Chapter 17 : Unexpected meeting and sadness

She had just left Lord Celeborn and King Thranduil.

A sliver of moonlight brought her back to the battlefield of Helm's Deep.

There was no one on the horizon.

On the battlements, Legolas was watching. Elenwë had been missing for several hours. He was worried that although she was very strong, she was not invulnerable.

Suddenly, on the deserted expanse in front of him, he saw a flash. A ray of the moon that deposited Elenwë, still on Windlay, on the ground.

Elenwë looked around.

Her armor disappeared at that moment, letting her long white hair fall on her shoulders, made reddish by the blood of her enemies.

A head of silver-blond hair stood atop the ramparts.

"Legolas was worried? He was waiting for me to come back."

Elenwë began to walk towards the gateway of the fortress.

Suddenly, she perceived a malevolent presence a little higher up.

A winged creature, like a mutant bat. Black with red eyes and sharp fangs.

Without her being able to react, the creature swooped down on her and sank its fangs into her left shoulder.

She couldn't even scream because the pain was so great.

As soon as she pushed the creature away, Windlay stepped in between them, rearing up and the creature dug its talons into the mare's neck.

Elenwë drew Ant Estel and sliced off the creature's head just as an elven arrow pierced it.

Black blood spurted out and Elenwë found herself drenched in the sickening liquid.

She ran to Windlay.

The mare breathed hard, trying to breathe.

It was getting harder and harder.

The poor mare, with the nerves in her neck completely stretched, had a crazy look on her face.

Elenwë knew there was no hope when the glow in Windlay's eyes faded before she could begin to heal her.

Elenwë lay over the dead body of her mare, collapsed.

"Windlay... my beautiful friend... my faithful mare... why you?"

She let herself go.

Her shoulder was in great pain. A bit like a very sharp burn, or more like someone had methodically ripped the skin off her.

The pain became more and more stabbing and Elenwë suspected at that moment that the fangs of the beast contained poison.

She was done for.

A healing elf cannot heal himself.

She collapsed a little more, without strength.

Her eyes began to close, but Elenwë continued to struggle on.

Legolas had not seen the beginning of the attack.

He had come down from the ramparts to the gate when suddenly he saw that beast digging its talons into the mare's neck.

He had shot an arrow and then had seen Elenwë decapitate the thing.

She ran to Windlay and lay down beside her.

Increasingly worried, Legolas hissed at Arod and galloped away.

Elenwë could not take it anymore. A sharp pain ran through her body. She could not breathe except with great difficulty. Her eyelids became so heavy...

Just as she thought it was all over, she thought she saw Legolas' face bending over her.

-I... am leaving..." she said with difficulty.

A black veil fell over her eyes and she fell into unconsciousness.

Legolas wanted to carry her, but he was afraid of making her wound worse.

He was beginning to despair when a bright light behind him made him turn around.

A beautiful woman with long dark hair appeared.

She was surrounded by a yellow-golden aura.

-Elenwë... my goddaughter... do not die now... you have not accomplished your mission.

The woman approached the young elleth and placed her hands on her shoulder.

-I order the poison to withdraw!

A mass of blackish liquid escaped from the wound and Elenwë sighed and opened her eyes.

A hand held hers. She looked and saw Legolas, his eyes haunted by concern.

-Thank you. Lady Estë.

The sylvan claw opened his eyes wide, stood up awkwardly and bowed to the Valar.

She smiled at him.

-Fear not, Legolas Thranduilion. Elenwë will not soon leave this Earth.

-Little Elenwë... I am your godmother and I give you a precious gift.

She gave Elenwë a strength that warmed her heart.

-Your power to heal is matched only by mine now my dear goddaughter.

Elenwë smiled weakly and thanked her.
