Arc 1: The prince and the wolf (Part 1)
Five years had passed since the disappearance of Capricorn. The fact that his carriage was attacked by a high class demon when the boy was only 10 made it pretty easy to assume that He was dead. However, no new Capricorn had been born since then.
Some people think that he was still alive somewhere out there. Others believe that the reason why no new Capricorn had been born is simply because his twin brother was alive. They believe that because of this, the Skill still had a living owner and it could not pass to a new child. The ones who started this theory was surprisingly (or not) the Deimos', the family of the deceased Capricorn.
A figure scoffed at that information. Like they care enough about a 'demon child', the teen thought bitterly.
"Let's go." A voice spoke.
And the figure disappeared.
...
A young boy cheerfully dashed trough the streets of a shady district in the capital of a small human kingdom. Dressed in rags, no one would ever suspect that he was actually the prince Remus Lightwood, the second son of the king. It was interesting to see how different people would treat you according to what you wear.
What was a prince doing there, you might ask. Well, he's visiting some friends of his who lived there. Why did the king approve of this relationship, you might also ask. Well, it was not like he knew or cared. All he cared about was Remus's elder brother, Alexander, the perfect prince and heir to the throne. Remus, on the other hand, he was just a round of disappointment according to his father. At first, Remus tried his very best to impress his father. Sadly, no matter how hard he tried, he could not escape from the shadow of his brother. So he gave up on becoming the perfect son for the king and instead constantly snugged out and went to places his father would never dare to go to: The Forbidden Forest and The Shady District (leave it to his father to come up with the most literal names ever). During the trips to those places, he became friends with a couple kids and a pack of wolves.
Today, The Shady District seemed more, for the lack of better words, agitated...
"Hey, do you know what's going on?" Remus asked his friends.
"There's a new face in town and everyone is saying that he's a necromancer." One of his friends, Jules, answered.
"Look! There he is!" His other friend, Toby, exclaimed excitedly while pointing towards a teen. Said teen, who looked only about 4 or 5 years older than Remus, had snow white hair and blood red eyes. He was wearing a midnight blue cloak and carried a pitch black staff. And... was that a black owl in a suit standing on the staff!?
Having read about necromancers before, he was pretty sure that the owl was actually a demon.
The necromancer and his demon walked into a large shack. And, being the curious ten-year-olds that they are, Remus and his friends went after them. Once inside the shack, the doors closed and locked the kids in.
"What are you doing here?" The teenage necromancer asked in a soft yet stern voice without even looking back. The demon, on the other hand, turned his head backwards with a loud sound which sounded like a neck being snapped, successfully scaring the kids.
"W-Well... We saw that you were new in town and we wanted to welcome you..." Madeline, one of the girls in the group improvised. The white haired teen turned around, raising an eyebrow.
"And we heard you were a necromancer! Can you show us your magic!?" Helena, Madeline's tactless twin and the last member of the group, exclaimed, earning a facepalm from everyone in presence, including the owl demon.
"So let me get this straight..." The red eyed male said as he rubbed between his eyes. "You heard that I was a necromancer and the first thing you do is follow me into my house where I can easily get rid of you without anyone noticing anything... And that's not even mentioning that Dante here..." He gestured the owl "... can literally wipe you off the face of the planet in one second if he were a demon. You do know that curiosity killed the cat, right?"
"Satisfaction brought it back though." Came the reply from Toby.
"Touché." The teen said.
"You said 'if Dante was a demon'." Jeff pointed out. "Does that mean that you're not a necromancer?"
" Oh, I am a necromancer and Dante is really a demon. But you didn't know it back then."
Before anyone can say anything else, the doors opened and the bell rang. A sad-looking woman, most likely a noble according to her clothing, came in with a baby. The baby looked pale and lifeless.
"I heard you were a necromancer." She said. "Please, can you bring my baby back? She's all I have." She cried.
"Of course." The teenager responded. "However, I am not Virgo the Graveyard Flower so sacrifices are needed. You will have to shorten your life span and give those years to your baby."
