Part 2: An Assassination: First half
Olivia's POV
"Hey, Olivia." I turned my head in the direction of the person in surprise and smiled.
"Hey, Chris." Chris just smiled and nodded.
(Chris/Christopher Owens is one of Olivia's best friends and is a sergeant in the police force of Crystalbay Police Department. He is also one rank below Irene as she is a lieutenant in the police force of Crystalbay Police Department. Ever since he and Irene found Olivia sitting at her usual spot without her old friends beside her as they either went to a different department due to their effort or unfriended her because of jealousy or laughing about her misfortune, they sat beside her and exchange stories. Soon, they became fast friends and the exemplary group among the police groups investigating the case.)
"I'm sorry about your loss." I gave Chris a soft and sad smile.
"Thanks but you really no need to say that. I'm fine." Chris became silent as he knew that I was not fine but was reluctant to refute my claims.
"If you need a shoulder to lie on or you need someone to listen to you, I will definitely lend an ear to your problems." I gave a grateful smile to Chris, kissed his cheek before striding to my office space. Chris look over to Irene and nodded because they knew how upset I was when the topic of my family was mentioned. Much worse was when someone asked me about my past as a slave, I couldn't control my emotion and almost got that person killed.
(Yup, Chris is more of a mature guy so he always helps Olivia and Irene anyways he could.)
Irene glanced sadly at me because she knew that I had always wanted to find the truth about who my father was before his retirement and who was the one behind all this ever since I was adopted by Irene's father. Irene glanced at the file in her hand then took a glance at me to check if I was okay. I held Irene's worried gaze and silently told Irene that I was fine. Irene nodded before flipping through the folder in a boring way before a woman came sprinting into the room with her face pale as if she had seen a ghost, panic clear in her features.
"Sirs, Madams, please help me!" All police personnel immediately sprang into action while looking concerned.
"Madam, please tell us what happened," Chris spoke in a tone softer than usual.
"I-I-" Chris immediately called one of the police personnel under his command to give the woman a warm drink and the police personnel nodded. Chris gave a warm cocoa drink to the woman and she smiled gratefully before sipping. Colour returned to her cheeks and she started speaking after gently prodded on by Chris.
"I-I was in the kitchen when the assassination of my husband happened. M-My husband was in the kitchen cooking lunch while I was in the living room with my kids. Suddenly, I heard him screaming his lungs out and I rushed to his aid but when I was there, he was already bleeding excessively while a knife was jutting out from the stab wound on his heart. I heard a swishing sound and turned around and saw the assassin. Before I caught her, she managed to escape through the window." Chris nodded and spoke in a gentler tone.
"Could you describe the assassin?" The woman nodded.
"She was about this height......." The woman stood and placed her hand half the length of the full length the hand could stretch over her head. ".....and was wearing all black. I could not see her face as her hood covered her whole face." Chris nodded, confusion written clearly in his features, and mentioned to Irene and me to follow him to the back room of the police department from prying eyes and ears.
Chris looked back and forth between Irene and me before his eyes settled on mine. I could tell from his gaze that I was the prime suspect as the assassin the woman described was the same height as I.
"Oh knock it off Chris. You know she was with me and you all the time." Irene huffed crossly at Chris and gave him a dead stare while putting a protective arm over me.
"But what if it was not just a coincidence? What if Olivia really did something behind our backs when we were not looking? Many people's lives are at stake, Irene!" Irene shook her head and sighed while staring at me.
"Olivia, may we both integrate you?" I nodded my head and they took the seats opposite me and got started with their questions.
"Where were you when the incident happened?" I gave Chris a serious look and answered.
"In my office place in Crystalbay Police Department." Chris nodded and immediately asked another question.
"Do you swear that anything you said is true?" I nodded and in a strong voice, I replied.
"I swear on Chaos name that what I was saying is true." Nothing happened but Chris's and Irene's mouths were wide open in surprise.
"Olivia, please tell me you did not just swear to Lord Chaos, the King of the Galaxies, the Ruler of the Primordials." I immediately nod my head that I did swear on Chaos's name and they were pale.
"Olivia, you know that if you swear by Chaos's name you cannot break the oath right? Because if you do, you'll fade to the void." I nodded once again and we all began musing about who would have done the assassination on the husband of the lady.
"Wait here guys, I'll ask the lady the name of her husband." Irene and I nodded and Chris swiftly walked to the place where the lady was. Once Chris was out of earshot, Irene turned to me furiously.
"Olivia, you know that not many people swear on the oath on Chaos's name since the war against evil right?" I nodded and she frowned.
