8- Straight Guy With a Boyfriend
"Okay, uh... damn."
"Is he really that great?" My mom asked, amused at my flustered way of describing every single great thing about Jack. "Mom, you don't understand. The way he laughs, the way he smiles, the way he talks- OH MY GOD!" I exclaimed.
My mother laughed, "Your father wishes you would be this passionate about girls, Alex. You do realize you're going to have to tell him-"
"No, I won't," I cut her off, "He's barely home. How can I tell him if I never get to see him" My mom was quiet "Okay... so how was Jack today?" She asked, quickly changing the topic.
I smiled a bit wider, "He was- I'm not sure how to explain it. I didn't even know he was going to be at the pool, and then he started to choke on my candy, then he made a couple inappropriate jokes that I'm not going to repeat in front of you" my mom raised her eyebrows, "and then he made a joke and called me his wife and I couldn't freaking breathe! It's like my breath got caught up somewhere near my heart- and though I know he was joking I couldn't help but feel all warm and fuzzy inside!"
She smiled, "That's really cute Alex. Are you ever going to tell him how you feel?"
I shook my head rapidly, "No! Never! Do you know how many friendships get ruined when someone confesses their feelings for one person? Also, I know he won't like me back because he's probably straight! Like, things can't get that perfect"
She gave me a look of sympathy, "You said he's probably straight, what if he isn't" She asked. "If he has a pinch of homosexual in him then I swear... what if he doesn't like me like that- oh mom I'm overthinking this!"
"Alex. Calm. Down." She gripped my shoulders, "I don't want you to spend your entire summer hung over this boy. Enjoy it, spend time with your friends, don't worry about lovey-dovey drama cause one day you're going to look back and laugh at yourself"
I was frozen and silent. Is it possible to not explode with happiness whenever he speaks? Can I just hold back my feelings? Can I be just a friend? "I'm going to go to sleep. Now." I said uncomfortably.
My mom smiled and ruffled my hair, "Goodnight space prince"
"Goodnight mom"
She then closed the door leaving me in complete silence. I waited a few moments to grab my phone. As I did so I saw yet another missed call from Vic. I groaned and unlocked the phone.
"What do you want Vic?" I asked through the phone.
There was silence before I heard him respond, "... Holy shit Alex, you are not good at hiding that you're gay!" he basically yelled.
I scoffed, "Who said I'm hiding it? And besides, why should that matter?"
"Do you not want Jack to know you have a crush on him"
"I don't have a crush on him" I mumbled through the phone, suddenly finding a great interest of the hem of my shirt.
"Oh really? You just, I don't know, you seemed to talk to Jack the entire time. And according to Kellin, he's never heard jack talk about you and I've never heard you talk about Jack so what is this instant friendship thing?"
"Listen, I just started talking to him this week. Somehow we just get along. However, I now hear about this Kellin guy for the first time ever and to find out you're dating him?! I'd like to hear about how you two met" I said.
I heard Vic laugh on the other line, "He's been coming to the bowling alley a lot recently and a couple weeks ago he said he just wanted to see me. And like you know he was sweet and pretty and I kinda just love him a lot so yeah."
"A couple weeks ago?" I asked completely shocked.
"I thought it'd be weird and I don't. It's weird hearing that your straight friend has a boyfriend right?"
"I mean technically you're not so straight anymore-" I pointed out.
"No shit Alex but, I just didn't know how to tell you the right way. So... yeah" he ended.
"The greatest gift in life is friendship, and I have received it"
