Chapter 30 : At the foot of Minas Tirith
They rode for two full days. In the early hours of the third day they came in sight of Minas Tirith.
The sun had not yet fully risen and the moon was shining on the bright white walls of the city.
This city. Majestic. Strong. Full of history. Imposing.
Elenwë thought with a smile that Aragorn was the rightful ruler of the lands they rode upon, of the people who populated this land, of this shining city.
At the foot of the white city, a huge, grey crowd was spreading out. The Orc army. Sauron's forces, supplemented by the forces Saruman had deigned to send to the dark lord of Barad-dur.
Elenwë shivered.
-There are so many! she murmured. And we are so few. Is our struggle not doomed to failure?
The riders pressed on, approaching the battlefield of the moment when many would probably lose their lives.
Theoden turned to the three elves and said:
-We will arrive in an hour or so. Our attack is unexpected, they cannot see us yet.
Elenwë smiled and looked at the last rays of the moon. She mused:
"Father... protect us."
At that moment, the opalescent rays of the star surrounded the elleth and she found herself bathed in a soft, silvery light.
She glowed and the men behind her were impressed. She looked so invincible! So strong!
They came closer and closer. Before climbing the last hill to the city, Theoden stopped the troops and gave them a five-minute break.
The riders dismounted, stretched, put their gear back on and got back in the saddle.
Then they stretched out in a long line to occupy the whole width of the hill.
Theoden looked at them with pride and put his helmet back on his head. He took a deep breath and climbed back on his horse.
He brought his horse to a walk and rode up the hill.
The landscape before their eyes was absolutely breathtaking. The army was even bigger than it looked.
Elenwë turned pale and turned to her brothers.
Elladan gave her an encouraging look and Elrohir gave her a nervous smile.
-Let's go..." he murmured with a slightly forced enthusiasm.
Elenwë heard Merry's voice and that of Eowyn. Elladan and Elrohir nodded, having also noticed.
Elenwë smiled proudly at the girl's courage and Merry's daring.
The King of Rohan turned to the army behind him.
Below, the orcs looked on with derision at the army that seemed ridiculously small.
-Courage Merry, courage for our friends. Eowyn encouraged.
-Form ranks vermin, form ranks! Halberdiers to the front, archers to the back!
The Orc general cried out.
-Argh! Eomer, lead your eored to the foot of the left flank! Theoden declared.
-The men are ready! replied Eomer
-Gamelin, continued Théoden, follow the king's standard in the centre! Grimbold, lead your company to the right as you pass the wall! Forward! Fear no darkness! Rise! Rise up, riders of Theoden! Spears will be shaken, shields will shatter, a day of the sword, a red day before the sun rises!
-Whatever happens, stay close to me. I will watch over you. Eowyn reassured the hobbit who must have been a little nervous.
-Gallop! Gallop! Run to ruin and the end of the world! To the death! Theoden, with his arm stretched out towards the sky, was galvanising his troops.
A roar came from every mouth:
-Death!
Elenwë also screamed, filled with an excitement she had never felt before. The light around her intensified and rays of it dazzled the orcs.
She gave off a strong aura of power.
Theoden smiled and shouted:
-For Eorlingas! Attack!
-TO THE DEAD!
They galloped off. The gallop of the horses shook the plain. Elenwë took a deep breath, suddenly realizing that they might all be living their last moments.
She thought of her friends and of Legolas.
"I hope you are well."
The men rushed towards the enemy army. Spears were raised, the orcs unable to look at the bright light coming from the elleth. The opposing armies collided and the shock was terrible.