"Then why did you do it?" I immediately shrugged.
"Because I know the effect of lying on Chaos's name and that I am confident that I was not lying." Irene nodded and we both waited for Chris to come.
-----a few minutes later-----
"Guys. her husband's name is William Fletcher. Do you both know him?" I immediately nodded.
"Yes. He is the person who had poisoned my father." Both Irene and Chris looked at each other then glanced at me.
"How do you know it's him? It could be anyone." I shook my head and frowned.
"It's him and I know it because I saw him in my old home before. He was smart to conceal his presence using magic that time when he came to my old home to kill my dad with poison but he could not fool me even if he used the hood to cover his face. But how do I not get fooled by his actions? I don't know." Both Irene and Chris nodded once before they became silent because they knew that they didn't know how I got this power and how powerful could my power be. Heck, even I don't know how I had gotten this power in the first place and how strong can it be.
"So the question now is, where is the assassin now?" Irene asked Chris and me and we both shook our heads.
"We don't know." We both said at the same time but suddenly a crashing sound could be heard.
"Sir, Madams, the General had given his orders. His orders for you all are to go to the Reinbuckles's house immediately. Apparently, there are pieces of evidence that the assassination is going to happen in their house now." We all nodded our heads and immediately went to the house of the Reinbuckles.
-----The Reinbuckles's Estate-----
"Olivia, Chris, you know what to do. When you see the assassin, do not engage unless he or she fired the first shot first. Got it?" Chris and I both nodded while rushing into the estate, guns out. We all immediately stood back to back when we entered the living hall, turning our heads to check if anyone was springing at us while holding our guns out, and swung to the left and right. Irene nodded at us and we all grinned.
"Cleared!" We all immediately sprinted to the stairs and into the upper hallway where there are many rooms. I saw the assassin and immediately ran after her while Irene and Chris stared at me in horror.
"Olivia! Wait up!" They immediately chased after me but both the assassin and I were already in one of the rooms.
-----In one of the guest rooms-----
"Wait up!" I heard Chris and Irene yelled after me as I raced into this room after the assassin. About the assassin, I saw her running into this room and was about to vault out of the house through the window but stopped when I called her.
"Wait! Who are you?!" The assassin gave me an irritated look before pulling down her hood to reveal......
"Huh? Why does she look like me?" I mussed as the assassin quickly pulled her hood up knowing that Chris and Irene were almost here. She prepared to vault off the window again and was standing on the windowsill as I called out to her.
"Wait-" But before I finished talking, she was already gone. I heard someone calling my name and turned around.
"Olivia! Thank god you were okay! We were so worried about you!" Chris and Irene exclaimed while running over to hug me but froze at the sight of my pale face.
"What's wrong?" I glanced around to see if anyone besides the two was here and gave a sigh of relief when no one was here.
"Come with me, I need to tell you something." They nodded, worried as they followed me out of the house back to the police department.
-----at the back alley of the police department-----
"Wait, so you were saying that the assassin looks like you?" Chris asked and I nodded as Irene looked troubled.
"Yeah. I have never been an assassin before so how did I separate into two being with me being here while another in assassin form?" Chris looked troubled as well.
"That's simple. Because you are me." Someone said and we all reacted in surprise before realizing it was the assassin from earlier.
"Drop your weapons!" Chris and Irene immediately yelled but the assassin glanced behind her and, eyes wide, she quickly activated her invisibility power and pulled all of us to the wall. We all watched as two people were looking in our direction but seeing no one, they immediately walked out of sight. We all sighed in relief and stepped out of the wall. The assassin looked around first and nodded after she hadn't found any danger and deactivated her invisibility power, making us turn back to visible.
"Tell us what you know! Now!" Chris demanded, pulling his gun out of its holster and pointed it at the assassin. The assassin looked at me and huffed.
"It's so simple, your friend Olivia here," She pointed to me." is me and I," She pointed to herself. "am her." Both Chris and Irene looked at me and the assassin in surprise.
"What?!" They both exclaimed while the assassin me gave me an amused smile. I looked at the assassin, confused.
"So you are me and I am you?" The assassin nodded at my question.
"But how?" She frowned and sighed after realizing she could not hide from this and spoke.
"Because you have the power to separate me from you, the true self of both of us." I felt my jaw drop as she said that.
"But that kind of power had not been found for centuries! The last time the power was used was......." Chris muttered out loud and suddenly froze, eyes wide in surprise before looking towards me.
"Olivia, you do remember the stories of the Seven Legends right?" I nodded.
"The only person who could use that power was Justice Gabelman."
