II

It was 4 when they stopped on a street which would have pretty busy in the regular time, there was Starbucks, McDonald's¸ Shopping stores, general stores, Pharmacy. The car came to a halt and Adam began to rotate the window up using the lever.

"The only curse of old cars." He said smiling.

The night was still dark. Only a little light shone through. The streets were empty though this was busy place and you'd find early morning joggers going to the park wearing headphones or drunk people finding their apartments. Ava actually saw these people far away. There must've been a bar nearby.

They entered this place which was called Deville's Diner. From outside Ava would've definitely passed this restaurant as an old and closing one running by an old lady and her husband trying to make a living but once she stepped inside her eyes blew wide open. At the earliest of the hour, when people usually wake up for using the toilet, there were fifty or more people neatly settled in their seats scattered all around the place.

They were heavily dressed, wearing red silk robes and thick shouldered blazers. All of them old but some young. Ava looked at Adam and he smiled again; his face filled with delight.

"Told you I know the prefect place. Seems like all these people are here on their dates." He said,

They were led by a short man whose hair was pulled back and oiled well. He sat them on the window seat and his sharp, piercing eyes looked at them,

"Welcome to Deville's Diner, it's a pleasure to be in your service. What would you like to have?" The waiter asked holing a pen and a small notebook in his hand.

Ava picked up the menu and so did Adam. She looked at the dishes and surprisingly it was very different from a traditional one but then this wasn't a traditional restaurant.

"We'll start with some appetizers, what about Fingers? What are they like?" Adam asked,

"Well, they are your usual fingers, deep fried with a crispy layer. It comes with a thick red sauce prepared with PB."

"What would you like darling?" Adam asked,

"Uh..." Ava quickly scanned the menu since she was starving, "I'll go with some fruit salad and a glass of wine."

"Oh, c'mon now Ava, you've got to eat. Make it one fruit salad, one plate of fingers, two glasses of wine and anything else?" He looked at Ava,

She shook her head.

"Okay cool. We'll decide the main course afterwards if that's fine."

"All good sir." The waiter said as he wrote down their orders and carried the menus away.

"So" Adam said clasping his hands together, "Who are you, Ava?" He asked,

Ava frowned, "I'm a person... why are we doing this?"

"To know you better of course. Tell me what do you think about psychology as a practice."

"I graduated with Psych honours so... it's profitable." Ava said smilingly.

"Do you really think a mind can solve another mind?"

Ava looked at him, his eyes went into a stare, they seemed hypnotic and his face looked so professional as if she was sitting in front of someone with great knowledge and insight.

"I know a mind can relate to another mind."

"But it's not a hundred percent solution. Something's always different."

"Each one's unique. If we treat a brain like an organ designed to execute functions necessary for survival then look at two simultaneous brain scans' keeping in check that they are both responding to same stimuli even then we'll find difference... no two brains think alike, not even twins or for that example, cojoined twins. Our body remembers stimuli so does our brain, it records and saves it and uses it in time of need for our survival."

"You are so intelligent." Adam said, he kept his hands on hers on the table, "I wish could hear you talk forever."

Ava blushed, "I did give a good lecture at our university." She spoke.

The rest of the conversation was filled with feverous talk of scientific jargon and occasional agreement nods and burst of laughter. Ava found herself losing, she felt safe, she felt that spice coming back to life as she drank her wine and gazed at Adam's beautiful eyes. Oh, she could swim in them, tell him how great it would be to just walk hand in hand under the mistletoe and tell him that she loves him.

The waiter arrived with the food. He gracefully placed each of their dishes in front of them and asked if they are ready for the main course.

"Just a couple of minutes." Adam said,

The waiter seemed like he wanted them to hurry but he was called by another customer sitting at the end of the room.

Ava looked at her salad, there was tomatoes, bananas, pineapples, lettuce, berries. It was served very well. She picked up her fork and began eating. She was thinking about doing this again already. He had won her heart for sure so much so that she was ready for doing this again. But thoughts of Mark plagued her again. It reminded her of something, that was she is not who she was. She had tried to keep it at bay but it seemed like the blocked memories were leaking out of her brain's barrier. Something wrong had happened. She was at fault!

Ava looked at Adam and blinked. It all seemed suddenly awkward, the room, the people, they weren't even eating they were just sitting and talking holding their spoon and forks and knives. This place, why would it be open? Why did she agree to a date at 3 AM?

Then she noticed something else, she looked at Adam's plate. He was using his fork and knife to cut the fingers which were deep fried. He cut one finger and red clotted blood appeared on the plate. He dipped it in deep red sauce (was that blood!) and brought it towards his mouth and ate it. Ava could see small hole in the finger, that's where the bone was. She looked at another intact finger and looked at her hands. Her heart rate raced. Oh, what had she done? What had she done?

Adam was eating deep fried human fingers with blood sauce with a smile on his face and she was sitting right in front of him, whishing if he could love him forever.

Mark! She thought,

What had she done? Ava clenched her fist and brought down her head.

"What's the matter Ava?" Adam spoke,

"No. NO!" Ava screamed,

"Ava... Ava listen to me!" Adam said, "Ava it's alright. You are just hyperventilating."

Adam murmured something, it was a whispery and fast. She felt herself losing conscious and she closed her eyes.
