III
Ava opened them and she felt a gust of wind hit her. She looked around to see that she was in the car again. It was going very fast, she looked at the driver's seat and Adam was driving with full attention. Then she heard the police siren. Yes, this was the real world. She was back into it. That must've been a dream... a hallucination of some kind.
"What happened?"
"You passed out and I brought you to the car but the waiter thought it was an act and that we were trying get off the restaurant without paying the bill but there was no time. You were shivering and..."
He took a sharp left turn into a small alley,
"Well, the convenient cop was nearby and now he's tailing us."
Another swerve barely missing the fence. Ava looked behind, her hair flying all over her face. The cop was still on them.
"Tell you what," Adam said, "Go to that glove box."
Ava opened the glove compartment and felt a cold metallic handle. She pulled it out and saw it.
"Shoot the tires!" Adam shouted as he curved past another car parked on the road.
The air was freezing, the sun was almost out. She could see bird flying above in the sky, the night was almost over. They reached a bridge railing which was a famous tourist attraction, below was water from the nearby sea. The car engine whirred as Adam braked the car and began taking a reverse.
"Shoot!"
Ava grabbed the gun and turned around. The police car was coming at them with hurling speed and so were they. She placed her fingers on the trigger and tried to aim but the car was too shaky for a good aim and she had never handled a gun before.
The police car siren went off and Ava pulled the trigger. A loud noise boomed in the alley as the Shelby's back glass broke and shattered. Ava screamed at the noise and dropped on her seat. The bullet went flying through the window and it hit another car on the left making it beep.
"Missed! Another!"
"Adam I can't! Make this stop!"
"No time Ava. Just shoot! Don't be scared."
Ava was crying now, either this was a dream or that was. Regardless she got up. Her ears were ringing with the sound of the previous bullet but she took aim and the tires and this time kept her arm straight and strong. She fired the gun.
Immediately, Adam swerved to right while going back, the police car went forward and a small blast was heard as the tired burst. As Adam reversed the car further, Ava caught the glimpse of the police car driver. He was a fat guy with no beard and on his face the expression of surprise hanging. She saw his line to collision and gasped. The police car was headed straight to railings of bridge below which was the sea.
She closed her ears and eyes. Still, she heard the sound of the crash and the splash.
