Chapter 3
(Apologies for the late update. For a while, I had next-to-no idea where exactly I was going with this story; but now I have more to build upon)
White Diamond rushed into her chambers, her current state of panic taking away from her sense of balance; she nearly tripped over herself multiple times on the way to her room.
"It, it can't be." She quietly stuttered.
She dropped down to her usual meditation spot, crossed her legs and placed her hands accordingly. She managed to calm herself down enough to focus.
She focused on the presence, the aura of Black Diamond; she hadn't felt it in countless years, so she wasn't entirely confident in her ability at the moment. 'It's been so long; I forgot to keep checking in.' White thought.
She hardly had a chance to center on it. Suddenly, beams of black shot out from her eyes; it seemed she was rejected from even getting close to Black's mindscape. The black beams hit above the door and through the hall, collapsing whatever part of the temple was hit.
She was shocked and gasping. "That's powerful." She shuddered. She gathered herself, then with a low tone, confirmed to her terrified self, "He's back."
Blue and Yellow burst into the room. "I think it came from in here." Yellow said, looking around.
"White?" Blue noticed White's state of distress.
"White, what happened?" Yellow asked, going by her side and helping her up. "There were strange beams of light coming from in here."
"We're all in danger." White whispered.
"What? By who?" Yellow asked.
White slowly lifted her head to meet Yellow's questioning gaze. "Black, Diamond."
To say that revelation shocked Yellow would be an understatement. She stood straight up, completely stiffened.
"What do you mean?" Blue asked, beginning to feel uneasy. "I thought there were only ever four of us."
White sighed, then began telling the story, "This was long before either of you emerged; before even your gems were ever perfected." Yellow and Blue sat down to listen. "Within the universe's earliest conceivable memory, there was light, and light given form. It was me and Black; the natural opposites of the spectrum. We spent centuries together, finding our way and place in the universe. One millennium, I learned how to make a gem. Another being like me and Black, to keep us company." White chuckled, "She was sort of like Spinel in a sense. She was always cheerful and always wanted to entertain." Her slight smile disappeared. "It's been so long; I've forgotten her name. The three of us found a planetoid rich with the materials necessary to make more gems."
"Homeworld?" Blue inquired.
"No," White sighed again, "It would be a couple billion years before I founded or even found Homeworld." She took a pause. "We spent a long time making gems, building a home for everyone to thrive as a species. Some time later, Black became curious and went out exploring. He found other sentient life in the galaxy. I'm not sure what happened there; but, when Black returned, he was different. Maybe making all those gems, creating life was what changed him. He grew a desire to control even what he created. His desire to control grew into a desire to dominate."
"Then what happened?" Yellow asked, slightly scared but also intrigued.
"Me and my old little friend decided to talk to him about it, but he was stubborn; it escalated into a confrontation. He came to realize I would never join him in his mission." White's face contorted into an expression of pain and sorrow; she covered her mouth as she tried stifling her sobs. "So he decided to punish me." She began sobbing. "He destroyed everything we created, and, he obliterated her." White covered her face with both her hands. "He took her sweet," She sniffled, "innocent, delicate form into his hands and, crushed her into dust."
White's intense emotions began reaching Yellow and Blue, the way Blue used to with her old powers. They never knew White as one to break down like this; but they understood as they felt her sorrow, fear, and utter trauma for the first time that Black Diamond was a threat not to be underestimated even by the combined force of the Diamond Authority. These emotions were locked away, boiling up inside White for billions of years; even Blue could barely comprehend the strength of White's pain. Blue and Yellow surrounded and embraced her, letting her mourn on their shoulders.
"I'm not entirely sure what I did next," White continued speaking amidst the sobs, "but I snapped. I took away his light and banished him from this dimension. Now he's back. I don't know how he escaped, but that only means he's grown stronger."
"What do we do?" Yellow asked.
"Evacuate. Evacuate Homeworld. Send them to Earth, away from us. Black Diamond will be after me." White immediately answered, ceasing her sobbing.
"I, don't think there's enough room on Earth for everyone." Blue thought.
"Until the matter is resolved," White said, standing up, "They'll have to live on whatever ships we have. They can. . . live over their oceans or something. They can not be here when Black Diamond is."
"I will send Spinel ahead to help the Crystal Gems prepare." Blue said.
White became silent for a moment. "Yes. Very good." White looked Blue and Yellow dead in the eyes. "Blue, Yellow, you two, may have to say goodbye to Spinel. And to others."
Blue and Yellow's faces dropped. "W...Why?" Blue asked.
"I won't be able to defeat Black Diamond alone; I'll need all your help. There's no telling what this crucial victory may cost. Keep Spinel on Earth so nothing will happen to her." White further elaborated.
The thought of potentially never seeing Spinel again deeply saddened Blue and Yellow, but they agreed it was necessary. "I'll retrieve her." Blue said, taking her leave.
After Blue left, Yellow asked White, "White. How certain are you we can win?"
"If I'm completely honest, I'm not.
