Prologue

It all began nineteen years into the twenty-first century. At that time, technology was at its peak. People were enjoying life with no care in the world. At first, when she had first found out about the virus, she wasn’t listened to. She warned them months in advance, yet no one cared.

Then when they hit twenty years into the century, the first virus was detected in her country. Again the girl warned them, but they didn’t listen. She watched as the places she had grown up enjoying closed down, and still, they wouldn’t listen. They never listened to her.

When they hit twenty-one years into the century, they had claimed to have found a cure. The cure was minimal. They didn’t have enough for everyone. Therefore, only a few people were given doses. The girl was excited, she believed it would work - everyone did.

When they hit twenty-two years into the century, the effects were seen. It began slowly. Wives reported odd behavior. Maids reported odd tastes and desires. Then, it was the police reporting multiple homicides, multiple murders. The girl, almost a woman now, followed the spread with amazed curiosity. She continued to inform them of the new developments seen on the news. Again, they told her not to worry.

Finally, twenty-three years into the century, it was official. The majority of the country had become infected with the new disease. This one far deadlier than the initial virus it was supposed to cure. Apparently, the vaccine and virus had synchronized. It was an apocalypse at its finest.

One day the girl’s mother had come home from work. No one noticed anything odd about her. The girl had been away training when it happened. Her mother bit everyone. First her husband, then her son. Her two daughters had been away.

When the girl arrived home with her sister, there was an eerie silence in her house. The door was wide open which she had found strange since it was the middle of a brutal winter where she was living at the time. She had motioned her sister behind her and motioned her to be silent. When she stepped inside, the sight scarred her forever.

Now it was twenty-five years in, and the eerie silence was broken with the occasional scream and plea for help.
