Chapter 30 : Dissolution of the Community

Elenwë also felt ill and couldn't help but fall to her knees next to her friend.

The moments she had spent with Boromir came back to her mind, and each of them hurt her as much as if a blade had been stuck in her stomach.

She sighed, with her heart on the edge of her lips.

-Alas! Said Aragorn. Thus disappears the heir of Denethor, Lord of the Watchtower! It is a cruel end.

The Company is now all in ruins. It is I who have failed.

Fainted was the trust that Gandalf...

had put in me. What am I going to do now? Boromir has forced me to go to Minas Tirith, and my heart desires it, but where is the Ring and the Bearer?

How can I find them and save the Quest from disaster?

For a moment he remained kneeling, bowed by his tears, without letting go of Boromir's hand. Elenwë looked sad, holding the other hand of the man from Gondor.

This is how Legolas and Gimli found them.

They came from the west side of the hill, creeping silently among the trees as if hunting.

Gimli had his axe in his hand and Legolas his long dagger: his arrows were all exhausted.

When they came out into the clearing they stopped in amazement and stood there for a while, their heads bowed in grief, for they could see clearly what had happened.

-Alas! said Legolas, joining Aragorn. We hunted and killed many Orcs in the forest,

but we would have been more useful here. We came when we heard the horn, but too late, it seems. I

fear that you may have received fatal injuries.

-Boromir is dead, says Aragorn.

We are unharmed, for we were not here with him.

He fell defending the Hobbits, while I was up there on the hill

-Hobbits! cried Gimli. Where are they? Where is Frodo?

-I don't know," replied Aragorn wearily. Before he died, Boromir told me that the Orcs had tied them up, he did not believe that they were dead. I had sent him to follow Merry and Pippin, but I did not ask him if Frodo and Sam were with him: not until it was too late. Everything I have done today has gone wrong. What do I do now?

-The first thing we have to do is take care of the one who fell," says Legolas. We can't leave him lying there like a carrion in the midst of those nasty Orcs!

When he said this, he approached Elenwë and picked her up and held her in his arms.

She did not cry, but her face showed deep sadness.

-Come on, come on! he added. We should hurry...

The four of them made a rudimentary stretcher to put Boromir's body on.

Gimli carefully chose many of the enemy's weapons to put them with their friend's body.

Legolas and Elenwë filled their quivers with Orc arrows.

They carried the body to the bank of the Anduin.

In a boat, they placed the weapons and helmets of the enemies defeated by Boromir.

Meanwhile, Aragorn and Legolas combed Boromir's hair, arranged his clothes and surrounded his waist with the golden belt offered by Galadriel.

They placed Boromir over the enemy's weapons. Above his head they put his split horn and between his fingers they left the sword of the Gondorian.

Then they dragged the boat to the middle of the river before dropping it.

It was heading towards the Rauros Falls and Elenwë could not bring herself to let the boat capsize.

Discreetly, without being noticed, she raised her hands and the water from the falls gently sloped down thirty metres, without damaging her precious cargo.

Then Aragorn spoke.

-They will watch for him from the White Tower, he said, but he will not return from the mountain or the sea.

Then, slowly, he began to sing:

Through Rohan, through the swamps and meadows where the long grass grows,

The West Wind wanders around and goes through the walls.

What news of the West do you bring me in the evening, O wandering wind?

Have you seen Boromir the Great by the light of the moon or the stars? »

I saw him ride over seven rivers, over the vast and grey waters,

I saw him walking through the deserted lands, until he disappeared.

In the shadows of the North.

I no longer live it then.

The north wind could hear the horn of Denethor's son

O Boromir! From the high walls in the west I looked into the distance,

But you didn't come from a deserted land where there are no men.

Then Legolas sang:

From the mouths of the sea steals the south wind, dunes and stones,

He carries the plaintive cries of the gulls, and at the door he moans:

What news from the South, O Sighing Wind, do you bring me in the evening?

Where is Boromir the Beautiful now?

He is late, and I am grieved.

Don't ask me what his home is, so many bones are lying there.

On the white banks and on the dark shores under the stormy skies, so many beings have descended the Anduin

To find the Moving Sea Ask the North Wind for the news he sends me!

O Boromir!

Beyond the gate the open sea road runs to the South, But you do not come with the gulls complaining from the mouth from the grey sea!

Then Elenwë sang:

From the Gate of the Kings comes the North Wind', and it passes over the rumbling waterfalls,

And clear and cold around the Tower sounds its horn.

What news of the North do you bring me this day, O mighty Wind?

What news of Boromir the Bold?

For he is long gone.

Under Amon Hen I heard his cry. There he fought with many enemies.

His shield cracked, his sword broken, they brought them to the water.

His head so proud, his face so beautiful, his limbs, they laid them out to rest,

And Rauros, the golden falls of Rauros carried him on their bosom

O Boromir! The Watchtower will always contemplate to the North Rauros, the golden falls of Rauros,

Until the end of time.

The four of them remained silent for a moment and then Aragorn said:

-Let me think! Let me think! Let me now make a good choice and change the evil fate of this unfortunate day!

He remained silent for a moment.

-I will follow the Orcs,' he said at last. I would have guided Frodo to Mordor and accompanied him to the end, but to seek him now in the Wild Lands I would have to leave the prisoners to torment and death. At last my heart speaks clearly: the fate of the Carrier is no longer in my hands. The Company has played its part. But we who remain cannot abandon our companions as long as we still have some strength left. Come on! Let us leave now. Leave everything we can do without! We will force the pace, day and night!
