1- The Oddest of Summers
"Give me more!" I insist as I pounded on my parent's door. The house was silent without my constant nagging. I stared intently at the wooden wall that kept me from annoying my parents. The knowledge that they keep from me, I crave it.
"Will you please stop bugging us, Alex" my father opened the bedroom door, looking weary from his day of work. It must be tiring mapping stars with the hope of finding something new. It's like searching for a needle in a very large haystack.
"Please tell me more" I begged. My mother walked up behind my father, looking over his shoulder. She smiled and whispered into his ear. I jumped eagerly waiting to be let in.
My father smirked and gripped the handle. Once the door opened wider, I ran and jumped on the gray comforter of the bed. My parents laughed and lay down next to him.
"What do you wish to know, Alex?"
"Tell me more about space... what's new?" I said, my voice was a bit high from all my excitement. My mother pulled me close in her arms and stroked my floppy mess of hair, while my father started to speak.
"There isn't really anything new with space, we just haven't figured out all its secrets yet"
"Tell me!" I squealed, my father laughed. The buzz of electricity surges through the house and the heater kicked on. "Hmm. What don't you know already..." my father pondered.
"Tell him about the nebula!" My mother said. My eyes traveled back to my father, the light in his eyes seemed to brighten. "Alright Alex, there is a nebula," he said. I scoffed "Tell me more!" I dragged off the last syllable.
"This is a very special nebula. It's the most symmetrical nebula recorded and..." he trailed. "And..." I poked him for keeping me waiting. "This nebula looks like a red square" he finished.
My mouth fell open, "No!" he nodded, "That can't be it, can it?" I asked, clearly offended that they think that this small yet huge discovery is enough to put me to sleep in peace. "If we tell you the rest about it will you go to bed?" My mother asked. I squinted at her, "Fine..."
My father then continued to tell me more about the nebula, "It was found orbiting the constellation Serpens, and it's approximately five thousand light years away from the milky way-"
"It's not actually just a square, it's an hourglass of light and energy that appears to be in the shape of a square." My mother cut in. Then there was silence.
"Please tell me that's not all!" I whined. My mother picked me up and started to carry me out to the hallway, "We can't tell you all the secrets now can we?" She laughed. I stared at her, my mouth agape.
At some point in my plotting of getting revenge at my parents, I realized that we were back in my room. I was back in my bed, my mother was sitting on the edge tucking me in. "Now don't worry my little space prince... the world won't stop spinning. One day you will go up there-" she pointed up at the ceiling filled with glow in the dark plastic stars, "-and you will see it yourself"
She closed the door and left me alone on the dark side of my room. I waited in my buzz lightyear bed, for the footsteps to get quieter until I ran to my window.
I sat on the sill and stared up at the vast ocean above me. The stars were small fish that swam in the blue depths of the sky. The way the bright moon illuminated the streets of the neighborhood was purely magical. Nights like these could surely happen more frequently.
The thought of one day going to the moon or perhaps more beyond intrigued me. The idea of something being more than it appears to be, fed my thirst of knowledge and curiosity.
Crickets chirped as this was the beginning of summer. Some would say this was the beginning of the season of new friendships. Not for me. I was going to do something...
...and this was surely going to be the oddest of summers.
"Don't tell me the sky's the limit when there are footprints on the moon"