"Yes! I'll do..." The noble started but was cut off.
"You must keep in mind that I cannot, even if I wanted to, make your child immortal. While it's true that only after the years you had given her ran out, would she return to be a rotting corpse; she can still die beforehand, like a normal person. For instance, if her head were to be chopped off, she would die even if she still has 69 years left. And that's why I suggest that you only give her 3 to 4 years each time you revive her. Now, do you have the money?"
The woman immediately dropped a small (but not too small) bag of money on the table. The teenage necromancer quickly counted the money and gave her a nod.
"Very well. Follow me..." He said as he took the money and led her into a back room. "... Ignore the children..."
The woman followed him and so did the children. They had never seen a necromancer in action before and they were not going to lose this opportunity.
"Put your daughter in the center of The Pentagram." The albino teen said, pointing at a Pentagram in the middle of the room. The woman did as she was told.
"Four years?" He asked and the noble nodded. "Very well. Now stay back."
As soon as everyone backed away, Dante flew around The Pentagram and the crimson eyed necromancer started chanting and waving his staff. Remus was completely mesmerized by this. The chanting sounded like singing and his movements seemed like dancing. The crystals on his staff as well as The Pentagram lit up. The sight was kind of creepy, yes, but it was still enchanting and mesmerizing nonetheless.
After a while, the light started to fade away and the chanting stopped. The room was in complete silence.
The silence was broken by a load cry... coming from the previously dead baby. The noblewoman immediately picked the child up, calming her down. Both mother and child was crying rivers. They were crying tears of joy. Mother and child had been reunited once again.
"Thank you." The noble quietly said as she climbed up her carriage with her beloved child but it was loud enough for all in presence to hear. The woman looked happy.
This chain of events had changed Remus's mind about necromancers. He was always told that necromancers and practitioners of the Dark Arts in general were evil, that they harm others for their gain. But could someone who is supposedly so evil bring such joy to other people? Yes, he did charge the woman but reviving people was his job and he needed money to survive. And, after all, as his brother had once cruelly taught him, everything had a price.
"Don't you kids have a curfew or something? It's already 5." His train of thought was interrupted by the necromancer.
"It is!?" Jeff exclaimed as he ran in the direction of his house. "Bye guys! Imma go home before mom finds out I haven't done any of my chores and she kills me!"
"Well, see you later." Madeline said as she walked home with her sister.
"Buh-bye!" Helena yelled back.
"Toby's out! Peace!" And with that, Toby went home too. Only Remus and the necromancer remains.
"You know, before I met you, I was under the impression that all who practiced Dark Arts were evil." Remus suddenly said.
"The world is biased and prejudiced. Glad I could change your mind." The other boy replied. There was an awkward silence before the necromancer broke it.
"So... are you going to return to your castle, little prince?" He asked, startling Remus.
"Wh-What are you talking about?" Remus stuttered as his mind raced. How had the teen known about who he was? Only his friends had known about it and it was only after 3 months of hanging out with each other. And he didn't even tell them, they figured it out by themselves.
"You know exactly what I am talking about." The white hair boy said. "But don't worry, I won't pry if you don't want to talk about it."
"They don't care about me anyway. I just have to be there at dinner which is around 8." The little prince said.
"I see... Now, why don't you come in for a couple sweets?" The older boy asked. The royalty's mind raced, thinking about the pros and cons of accepting the offer and about what he has disclosed to the older teen. Should he take the offer or should he not?
"Ok." The young prince finally replied. "You know, I never quite caught your name."
"That's because I never told you." The red eyed boy said with a chuckle.
"Oh... Uhm... Let me introduce myself. I'm Remus Lightwood. Pleased to make your acquaintance." The prince said, extending his hand for a handshake. The other boy took it.
"You can call me..." The teen pause for a second, as if he was thinking. "... Tyrone Evergreen. And the pleasure is mine."
