Chapter 11 : Lost
They rode most of the time in silence.
Many people followed them, dragging carts, mules or horses carrying their luggage .
Elenwë was ruminating. Why couldn't she remember what she had done when she had gone for a walk the night before?
All she knew was that since then, she hadn't been worried anymore. She was confident in her abilities.
Her companions had noticed her mood change.
She was relaxed and joyful, just like when they had left Imladris months before.
She laughed at Gimli's jokes, told anecdotes, sang in a clear voice as if to encourage those who heard her.
Legolas preferred this. She looked so much better that way!
Joy flooded her face and her long braided hair fell into the hollow of her back.
"Oops... but what am I thinking about now..."
He tried to think of something other than the young elf but could not.
"But I'm completely stuck! This is not good at all! Stop thinking about her!"
-Legolas? Are you all right, Legolas?
The Prince of Mirkwood turned his head towards Elenwë, who had asked him that question, and smiled warmly.
-Yes... wonderfully!
-Are you sure?
-Yes, I am sure. To tell the truth... I would prefer that you refrain from fighting in case we have to defend the abyss.
-I'm sorry?!
-...
-You don't have to decide for me, Hir nin. I will fight just as much as the rest of you.
Gimli sighed inwardly. If Legolas was trying to piss him off, he had succeeded brilliantly.
Elenwë walked away, a little annoyed by Legolas' suggestion. Did he think she couldn't fight? The truth is that she was hurt that he had such a low opinion of her.
She moved ahead of the group and overtook Theoden, who was riding ahead with his generals.
She quickly told them that she was scouting.
-Do you want an escort? asked the king.
-I am able to defend myself perfectly alone. Elenwë replied sternly before turning her back on the king and trotting off to Windlay.
Elenwë climbed on a promontory five hundred meters from the other horsemen.
From where she was, she saw Legolas riding with his head down.
So much the better if he regretted it.
She fixed her gaze on the horizon and noticed a light cloud of dust.
Orcs riding wargs.
No more than forty of them.
Scouts thought Elenwë.
Retreating, she joined Theoden.
-Five minutes north of here, Orc scouts are coming at us. There are about forty of them.
Theoden nodded his head and ordered his horsemen to spread out around the people.
Elenwë stayed in the front where she was joined by Legolas, Gimli and Aragorn.
She completely ignored Legolas and fixed her gaze on the horizon.
Drawing Ant Estel, she prepared to fight.
The first wargs arrived.
Without hesitation, Elenwë rushed forward at full gallop and decapitated the first killer whale.
She pierced a second and opened the belly of the third.
The men behind her were forbidden for a moment.
Legolas ticked. She was angry... because of him?
Elenwë, concentrated, did not see that her companions before them also started to fight.
The young Elleth didn't think any more. She turned into a killing machine. On the one hand, that calmed her down. No more trouble, no more annoyance, no more problems. Everything was simple. Killing. Nothing could be easier.
The horsemen of Rohan were stunned. This elf alone had to eliminate a third of the assailants.
Elenwë turned her head and saw Aragorn in a bad position.
He was clinging to a warg that was heading straight for the ravine.
She shouted but Aragorn fell.
Jumping down from his mount, Elenwë rushed to the edge and looked. There was no trace of the man.
His anger overcame her.
She saw red.
In a few moments, she killed the five Orcs that approached her.
The last of the killer whales fled.
-Elenwë? Gimli asked, arriving quickly. What's happening?
Legolas followed him closely. But Elenwë had forgotten his anger against him.
-It is Aragorn... he has... fallen from here.
-No... it is not possible... says Gimli.
-Alas... said Legolas as he picked up from the ground the pendant that Arwen had offered to Aragorn.
-We must go there. Theoden intervened. We must hurry. We are almost there.
Two hours later, the convoy arrived at the chasm.
The people settled quickly and the warriors relaxed a little.
