Chapter 33: Rescued

Today is the day we get our friends back. The day I get Sam back. We will succeed. We have to. I'm probably going to face Jason. The thought of fighting him doesn't scare me as much as it did a year ago.

The only reason we stayed in the bunker so long was because we were afraid of Jason. He doesn't scare me anymore. I step outside. Everyone is getting ready. All of the sudden, I feel really sick. I walk away from the others. I throw up.
Oh no, no, no, no! It's black like Iris and Jack's before they turned. I start panicking. This can't happen today! I'm supposed to rescue Sam. Clarissa is behind me.

"Are you okay?" she asks.

"I'm turning," I say.

"What? How long ago were you last bitten?" she asks.

"About eight months ago," I say.

"No, what about Jake and Alex? Are you going to tell them?"

"I have to. Can you get them for me?" I say.

She nods. She comes back with them.

"Look, there is no easy way to say this. I'm turning," I say.

"But you weren't bit. How can that be?" Alex says.

"People who are partially infected turn eventually. I didn't want to say anything when I found that out. When I turn, I need you or anyone to kill me. I don't want to ruin other peoples lives. I don't want to be a zombie. Elizabeth and her family are going to take great care of you three," I say trying not to cry.

The kids are trying not to cry either. Even though we haven't known each other long we're like a family. I don't want to die, but at least the kids will have people to look out for them. Elizabeth's family and I haven't always gotten along by I trust them to protect these three. Karla walks over.

"Are you guys ready?" she asks.

"Yeah," I say.

She walks away.

"Are you going to be okay? Should you stay here?" Alex asks.

"I'll be fine. We need to go," I say.

We get into a car. I don't feel that bad yet. At the most I could have three days. After we save everybody, it would be a good idea to distance myself from the others. I can see the base ahead. Jason is standing outside. I get out of the car.

"Where's Iris and Jack?" Jason asks.

"They didn't make it," I say. "What about Anne?"

"Zombies got her," he says.

"This fight doesn't have to happen. Just let us have our people and we'll go," I say.

"No," he says.

They start shooting at me. I get behind one of the cars. I need to get inside. Karla knows exactly where they keep everyone. I just have to get to the doors. The people from Mia's group are attacking the others.

I can see a clear path to the door. I don't see Jason. Coward. Typical of him to run away while the others do the dirty work. I run to the doors.
I open them. Karla, Jake, Alex, and Clarissa are behind me. All of the sudden, I start to feel incredibly dizzy. Alex notices and helps me stay steady.

"Thanks," I say.

Karla takes the lead and goes into the stairwell.

"How many flights do we have to climb?" I ask.

"Twenty," Karla says.

We walk up the stairs as fast as we can. I'm coming Sam. I'm coming. I become winded a whole lot faster then usual.

"Do you need a minute?" Clarissa asks.

Will people stop acting like I'm going to drop dead any minute? I get it. They care about me, but this is getting annoying.

"I'm fine!" I say.

We push forward. We finally reach the floor where everyone is being held. There is a bunch of rooms. I go up to one of the doors. I kick it open. There is a family inside. It isn't anyone I know. I go to the next door.

I open it. Sam isn't here. I check the next one.
Sam isn't here, either. What if Sam and Elizabeth's family aren't here? What if Jason had them taken somewhere else?  Or worse, what if they're...dead?

"Jade!" I hear.

I turn around to see Elizabeth.

"Have you seen my family?" She asks.

"No, have you seen Sam?" I ask.

"No, I haven't,"

Things are looking bad. I open the next door. Elizabeth's family is here.

"Where is Sam?" I ask them.

"The room across from this one," Susan says.

I walk over to the room. I open the door. Sam is sitting on the floor. I start to walk towards her when I hear someone behind me. I turn around to see Jason. He stands in the doorway.

"Back off!" I yell.

He throws me over the desk. I pull out my gun. I point it at him.

"Don't think I won't shoot you," I say.

He steps back. Two of his people walk into the room. He leaves. I shoot both of his people. I walk over to Sam.

"Jade, I knew you'd rescue us," Sam says before hugging me.

"I wouldn't leave you," I say.

"Did you find our mother?" She asks.

"No, but she is out there somewhere. You will find her," I say.

"You won't help me?"

"I don't have a lot of time left. I'm turning," I say.

"You got bit?" She asks.

"No, I was going to turn since the last time I got bit. We need to go," I say.

"What? Why are you acting like this is nothing? You're dying, Jade!" Sam says.

"We can talk about this later. Let's go,"

"But..." I cut her off.

"Let's go!"

We meet up with the others. I want to find Jason. Killing him is the only way to stop him. If I leave him alive, I'm sure he'll go after Sam and the kids.

Right now I want to get everyone to safety. We walk out the back way.

"Jade!" I hear.

I spin around.

Jason is standing there with his gun pointed at me.

I point my gun at him.

"One of us is dying right here, right now and it isn't going to be me," I say.

I have had enough of his games. He dies now! I pull the trigger. He falls back. I start to feel dizzy again. I fall over. It's not long before I pass out.
