Chapter 14 : Retirement and courage, Men will never cease to amaze you!
The fight was still gaining in intensity. Little by little, the defenders of the fortress weakened.
King Theoden, in despair, ordered a retreat.
-To the citadel! To the citadel! To the citadel! shouted the men of Rohan.
Aragorn reached the elven troops of Lothlorien and shouted to them in elvish to retreat to the citadel.
They all obeyed and Elenwë was the last to enter the citadel gate.
Soon, blows began to sound at the gate...
-Where are the horse and the rider? Where is the sounding horn? They passed like rain on the mountains, like a wind in the meadows. The days went down in the west behind the hills, in the shade. How did it come to this?
The fortress is taken. It is all over. Says King Theoden.
-You said this fortress would not fall as long as your men defended it. They are still defending it! They died defending it! Tenta Aragorn.
-Think for a moment of those of your people who are locked in the caves, unprotected and unarmed! (She gave Legolas a sideways glance in the mirror.)
-Get the women and children out and barricade the entrance! Shouted Aragorn
-So many deaths," Theoden continued. But what can men do in the face of so much hatred?
-You have no right to abandon them to such a death! Fight! Fight! Fight! Fight! Fight! Fight! Fight! Fight! Fight! Draw the sword and lead your horsemen to the charge! Shouted Elenwë, out of her.
-What do you have to say? You who are not even of my people! replied the King of Rohan.
-You will not go? So be it. Elenwë raised his head with an air of defiance.
You will not go. I accept it. But I will. And alone if I have to!
-It is suicide, Elenwë! Legolas intervened.
-You shut your mouth! I didn't ask you!
Moonlight was filtering through a fine murderer.
The rays of the nocturnal star surrounded Elenwë.
They made her majestic, imposing and frightening.
Her white hair, wildly loose on her shoulders, flew slightly.
Everyone was captivated.
-This is my gift... whispered a voice.
An armour made of star steel appeared on the young elf and she began to shine.
-I am not afraid of fighting. I do not fear death. I only fear dishonour. She says forcefully.
Theoden, admiring such courage, turned to Aragorn.
He nodded his head.
-Let us draw the sword together. he said to the Ranger.
-Yes," replied Aragorn.
-For death and glory!
-For Rohan, for your people!
-Sound the horn! Let the Rohirrims charge for the last time!
Gimli shouted "Yes!" He rushed out to blow the horn.
Elenwë went up to Windlay, without a glance for Legolas, grasped the silver spear that had appeared in his hands and shouted:
-For glory! TO DEATH!
The men shouted again:
-DEATH! DEATH!
Theoden's horse reared up and the king shouted:
-"LET THE DAWN BE RED! FOR... EORLINGAS!
The gates opened with a loud crash and all the cavalry of Rohan escaped along the footbridge, linting their opponents.
Elenwë, sparkling, killed with frightening efficiency. In his wake, everything was corpses and the entrails of killer whales.
Legolas, Aragorn and Gimli had never seen her like this. She was truly frightening. It was staggering. One couldn't take his eyes off her warlike figure, who was mercilessly shooting her spear and sword at the enemies.
Aragorn joked and said, in the direction of Legolas:
-What have you got yourself into, my friend? I would never want her to hold a grudge against me!
Gimli aquiesca silently.
In the distance, the first horsemen were overwhelmed by the number of killer whales.
The sun was rising.
At the top of the slope appeared Gandalf, and behind him Eomer and all the Rohirrims.
The horsemen of Rohan cheered these reinforcements.
Eomer screamed:
-For the king! For Rohan!
The horsemen charged.
Barely an hour later, the battle was over. The men had won.
