Chapter 1

First of all, I want to shout out all my Caribbean Babies reading this.

Drop the name of your country.

Colin stiffened in my arms; it was this moment I knew that the relationship wasn't going any further. Colin still didn't want to commit himself to me even though we've been together for five years, and I wanted more.

I pulled away and looked into his eyes, "I'm not ready yet."

I shook my head. "You'll never be ready." I pulled myself from him and stood from the leather couch.

"You're talking about a life-long decision." He trailed off as he began to sit up on the couch.

I shook my head at him.

  Is he for real?

"Of course, it's a life-long decision. It's a marriage." I frowned as I looked at his face that showing all the things he was thinking. "You know what Colin. I'm done. I'm done with you." I moved away from him and walked over to my things.

He stood from the couch and walked over to me, putting his hands around me. "Babe, you can't be serious. We've been together for five years."

"Then why can't you commit yourself to this relationship?" I defended. I needed more. I can't just stay his girlfriend; I had to be more.

"Babe, I'm 100% committed to this relationship." I rolled my eyes at his Yankee accent.

"No, you're not. I saw you kissing Donneka, and what was your excuse, "Babe, it was an accident." I ignored it, but I can't continue like this."

"It was an accident." I rolled my eyes at his lie.

"So, you're telling me that you accidentally put your mouth on hers." I tried so hard not to get upset because when I spoke in Patios and his black ass never understood what I was saying.

"It's not like that Babe." I pulled me closer to him and put his lips to my ears, "We've been together for five years."

I pushed on his chest and frowned at him. That was exactly why I'm serious. I can't waste another five years waiting to see if he would put a ring on it.

No, I deserved so much better.

"You're right Colin. Five years is a long time to waste on someone." I admitted.

"But you love me." He whispered.

I raised my eyebrows at him. I think before I reply, "Do I?" After five years with Colin, I still haven't felt those butterflies that you're supposed to feel in your stomach.

"Are you really breaking up with me?" he asked with a grave face.

I took up my handbag and turned, "Yes, I am." I walked over to the door and started to put on my shoes.

"We've been together since high school." He tried again. I had no idea why he was trying to prolong a relationship that was bound to doom. I knew it definitely wasn't because he loved me.

I nodded, agreeing, "Yes, and that's why I should have known this will never work." I opened the door of his apartment then turn to look at him. "Goodbye, Colin."

I exited the apartment and shut the door behind me. For some reason, I thought leaving Colin would have made me cry, but I wasn't crying. In fact, I've never been this content about a failed relationship before, but I couldn't take it anymore. I just finished college, and it was time for me to start my life. If Colin didn't want to start his life with me then fine, but I will not be wasting a next five years on him, especially since he's cheated.

My parents didn't struggle their way into America just so that I could be some Yankee's girlfriend.

I was born for greater things, and Colin just didn't fit for the life I planned for myself.

I ran down the stairs and exited the apartment building.

I felt the cool October breeze hit my face, and I smiled.

Was it weird that I was happy that the relationship ended?

No, it was time for me to move on to greater things.

I unlocked the chains on my bicycle then jumped on it. I started peddling down the road to my parent's house. I still lived with my parents, but it's about time I go off on my own.  I am only 22, after all. I was ready to take on the responsibilities of being an adult, paying bills, and having a place of my own. I couldn't do all of that without a job, so I continued living with my two loving parents.

I lifted my hands in the airs and let the wind pass through it as I continued peddling. I laughed, maybe I should have dumped him long ago then I would have been even happier.

I passed a stop sign, but before I could pull on the brakes, a car came around the corner too quickly. My bicycle collided with the car, causing me to fly off the bicycle, landing on the ground over the car's front.

I groaned in pain and looked up at the beautiful sky.

  Am I going to die?

Is this the way I die?

I heard the car door open, but my mind was fixed on looking at the sky as the pain surged through my body.

Someone came hovering over me as I looked at the sky.

"Are you okay?" a loud breathy voice asked.

I rolled my eyes and continued looking ahead at the clouds. "Are you okay?" the person repeated.

I opened my mouth slowly. "Mi luk like mi arite to yuh?" (Do I look okay to you?)

"Ugh." the man asked in confusion.

I sighed, "No, I'm not. I think I broke something." I groaned.  My head and back took a really hard hit from the ground.

The man walked around to my side, making me see him clearly.

  A white man!

  Of course.

He bent down on his knees, and he was able to see him clearly. He had jade green eyes, wavy dark hair, a straight nose and arched cheekbones. He was very handsome and well put together. He pushed his hands under my back, causing me to tense up and groan.

"It's okay; I'm going to lift you and put you in my car."

I raised my brows at him. "Why?"

"Because you've just been hit by a moving car and you need to go to the hospital." He answered.

If I could facepalm self, would, but my hand was also in pain.

  "Are you ready?"

I nodded my head to confirm. He pushed his arms under my body then lifted me in his arms. He slowly stood up with me. This was the first time anyone except my dad held me in bridal style. I shook my head at my crazy thought.

He walked removed one arm from me as he opened the car back seat door. He slowly placed me in the car, making sure he didn't cause any damage.

  "Remember my bicycle." I urged.

He shook his head, "Instead of thanking me, you're telling me to go for the instrument that caused the accident in the first place."

I frowned at him and rolled my eyes, "Why would I want to tell you thanks when you're the reason I'm like this."

He laughed, "I'm the reason." He touched his chest then looked across the road. He pointed at the big stop sign, "That is a stop sign, and if you know road rules you should have known to stop. I have the upper hand here."

I rolled my eyes, "Tell that to a judge."

"You're crazy." He fumed but before I could answer he shut the back door. He walked over to his open driver's door and entered the car.

"Wait! What are you doing?" I shouted, and I try to move but end up causing myself more pain.

"Are you blind?" he reversed the car and started to drive down the road. "I'm taking you to the hospital."

"You left my bicycle," I shouted.

"Do you really think I would put that thing in my car?" he asked rhetorically.

I rolled my eyes and looked around the car. It was an Audi; I saw the four circles before I hit the vehicle.

The seats of the car were coated with fine leather. I brushed my hands over it, enjoying the feeling.

At least I got hit by a rich person.

"What is that supposed to mean?" My eyes widen when I realize I said my thoughts out loud.

I decide to answer his question, "Well, you hit me, so you'll have to pay for my bill."

"Like hell, I will." He resorted.

"You will. I don't have any insurance, and I'm not working so I can't afford to pay for a hospital bill, and I'm not going to pressure my parents either." I lied. Of course, I have insurance. Who in their right mind wouldn't have insurance?

He reminded silent and continued driving.

"I can sue you."

  He laughed "With what lawyer?"

"I'm a paralegal. I know some pretty great lawyers." After four years in college studying paralegal, I had met many lawyers who would be willing to help me in the blink of an eye. I only had to ask.

He chuckled, "Baby doll, all the great lawyers work for me."

I frowned at the name. I wasn't a baby doll.

"Don't call me that." I scolded then calm down, "What do you mean?"

He ignored my statement, "Baby doll, have you ever heard of Wayland's Law?"

  Who hasn't?

Wayland's Law is the most successful law firm in New York City, and everyone in New York knew this.

  I nodded then answered, "Yes,"

He laughs, "Well, baby doll, you're driving with Whyatt Wayland, my family owns the company."

Well then, my life as a paralegal is finished.
