CHAPTER 16

Daxton's POV

"Alright Winchester, please don't disappoint me", I said as I sat down in dad's study with our lawyer and him.

Kane Winchester has been our family lawyer for longer than I could remember. He was an elderly man in late fifties who was really proactive for his age. His tall figure and thick beard made him look like one of those spooky men from the horror movies, but believe me when I said this man was an angel.

I mean, he approved of the idea of Jade and me marrying because he thought it would qualify as basis for a strong family business and-

"Snap out of your thoughts, son", he interrupted my thoughts, making me focus on him.

I glanced at dad who was sitting behind his desk as he stared at Kane and me who were sat in front of him.

"Son, you say that you don't want to get married next week?", Kane asked as he flipped through the pages of the file in his hands.

"That's not it, Kane. He wants to get married next week, but Jade isn't ready", my dad smirked, making my eyes widen.

Since when did my dad start teasing me?

"Uh, it's nothing like that. Hey, I just suggested next week 'cause of the business", I managed to speak.

My dad and Kane just chuckled.

A few seconds of awkward silence later, Kane spoke.

"Alright son, here's the deal. I managed to prepare this in less than ten hours and this is the best I could come up with", he said handing me the file.

"I mean, I didn't expect you to call me at midnight and ask me to prepare another deal by today, but I guess I should have know", he shrugged.

"And what does it say?", dad asked as he folded his hands on his desk.

"The same what Dax wanted. That they get engaged by next week and be married by the end of this month, that's three weeks from now".

I nodded as I skimmed through the deal.

This is what Jade wanted. She wasn't ready to marry me and the least I could do was give her time until her exams were done.

"You better hurry up and marry her, son. Because we're gonna tell people that you'll are getting married and that's why your families are extending the business. Not the other way around", Kane said as he stood up.

"I'll see you again whenever you'll need me", he said as he motioned towards dad.

"Come over for dinner this weekend. The Okoyes will be here too", dad said and he nodded.

"Thanks Kane", I said as I placed the folder on dad's desk.

"Don't thank me, son. It's my job. I get paid to do it", he chuckled as he walked out of the study.

"So...", dad dragged out.

"So what?", I questioned.

"So, what have you planned for Jade? Anything special as yet?", he asked with sudden interest.

"Oh, well I took her on a date last night", I shrugged.

"Are you for real?", he asked with what seemed like disbelief.

"Uh, father, what are trying to say?", I asked, confused.

"Daxton, you're going to marry her. Do something special for her other than taking her out on boring dates", he said throwing his hands up in the air.

"Uh, our date last night wasn't boring", I defended myself.

I was comfortable enough to talk to my parents about anything, but it suddenly seemed awkward hearing this from my dad.

"Oh then what did you do? Did you even kiss her?", dad asked and my eyes widened.

"I.. uh.. we", I stuttered.

"You didn't", he said as he furrowed his eyebrows.

"Look Dax, Jade is a really nice girl. As far as I know, women love it when their partners are romantic. At least your mom does", he raised one of his eyebrows making me roll my eyes.

"Yeah, I'll think about something. This is just so awkward coming from you", I said and he chuckled.

"Well, I know you haven't really been in a stable relationship earlier. Your past girlfriends didn't seem to last longer than a few months and I don't care whatever happened back then. But I care what happens from now on. I care because Jade is my friend's daughter and I also care because she will soon be a part of our family. So you better do things right Daxton Charles Langford", he said seriously.

I nodded furiously.

"Tell me something, Dax", he said as his gaze pierced mine.

"Do you really like Jade enough that you want to marry her?", he asked, continuing his piercing gaze.

His brown eyes searched my blue ones for an honest reply. And that's what I'd give him, an honest reply.

"Yes, dad. I really think that we have something between us and that we can make it work".

There was a brief silence before he spoke again.

"That's good. I wouldn't want you messing you around if you're not serious".

I nodded, not knowing what to say.

I stood up and turned around, ready to exit the study when dad spoke again.

"Dax".

I turned around and looked at him expectantly.

"I'm proud of you, son", he spoke with a smile on his face.

I smiled at him and his smile grew wider.

"You've always been my responsible and well mannered kid. I know we've been a little partial to Alex because he's the baby, but you must know that mum and I love you and are so proud of the man we've raised you to be", he said as he stood from behind his desk and walked towards me.

"Does this mean you agree that Alex is a spoilt bratt?", I chuckled and he raised his eyebrow.

"As spoilt as he can be", he chuckled in return.

"But you are my brave son", he said as he pulled me into a hug.

What's going on?

"Dad, is everything okay? This doesn't really sound like you", I said as I wrapped my arms around him.

"Everything's as okay as it can be, son. It's just that you've grown so soon and you're going to be married in a few days. I just wanted to tell you how proud you've done us. You've always been the obedient, the responsible, the studious and also the less pampered kid. I was an older brother and I know what it feels like. That's why I just wanted to tell you what we feel", he said as he pulled away.

"I don't know what to say, dad. I guess I was a little mad at times whenever Alex got away with whatever he did and I was always the responsible one who had to be cautious, but that's alright. I understand, you'll did it because you'll wanted me to be a better person", I said and my dad grinned like a Cheshire Cat.

His eyes were fixated on something behind me, so I turned around to see mum standing by the door.

"How long have you been eavesdropping, mom?", I chuckled and she walked in.

"Long enough to hear Jake tell you what you mean to us", she said as she cupped my cheeks.

"I love you, my Dax. I'm so proud of the man you've become", she said as she lightly kissed my cheek.

"Does this mean that you love me more than Alex?", I smirked and she rolled her eyes.

"Not again", my dad laughed and we joined in.

.

.

"Alex, eat some more", mum spoke to a very dull Alex.

"Huh? I'm fine", he said as he glanced at mom and then went back to scrolling on his phone.

"I've told you this plenty times, keep the damn phone away when we're dining", dad yelled and I suppressed a laugh.

Today was definitely my day, because no one seemed to care much for Alex.

Although, I knew it was just for today.

I loved how mom and dad spoke to me earlier today and told me how proud they were of me. They didn't tell me all these years of my life, but when they did today it felt so good.

"I'm done", Alex said as he abandoned the veggies and walked upstairs.

"What's wrong with him? He's been acting strange lately", dad asked mom and she shrugged her shoulders.

I wondered if it was still about Jade and if I should tell dad, but I decided against it.

"He's probably mad because you'll are showering all his love on me", I spoke loudly before sipping my glass of water.

"They will always love me more than they do you", Alex yelled from upstairs making us laugh.
