Chapter 36: Against All Odds
I wake up in a hospital bed. Machines beep all around me. I feel much better than I did before I passed out. Did I die? Is this...heaven? I sit up. A woman walks into he room with a tray of food.
"Where am I?" I ask.
"You're in a safe house in New York. That vial you had in your pocket saved your life," she says.
She sets the tray of food on the bedside table. Next to the tray is the journal I took.
"Where are the kids?" I ask.
"They're fine. I'll bring them in," she says.
I get out of bed. I walk over to the window. Walls outstretch for miles. I can see New York City far away.
"Jade?" Alex says.
Jake, Alex and Clarissa are standing behind me. I hug them.
"What about Sarah, Karla, Sam, Elizabeth?" I ask.
"They are here, too," Jake says.
I sit back down. I start reading the doctor's journal. According to his studies, the zombie with the dilated pupils have slightly faster speed and strength than people. Zombies with red eyes are stronger and slower then the one's with dilated pupils. The one's with black eyes are smarter, faster and stealthier then the rest.
Three years later
I look ahead. The coast looks clear. I walk into the parking lot. Jake, Alex, and Clarissa follow me. I walk over to the doors. I see seven zombies inside the grocery store. Four have red eyes, two have black, and one has dilated pupils.
"You know the drill, right?" I ask.
"Yeah, be cautious with the red eyed ones and leave the black eyed ones to you," Alex says.
"Good, at least one of you is listening," I say.
I open the doors. The kids rush inside. I run straight to the black eyed zombies.
I swing my machete at one of them. It dodges. These are always a pain in the neck to kill. I swing my machete again. I slice it's arm. It growls at me. I stab it's chest. It falls. One down, one to go. I swing at the other one. It dodges just in time.
It walks backwards. It takes off. These things are fast. I chase after it. It ducks behind a shelf. I turn the corner to look where it went. It's gone. I hear shrieking. It jumps off a shelf and onto me. I stab it through the side of the head. I regroup with the others.
"Did you find anything?" I ask.
"We found barely anything," Clarissa says.
"I have an idea," I say.
We walk outside. I open my map. I walk towards the forest.
"Where are we going?" Alex asks.
"To where I lived before I met you and Jake," I say.
I step through the woods. Not much has changed since I left. I can see the bunker door. I try to open it. The door used to stick all the time.
I pull it open. I step inside. It's exactly the same. Seeing this place brings back both good and bad memories. I have wanted to visit the bunker for a while now. Every time I'd pass by it, I'd be reminded of Jack and Iris. That's the reason I would avoid it. Now I need to be here. I walk straight into the spare room where we used to keep all of the supplies. It is fully stocked. I kneel down to access one of the cabinets.
"You lived here?" Alex asks.
"Yeah, for ten whole years," I reply.
She kneels next to me.
"You never really talked about Iris and Jack much. What were they like?"
"Iris was brave and strong. She would never give up. She helped me more times then I can count. Jack was the opposite. He was too trusting. He was a good person though. They both were," I say.
We collect everything in the spare room. I walk into what was once my room. I don't miss living here.
"Jade, are you coming?" Clarissa asks.
"Yeah," I say.
I take one last look at the bunker. To think that only four years ago I lived here is crazy. It seems like decades have passed. I leave the bunker.
Clarissa gets in the drivers seat. She drives us back to the safe house. She parks the car by our house. Elizabeth is talking with Sarah.
I walk inside the house. Kyle is sitting on the couch with his wolf, Kyra. Melissa comes down the stairs. We found her in the forest last year. She traveled by car from California to New York.
"How many times do I have to tell you that wild animal is not allowed on the furniture?" she says to Kyle.
The people here completely cured Sarah, Clarissa, and I. I asked about Kyle. They said he's too far gone. That they can't cure anyone who has completely turned. They told him they've never seen another zombie like him. One that doesn't attack the people he's with. I enter the kitchen. Sam is cooking dinner.
"What did you guys found out there?" She asks.
"Quite a bit actually," I respond.
I put my bag on the shelf. Elizabeth and her family come inside. In an hour, dinner is ready. We all sit at the table. Everything here feels like it did before the zombies.
I finally don't have to worry about if I'll eat tomorrow. I have a place to stay. I have my sister and mother. I have a family. I feel at peace here. I can relax. Everything is going to be okay for us. We are safe. We are survivors.
