Zainab:
I was already grieving and hurting. I guess being stuck under a table was not the best thing in the world because my legs were hurting and some of them were even numb.
Who was it that these people were eagerly waiting for, I wondered? Was he their son, or the king of some vast kingdom? How in the hell was I acting? what was I exactly doing? Was I also waiting for him? That is definitely not who I am.
"Wrong move, Zainab," I whispered to myself while waiting. Seriously? Why did the awaited person take so long to arrive? His arrival was already being treated as a major event at the mansion. What else did he want? Will there be a red carpet laid wherever his blessed feet stepped? I signed!
"Where's he?" That voice, which always made me afraid, jolted me out of my reverie. "I want to ask the same thing too," I would like to yell.
A deep, smooth, foreign voice rang out throughout the house, greeting them all with "Assalamualeikum." To my astonishment, my heart skipped a beat and I just touched it to control myself.
Seriously? How was this voice affecting me? Why did it have such an impact on me? Ya Allah help me.
I heard them all say "Waleikumsalam," but I was unable to see what they were doing precisely—I could only hear their footsteps and voices.
"Welcome home, son, after five years." I heard a familiar voice. You guessed correctly, it belonged to none other than my aunt. Her voice, though, was happier and more contented this time. Were they bipolar or what?
Their movement ceased, which piqued my interest. I finally decided to peek up to see them moving cautiously, step by step, as they conversed.
"You must be exhausted after a long flight, so go freshen up and rest," my uncle said, in a loving tone. I was just wondering if these were the same people I knew or if the mansion had suddenly acquired new residents.
"Yeah, my flight was delayed and I had to wait at the airport for hours," I said.
While stuck under the table, I had the urge to sneeze but managed to suppress it for so long, and guess what? Before I could cover my mouth and nose, I heard "Achoo!" from nowhere. I simply had to sneeze at the wrong time and close my mouth, hoping they would not hear.
"Who is there?" His sister inquired, and his aunt followed suit because I recognized their voices. oh no! Was she coming this way? She is always the one who catches me red handed. Phew, you are gone today. Be prepared to face consequences.
"Hey, sister! We have a lot to talk about. I have missed you a lot over the past five years," he said, and then they all began conversing, leaving me confused.
Zainab, this is your last day of work. You are gone!
"There is no one; it is just your imagination," said the unfamiliar new voice, and my heart began to race.
"What was happening to me?"I had no idea who had arrived or why I was experiencing such strange feelings.
When I heard no more footsteps or voices, I got up, cleaned myself, and exhaled with relief that they were safely in their rooms. I should leave now.
"Yes! I succeeded, grinning, patting down my clothes, adjusting my glasses appropriately, and walking soundlessly in the direction of the door.
"Why are you still here, anyway?" The voice of my evil aunt stopped me cold, and I am relieved she was not aware that I overheard their chats.
I apologize; I just wanted to have a glass of water because I was thirsty. I am just heading out right now." Although I know it is wrong, there are situations when we have to tell lies in order to protect someone or ourselves.
"Mum, please let me go," he said, starting to recognize the voice that was saving my life in the home.
"She never listens," the evil aunt said, and I wondered if some people enjoy dragging out topics.
"Mum, please let her go; we have a lot to talk about." Again, the mysterious person came to my rescue by convincing his mother to give in.
When I turned around to look at them again, their backs were to me and they were almost in their rooms upstairs, so all that time the evil aunt had only been downstairs. I finally relaxed once the footsteps stopped.
Should I thank him? I should avoid him; this will lead to a conversation. No talking with guys.
I was lost in my thoughts and was about to enter my room when a voice startled me and my eyes widened, surprised that I did not dare to look back.
His voice made me stand still, and my heart skipped a beat again. I have to avoid him at all costs.
His deep, smooth voice said, "Next time, hide in a better place." My heart skipped a million beats, and since he was right behind me, I dared not turn around.
I just nodded, unable to say anything; he was right behind me. I sensed it, possibly with my sixth sense. oh no! I am hoping he stays out of my way.
Please move away, but what he said next made me stop dead in my tracks, and I could not take it anymore.
"I want to know you, I think there is something about you that is a mystery, even though I have only just arrived, I feel like we have known each other for a long time," he finished, and I just wanted to run away; no, he can not know anything about me, even if he had sensed something, even if he had a vague idea of who I was, he can not know at all. It is not going to end well.
