Chapter 23 : Elenwë, daughter of Maiar

Legolas turned his head towards Elenwë and saw her sleeping again.

He sat down in an armchair beside her bed and watched the elf sleeping peacefully now.

Throughout these three long days without her, he had not stopped worrying about Elenwë.

Was she well? What was she doing? Was she sad that she could not go with them? Was she angry with him?

He sighed and took Elenwë's hand.

The hobbits had returned and the next day would be another feast. But after that.

He would have to prepare for battle.

Gather the men, arm them, and march to Minas Tirith to bring assistance to Gondor.

Aragorn had become restless of late. He wanted to return to his lands and was ready to fight for his people, even though they did not know he existed.

Mithrandir was preoccupied with the Palantir recovered from Isengard and watched him from the corner of his eye.

Legolas eventually fell asleep too, his hand still clasping Elenwë's.

When he awoke again, he noticed immediately that the bed beside him was empty. It was daybreak and Legolas panicked. How long had he slept?

Where was she? He touched the sheets. Cold.

She had been gone for a while, then.

He rushed down the corridor and into the different rooms to try to find her.

Eventually he came across Aragorn, who looked at him with a surprised expression.

-Legolas, my friend... what is happening to you?

-I cannot find Elenwë. Have you seen her?

-No, but you should look in the training ground, she may be there.

Legolas strode away, not noticing that he was leaving Aragorn laughing softly behind him.

He walked quickly to the field in question.

Some men were already there practising and he soon spotted her.

She was standing upright with a bow in her hand, notching an arrow and preparing to throw it.

He suddenly remembered that she was an exceptional swordswoman but a common archer.

Ordinary. As soon as he thought that word, he blasted himself inwardly. Elenwë is anything but ordinary. She is incredible.

He watched her and she shot her arrow very well, even if it did not reach the exact middle of the target.

Legolas smiled and moved closer to Elenwë.

She had just shot a third arrow and he thought he heard her lamenting that she was no good at it.

Slowly, he came up behind her and put his hands on hers, helping her to position her bow better.

Elenwë was startled at first, but then easily caught the scent of Legolas and recognised his hands.

She relaxed imperceptibly and Legolas laughed softly.

Legolas' breath tickled her ear, so Elenwë soon sneezed.

-Are you ticklish, Elenwë? Is that good to know?

-How so? she exclaimed.

Legolas laughed and helped her to position herself better, advising her on her postures.

By the end of the session, she was doing much better!

They stopped there and took the path back to the castle.

On the way, Legolas explained to Elenwë that he had not understood everything that had happened. Elenwë smiled and told him that she would tell him all about it later that day.

Legolas led her back to her room. At the door, he leaned forward slightly and very stealthily kissed his fiancée.

She smiled brightly and went into her room after saying that she had to wash and change.
