Chapter 29 : Departure for war

Elenwë stayed with her brothers for a while. She was happy to see them again, but her heart was moved by two separations already. Elrond... and Legolas too...

She hoped with all her heart that the three of them were well.

Elladan looked at her, concerned.

-You are very pensive, Elenwë.

Elenwë turned to her brother.

-Yes... As Ada said, times are darkening... the quest for the Ring is almost doomed since the dissolution of the Fellowship... Rohan has been attacked and now Minas Tirith... the city of men. I've been given a mission... a difficult one... I don't know if I'm good enough to do it or if I'll survive it.

She almost burst into tears but bit the inside of her cheek hard to stop herself.

Finally, she looked at the twins and confessed:

-But I am glad you are with us.

-No, too," Elrohir replied with a smile.

Elenwë hugged her brothers and looked out over the camp that lay at their feet.

A few fires were burning and several guards were standing by them on their watch.

The fires gave off a warm aura, and from a distance they looked like little lanterns with fireflies swirling around them. She sighed. The camp was so quiet, the calm before the storm.

She looked up and saw the vastness of the starry sky.

-How can the world be so dark under such a clear sky? she asked unintentionally in a loud voice.

-It is so..." replied Elladan.

-Times are dark, but we must not lose hope, little sister.

Elenwë smiled furtively at them.

After a moment of silence, she said:

-You should go and rest... the tent where Merry sleeps must be empty now that Gimli and Legolas are gone. I will also go and rest.

She kissed them both on the cheek and they smiled fondly at her.

She left them, feeling the need to sleep a little longer.

When the sun shone on Elenwë's face through a tiny hole in the tent, she felt as if she had just closed her eyes.

She sighed. Forcing herself out of bed, she realised that it was cold.

She put on her clothes and joined Merry and her brothers outside.

They were drinking something warm.

As soon as she arrived, Elrohir handed her a cup.

-Coffee?

Elenwë smiled stealthily and took the cup between her fingers. The warmth it gave off warmed her hands and made her feel good.

-And oh, are you sleeping? Elladan asked.

-Are you asleep?

-You've been looking at your coffee for about three minutes.

Elenwë blushed slightly and drank her coffee quickly.

-Lembas? Elrohir offered.

-Yes, thank you.

Elenwë ate a quarter of the elven bread and gave a quarter to Merry who had just arrived, still looking sleepy.

Eowyn handed him a helmet and a sword after having put on a chain mail.

-There you go! You are ready for battle!

-Thank you, Lady Eowyn!

-The hobbit will stay here with you, Eowyn. Theoden interjected. He does not belong on a battlefield and none of my riders will ride him.

-But, Uncle...

-Eowyn. It is enough.

Eowyn looked down and clenched her fists. She stomped away.

Theoden turned to the three elves.

-We break camp in half an hour.

Immediately, men were busy saddling horses, putting out fires and gathering their weapons.

Twenty minutes later, all were on horseback, ready to leave.

Elenwë called for Ebony, who arrived.

The white she-wolf was the size of a horse and wore a chest protector around her neck.

A kind of helmet rested on her head and a kind of steel reinforced saddle protected her sides.

"-Ebony... what is this?

-A gift from your father... come on climb up!"

Elenwë climbed up and found herself covered in a light, silver and blue armour with a marine pattern.

-Hannon him, Adar.

She joined Theoden at the front who announced the start.

Elladan and Elrohir looked at their young sister with respect and surrounded her. She smiled at them and murmured to herself:

-Here we go again!

She laughed lightly and Ebony shook her head.

"-Hey!"

Ebony's laughter echoed in the elleth's mind.
