Chapter 29 : First wave and Boromir's madness
It was a slight noise that woke Elenwë up.
She leapt to her feet and met the astonished gaze of Legolas, who was on guard at the time.
-Did you hear it? That noise? she whispered.
He shook his head silently and motioned to her to keep quiet.
Elenwë stretched out his arms, hearing as he did many footsteps.
She tried to count them. 12. No 14 assailants.
Too many for both of them! But still...
Nevertheless, they could not let their comrades sleep. Elenwë rushed to the sleepers and shook the shoulders of Boromir and Aragorn.
She woke Gimli and then the hobbits.
Within seconds they were ready to defend themselves.
With their blades drawn, they stood in position.
Legolas and Elenwë had prepared their bow of the Lothlorién and had notched an arrow.
With their senses on alert, they waited.
Elven arrows came at the end of more than half of the attackers.
Together they killed the last attackers.
Once this was done, Aragorn ordered them to leave.
Within two minutes, the camp was up and the companions were in the boats.
The day's route was rather calm. In the evening, Aragorn told them that they were only half a day's sailing away from the place called Tol Brandir, located next to the Rauros Falls.
-This is where we will stop for a moment to decide which route to take.
The companions nodded their heads.
-Now let us rest while we still can... Elenwë, will you take the first watch with Boromir?
-Of course I will, Elenwë.
Legolas glanced at Aragorn in exasperation, but he did not see him.
The night passed without a hitch and Elenwë again chatted happily with Boromir.
He told him about the legends associated with the Men of Yesteryear kings and Elenwë listened attentively.
-I love these stories! When I was younger, Mithrandir used to pass from time to time in Imladris, Fondcombe and he would tell me about the battles, wars, alliances, legends and conversations that brought him back the Lurkers or the Riders of Rohan. Not once did he fail to come and tell me the news from Middle-earth.
But now, for the first time, I have left my home to travel.
-So how do you find the "real" world?
-More alive and real, but also sometimes darker and sadder than he suggested.
They remained for a few moments in silence and then Elenwë said:
-Once he said to me:
"One day you will come with me, Elenwë, to see this world with your own eyes, I am convinced."
And so it was. I went with you, but I could never have guessed that they would leave us like that. He was one of my best and oldest friends.
-How long had you known him?
-Since I was a child, a little over six centuries.
-For an elf you are very young, aren't you?
-Yes... I'm almost six hundred and sixty years old. I am younger than Legolas, who is a thousand eight hundred and some...
Boromir burst out laughing.
-Indeed, you are like a child to him! No wonder he's so worried about you!
-What? What do you mean?
-He's always watching you from the corner of his eye!
-He is?
-Yes! Haven't you noticed?
-No, actually, I haven't.
In the middle of the night, Legolas and Gimli took over and Elenwë couldn't help feeling embarrassed when Legolas walked by.
"Ah, Boromir, that's clever, Boromir! Now I'm going to feel very uncomfortable with him around!" she thought as she lay down on her blanket.
She watched the sky until daylight, remembering the names of every star in the sky.
In the morning they boarded the ship and arrived at the place called Tol Brandir, just before the falls of Rauros.
They landed and had breakfast. When their stomachs were full, Aragorn told them:
-Now is the time to decide. Shall we go to Minas Tirith or continue on the eastern bank of the Anduin?
Deep down, like Gimli and Legolas, Elenwë would have chosen Minas Tirith, but she declared, as did her two companions:
-Alone, I would have chosen Minas Tirith but I defer to Frodo's decision because it is to him that this quest has fallen and I cannot abandon it.
The members of the Community agreed, generally speaking, with her.
Aragorn turned to Frodo.
-Give me an hour. This is not a decision to be taken lightly. I'm going to go away for a while and think it over.
They all agreed.
Frodo walked away, and the rest of the people were left to debate.
After a while they noticed that Boromir was gone.
Then the time was up and they worried. Elenwë was as alarmed for Frodo as for Boromir.
For Boromir had always found it difficult to resist the Ring's hold.
"Oh, I hope he does not do anything rash." She thought.
But alas, a momentary madness had taken the man from Gondor, and he tried to convince Frodo to give him the Ring.
Frodo, frightened, put on the Ring and disappeared.
He went to the boats with the firm intention of going alone.
But Sam followed him, and together they set out for Mordor.
At that moment, many Uruk-Hai attacked the companions.
Aragorn, who had gone in search of Frodo and who had been able to talk to him before his departure, found himself facing the wave of attack.
Aragorn, who had gone in search of Frodo and who had been able to talk to him before his departure, found himself facing the wave of attack.
Drawing his sword, he struggled for a long time when he heard the horn of Gondor, Boromir's horn.
Elenwë was with Gimli and Legolas when she heard the desperate calls of the horn.
She rushed to the source of the sound, running with all her might. Shortly after the calls had stopped, she arrived in a clearing.
When she arrived, she froze. Merry and Pippin were carried away by the Uruk-Hai while Boromir stood on his knees, his chest pierced with multiple arrows.
Merry and Pippin were swept away by the Uruk-Hai while Boromir stood on his knees, his torso pierced with multiple arrows.
She rushed to his side and wanted to start treating him.
She rushed to his side and wanted to start treating him.
-Elen...wë. He is... too late...for me.
-No! I will heal you!
-Let... Frodo, where is he? It's my fault. The Ring. It took hold of me. I frightened him. I frightened him.
-Hush. Be quiet.
...Aragorn came at that moment, and sat down beside Boromir.
-Aragorn... ...I have failed. Go... to... Minas Tirith... Protect my people. I... am... sorry. I... would have followed you... to the end... my brother,... my captain... my king.
Boromir smiled as he looked proudly at his leader. His head tilted to the side.
He breathed out at that moment and Aragorn closed his eyes, making no attempt to hide the tears that ran down his cheeks.