The two boys shook hands and headed inside for some sweets with Dante. Remus found out that he and Tyrone had many similarities. They both liked sweets, they both liked to read and they both disliked their blood relatives. He found out that, apparently, Dante is a chocoholic. He also found out that Evergreen had been in town for 2 days and that Tyrone had once overheard Jeff, Toby, Madeline and Helena talking about him being a prince.
So that's how he knew, Remus could not help but think.
However, they were interrupted by two royal guards.
"Why, hello there!" Tyrone walked towards the guards and said in a sickly sweet voice. "I am Tyrone Evergreen. How may I help you gentlemen?"
"We are here to inspect your shop or whatever this is." One of the guards responded.
"Who is he?" The other guard asked, pointing at the disguised prince.
"Him? Oh, he's just one of the kids in the district. Don't mind him." The owner of the shack replied. The guard gave him a nod. Remus was ignored so he decided to look around for a bit and realized that the door leading to the back room had completely disappeared.
"Hey! What's this!?" One of the guards asked. He held in his hand a... book?
"Oh, that's just a book!" Tyrone waved dismissively. "It's not illegal to own it."
"Yes, but it is illegal to sell this book." The guard said. Remus took a closer look and realized that the book was 'The mindscape: A guide to the arts of the mind - Volume II' - a book about Mind Arts. Since Mind Art were Grey borderline Dark Magic, said book was legal to own but illegal to sell. How in the ever loving fuck would that work, Remus doesn't know.
Suddenly, the doors opened to reveal a middle-aged middle class man. He held a book on his hand, one that looked a lot like the book the royal guard was holding.
"Ah... Mr. Bane. Nice to see you again." The albino greeted.
"Hello, young Evergreen." The man responded. "I would like to return this book."
"The first volume of 'The mindscape', isn't it?" Evergreen said as he took out a pen and a book from seemingly nowhere and checked the book. "Two day. Oh my, a fast reader, aren't you? That would be 36 melliodrachmas."
"Do you have the second volume by any chance?" The middle-aged man asked as he paid.
"I do, actually, but those men..." He pointed at the guards. "... already decided to take it."
"Another time then." The middle class said before walking out of the shack.
"You see?" Tyrone turned towards the guards. "I do not sell books, I rent them. And, according to the law, that book you have on your hands is only illegal to sell. The law never said anything about renting it." He smirked.
A loophole, Remus realized. He found a loophole in the law and exploited it.
The guards grudgingly left the shack after that, finding nothing else to accuse him of. The crimson eyed teen wave them goodbye with a smug grin.
"Well, I must be on my way." The prince said after a little while. "See you soon."
"See you soon." The necromancer replied. "Oh, by the way, you are meeting them, aren't you? Oh, don't look so surprised..." He said upon seeing Remus's tensed face. "Dante can smell it. You know what he is."
"Right..." Remus trailed off, realization hitting him in the face like a brick.
"Please, tell them that 'Đan-ta-li-ông và Ma Kết gửi lời chào'. And, please, do not mispronounce it. Can you do that?" Tyrone Evergreen asked, his eyes gleaming dangerously.
"Sure... Gotta go now... Bye..." Remus said with a certain amount of fear.
"Bye!" Evergreen responded, waving him goodbye with a smile on his face.
Remus headed to The Forbidden Forest.
...
"Are you sure that is wise to reveal us to them?" A man with tan skin and black hair, wearing a cape made out of feathers, asked.
"Of course. I believe that the wolves are intelligent enough to not make a move or to not spread the news around until they have evidence, great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great grandfather." The teen replied.
"Can you stop saying that? It's annoying and it makes me feel old." The man said, clearly annoyed.
"Firstly, it IS true and you ARE old as fuck." The teen replied. "Secondly, if it annoys you then I will continue. Now, the wolves in this area... Their element is Ice, is it not?"
"Yes... Now, what are you planning?" The black haired man asked.
"You'll see..." The teen replied.
"You'll see..."
