IV
This cannot be happening. This can't be happening! Ava thought.
But it was real. She could feel the slow breeze hitting her hair. The people watching them weirdly or paying no attention. It was real and everything had happened.
The morning sun was drawing out over the horizon, the sky remained dark although acquiring a lighter shade of black. The moon was still showing, becoming faint.
Adam was murmuring something about 'this was not what I planned for'. He was driving as if he knew precisely where he wanted to go. Ava kept her eyes on the road, not talking, not moving. The night wasn't over yet.
They pulled over to the old residential building on both sides of the road. They were the real historical monuments of this town. The vintage cars, the vintage décor, the vintage people. As soon as Adam stopped his car, Ava was blasted into her old memories... when she had been really young.
It was weird. She was only 28 now but she felt as if she had been 28 before. Her mind clicked inside as her memories flooded her eyes. Then, she knew what she had done to get here and what she had to do to end this night.
Suddenly Ava gained her strength back and herself back. Yes, she was 28 now after 62 years. Mysteriously. But there was a reason she was doing it.
All those years I spent dry as a desert while everyone was wet with love, she thought.
Adam looked at her and Ava smiled.
"I know." She said, "Let's go."
They walked to the gate of the building only two steps ahead and then boarded the lift and went on to floor 7.
In the elevator Adam spoke to Ava.
"Why are you doing this? You know you cost me a life." He asked,
"Don't question my decisions. I am a product of ten years without love." Ava spoke with malice in her speech.
She felt angry, like a heated ball of flame was rising in her. Her eyebrows went up and her eyes bulged. She kept a straight face as if to not show her anger. She walked briskly towards the door 307 and when she reached it, she looked at Adam who, without any questions, unlocked it.
Inside the apartment smelled like wine. There were Thanksgiving cards scattered on the table and the two big windows in the living room were decorated with glitter strings and wall hangings.
Ava turned to the old wooden table besides the door in which were neat shelves of photographs. They were old, in sepia colour, in black and white and some from the digital cameras of early 2000's. Two couples. A man who had strong jaw and a set of jet-black hair neatly pulled back with Bryllcream in the black and white picture had grown a thick beard in the sepia picture and had grown significantly old with wrinkles on his head in the picture taken from the digital camera.
She stared at the woman. She had been all dolled up in both black and white and sepia pictures but was sitting on a wheelchair in the digital camera one. Still, they looked happy, so happy, holding one another. She imagined them laughing loudly in this house watching their favourite show. They must've had pretty good in bed too, she thought slyly. She never had these thoughts before but they felt like adrenaline to her now.
Adam came from the kitchen with a large knife in his hand held with a piece of cloth.
"The same old way." He spoke.
"No. The classic way. The one where I can fully control what I want to do." Ava said aggressively.
All her instances were coming to her like pieces of random episodes from a T.V show.
Bringing Mark his evening dinner, changing his clothing, feeding him with mashed food, giving him his pills.
Before that Mark had been depressed. Ava had ruined her life by marrying Mark because problems kept piling on top of each other. There was no love, no life in that marriage only work and pain.
My marriage was like a wet used wad of toilet paper, she thought.
Years had gone by and the strain had finally pulled a muscle in her brain.
She grabbed the knife from Adam and headed towards the bedroom. She opened it slowly and walked over to the woman sleeping in her husband's arm. She looked at Adam and he touched the man's forehead. Immediately the man's eyes opened wide and he let out a quiet gasp then went limp on the bed. He was dead.
"Now my turn." Ava whispered.
She gracefully held the knife like a surgeon and brought it towards the woman's neck holding it there. She angled herself and then touched the woman's neck to find a vein. Then put the knife over it. She began applying pressure. Little by little.
"You have to be very delicate with the body because you don't want it to scream."
Little by little blood started trickling out of the neck and the woman woke open with her mouth opening wide for a scream but Ava quickly thrusted the piece of cloth into her mouth. Adam held her legs from behind.
More blood started pouring and the woman was screaming in agony,
"Shit maybe this hippo had a fat skin."
Ava thrusted the knife with a sharp jab and it hit the vein. Within half a minute the woman was dead too. But Ava wasn't finished.
"Now for the rage to unload." She said spreading open her arms.
She pounced on the body and grabbed the knife with both her hands and brought with straight down with a speed of sound.
CRUNCH!
The woman's ribcage broke. The knife went straight to the heart like a bullet. Ava dragged the knife towards the woman's intestines. The bedsheet was beginning to cover in blood.
"For all the days I had to wipe Mark's filthy ass!"
She dragged it further down to the corpse's belly button. The intestines ripped open, spraying loads of blood all over. She continued dragging the knife through the clothes and body.
"For all the days I went without any pleasure!"
She drew out the knife and stabbed the body in the groin.
"All the pleasure." She whispered.
Then she looked at the face. "I was beautiful too."
She stuck the knife to the forehead and got up from the body.

They were back in Ava's house again. Adam looked at her. She was all clean and primped up. They walked over to the fence of the house. The sky was almost becoming blue again, bringing sunlight to the world.
"Date's over." Adam said,
"I never remembered why I was on a date with you until I forced myself into thinking about it." Ava said.
"Well, the devil does have a charm." Adam laughed. Ava sighed and gave a smile.
"A date with the devil." She spoke.
"Sometimes the only option is to kill." Adam said,
"Right."
Ava looked over at the farmhouse over the hill, the lights were turning on. The farmer would soon start to milk his cows. The world would start its day.
"Adam. I think it's time." Ava said,
Adam put forth his hands and Ava grabbed them. She felt a spark light in her brain as she opened her eyes. Suddenly the moon turned to an eye. The sky spun showing planets and stars. She could see something, a light. It was warm and comfortable, she wanted to grab it but the energy was draining faster. She tried to focus on the light, there were numbers floating around its corner and strange symbols. It had an aura of purple rays circling itself. She heard a metallic squeal coming from it and then-
She was back.
Only now, she was bent, her face jagged with wrinkles, eyes too weak to see properly and legs too weak to stand. Her body ached all over. She looked at the sky and it was normal again.
Adam took her in the house and laid her on the bed.
"Get some rest." He said,
"Hmm..." Ava spoke, her voice crackling, "Am I forgetting something? Something really important?"
But Adam was gone. Her date; the devil, was gone.
She closed her eyes for a moment thinking about the newspaper headlines today then a sudden pain blasted in her heart. Then she grabbed her thigh. Clutching both her heart and leg she screamed into the pillow. But no one would hear her suffer. Suddenly she began gasping for breath.
Tear streaked her face as she gasped for a sucking breath but it was just impossible. Soon her vision turned off, everything went blank as she let go of her heart and leg. Then she felt something disconnect from the brain, she couldn't hear anything. Then her movement got restricted. But before the brain died, she knew what she had missed,
"Oh shit. I forgot my diabetes pills." That was her last thought.
