Chapter Six

Point of View: Virgil, First Person
Timeline: Present Day

After a while of sitting in silence, I figured it was okay to start asking him some questions.  Surrounding the nightmares that have bothering him so much and all.

"Hey, um, Dad?"

I'm not sure how I expected Patton to react, but for Patton to flinch – physically and noticeably FLINCH – that certainly wasn't what I expected at all. In response, I immediately felt myself start sinking inward, not wanting to bother him with my own sad existence.

"Sorry," I said, quietly, avoiding his eyes. For a second... it almost looked like Patton was... was afraid of... me? No, his nightmares weren't about me... hurting him were they? Oh my gosh, of course that's what it was. What else could it be? "Da- Morality," I corrected, a stuttering mess. "Your... your nightmares aren't about... me, are they?"

Patton's eyes widened slightly, surprised. But... the guilty look in his eyes... so I was right.

"Um, kiddo-"

"You don't have to tell me," I said, cutting him off. "In fact, I don't want to know. But please – there's nothing that could happen that would make me hurt you, okay?" I assured.

For some reason, Patton still looked a bit uneasy. But still he slowly nodded.

"Morality?"

"Y-Yeah kiddo?"

"Do you believe me?" I asked quietly.

Patton didn't answer.

At least he was honest.

I slowly got to my feet, adjusting my hoodie. "I would never hurt you, Patton. I promise – and I don't break my promises," I said, turning and leaving, not bothering to see him in respond.

In the hallway, I ran into Logan, who hastily backed away from the hallway, eyes wide. I didn't say anything. He had to be eavesdropping – only that would explain that deer-caught-in-headlights look he was giving me.

I didn't say anything, simply brushing past him without another word, silently furious. I heard small footsteps behind me and I ignored him, turning the music up in my headphones a little louder to drown him out. I just wanted to be alone.

Logan stopped me at the door to my room, grabbing my arm. I sighed, annoyed as I pulled down my headphones, music faintly filling the air. "You have to tell me," he spat out. "Are you..." Logan cut off, squirming uncomfortably – very much unlike him. What was this about? "AreyouandPattondating?" he rushed, cheeks flaring a bright pink and disappearing down his neck.

It took me a moment to process what he was asking me. "Patton and... me? Dating?" I stood there stunned. "Oh my gosh, you're serious."

Logan squirmed again (which I can't deny was quite satisfying) and nodded.

"Patton and I aren't like that at all," I countered. "We're... not close like that. What made you think so?"

Now Logan was absolutely red, embarrassed. "I saw you guys hugging this morning, and um..." he dropped off, avoiding my eyes. "I apologize for jumping to conclusions."

"Patton and I are not dating," I emphasized. "Actually," I admitted. "Roman and I are dating."

Logan's jaw dropped. "Really?"

For the logical one of all of us, he really is quite dense at times. Geez.

I felt my cheeks heat up and I nodded.

"I thought you too had broken up – months ago," he said, frowning.

"Well, we did," I admitted. "But we've been together for... quite a while now," I stated.

Logan frowned. "I knew that Prince still liked you, but I assumed you were not going to be in a relationship because of Roman's potential mortality thing."

"I... that was definitely why I broke up with him before, but now I see that I can protect him – be as careful as I can and protect him. If he started dating someone else, we'd be in the same scenario all over again anyway."

"I definitely see your point, but what if you can't help hurting him?"

I froze at that. "There the heck is this coming from?" I said lowly. "You never said anything to me before. Now you find out I'm dating Prince and all this comes out. Why now? What difference does it make?"

"I didn't realize you were dating – feelings are not my area of expertise," Logan explained. "I'll admit I thought higher of you than the others – I thought that almost seeing him die would snap you into your senses to see that the two of you being together is not a thing that can happen."

"Well it is," I snapped. "I would've hoped that you would be more supportive – knowing that I care too much to let anything hurt him, but now at least I see where we stand."

Logan didn't say anything, jaw set. "Do you know that Patton told me his nightmare? The one he's been having for the past week?"

"You know about that?" I was surprised. He went to Logan for a nightmare? Seriously? The side with hardly a fragment of feeling inside of him, he thought that was a good idea? "Well I guess you didn't help much, did you?"

"I told him to talk to you," Logan snapped in return, cheeks turning pink with anger.

... Patton did talk to me. I didn't realize that it was because Logan suggested. I just figured he told me because out of all of them, I was the most likely to understand. "Why do you think Patton found you the day you had your seizure? Because he was coming to talk to you about his nightmare."

My mouth opened and closed. He... he was right. Patton's only ever come into my studio a handful of times, each because something was terribly wrong – he tried not to disturb me the best he could when I was in the studio, seeing as if I'm in there it's like an unwritten do-not-disturb sign.

"Now that we've gotten that over with," Logan huffed. "I'm assuming that you intend on going to find Roman, considering that you seem back to your typical health."

"Yeah, I am," I felt my muscles tense at his tone. "Are you going to try to stop me?"

"This is a bad idea, Anx. No, not a bad idea, an awful idea. A horrible idea, Anx and I didn't argue with you earlier because I hoped that you would see reason. But I cannot simply let you go without at least making an attempt to stop you."

"I'm going, Logan. This is Roman we're talking about. If it was Patton out there, wouldn't you go?"

"No," he replied. "Even if it was Patton, I would stay because I have a job to do. How exactly do you think Thomas could even function with both his morality and logical thinking out of the equation?"

"You can't really mean that. Logan, you love him, don't you?"

"I never said it would be easy," Logan countered. He stopped for a moment, squirming. "Is... is it that obvious?"

I nodded silently.

"Look," I started after some more silence. "I'm going. And there's nothing you can do to stop me," I said, pushing down the handle to my door.

Logan's hand landed on my arm. I froze at the contact.

"Please reconsider, Anx. This is a very, very bad idea."

"I don't care," I responded. "This is Roman. I'm not going to leave him. He could be hurt, he could be dying, Logan. I'm going – that's final," I said, glaring at his hand on my arm.

Logan got the message and pulled back, raising his hands defensively. "Fine. But don't try to come to me, asking me to fix the mess you made," he snapped, turning around and walking down the hallway.

I sighed, closing the door behind me. I didn't want to fight with Logan, but I couldn't believe he would do that – especially if it was Patton was in Roman's place.

Was he really so heartless?

I shook my head. No need to get all bent out of shape about Logan's decisions. Right now I needed to focus on finding Roman.

And praying that he was okay.

But why would he not be back by now? What was keeping him so long?

I tried to push the terrible thoughts spinning around in my head as I quickly packed my own bag – black, of course – and stuffed enough clothes, food, water, medicines, and other essentials for two weeks. Who knew what kind of condition Roman would be when I found him? If I even found him at all...
