alex's direction.
"What? I don't snore! Don't-", Alex was interrupted as our guard rushed in.
"Sir, there is a note and package for you at the door", he said.
I jogged with him towards our entrance and saw a note above a brown box at our doorstep.
The note read:
Sending you my love and your wife's phone.
I immediately reached for the package and ripped it open.
Inside the box was Jade's phone.
My heart raced as I looked around.
"Who got it here?", I asked the guard who informed me about the package.
"I don't know, sir. I was at the backyard. I saw this when I got here and rushed to tell you because I thought it was important", he said, bewildered.
"Probably the guard at the gate will know?", he said a moment later.
"What happened?", Alex and mom joined us.
I ignored them and rushed towards our gate where another guard was.
"Henry, someone placed a package at our doorstep. Who did that?", I asked.
"Someone did? I just returned from a washroom break", he said with wide eyes.
I was infuriated.
"Do we pay you'll for this? To go to bathroom breaks and not know who placed this package inside?", I yelled.
"I'm sorry, sir. The gates were locked, so there's no chance anyone could have-"
"Stop it", I yelled as I jogged towards my car.
"I'm going to the cops", I shouted, so that mom and Alex could hear me.
I got inside my car and placed the box and note next to me.
I backed out of the drive way and was soon onto the roads.
I drove at high speed, wanting to arrive at the police station faster than ever.
As soon as I reached the police station, I rushed inside with the box and the note.
The Sheriff, Robert Singer, inspected the box and note. He then told me about the information they had gathered on Jade.
It was the same as what Matt had told me, so I just let it be.
"Mr Langford, we assume that the kidnapper will try to contact you. So, we need your consent to tap your phone", Sheriff Singer said.
"Yes, of course", I said.
He nodded and handed me a few papers which stated that I granted them permission to tap my phone, to trace and record the calls I receive and make.
I signed it and he called for his deputy to get the work in progress.
"Thank you, Mr Langford. We're doing our best to find more about Mrs Langford. Your phone will soon be tapped", he said.
I nodded and turned around.
I got into my car and drove towards home.
I didn't feel like going to the office today, so I decided to head home and wait until there's some more information about Jade.
My phone began to ring.
I looked at the caller id but it was an unknown number.
I suddenly grew nervous as I answered the call.
"Hello?", I spoke as I felt my throat run dry.
"Hello Dax. It's lovely talking to you after a while and it's even more lovelier to be sitting in front of your wife", said the familiar voice on the other end, making my eyes widen in realisation and fear.
