Chapter 24: Kaienan - Mistress of Art

Calli's shooing motion causes me to burst into laughter, so strong that it causes me to teleport away before I had planned. I arrive back at my home, the gray stone glowing in the sunlight. There is a flicker of movement from the entrance and I frown, creating a shield of air around myself, as close as a second skin. Who would be waiting at my home, inside my home? I am a few paces from the entryway when someone steps out into the light. Siera. Her silvery hair is unbound, glimmering with the sun as it rests atop her tan shoulders. It reflects rainbows back into the world with its transluscense, filled with color and yet none at all. It's a symbol of her gifts, mistress of the arts. She can create anything at all, so long as she pleases it. She dips her head to me in a show of respect.

"Lord Kaienan."

I dip my head in turn. "Lady Siera, Mistress of Art."

Her polite smile grows into a true one, especially now that the formality of the greeting is done with. "I'm sorry for disturbing you at your home, but Sibuna told me you required my assistance?"

My lips tilt into a smile. "I do need your aid, but I did not expect you to come so quickly."

"You have given me assistance in the past, and Sibuna looked worried. So I came as quickly as I could. What is the matter, Kai?"

No longer having to follow the formal greeting rules, she quickly reverts to her familiar use of my name. I would expect nothing less from my oldest friend. She's as close as a sister to me, despite our lack of blood relations.

"Did Sibuna not tell you?"

She gives me a sheepish smile. "He didn't have the chance. I came here before he could."

I snort out a soft laugh, but it quickly fades away when I think of the threat to Calli's life and soul. "Anu wishes to steal away the soul of my mortal soul-bonded before she can become immortal. I would like to commission a form of protection for her, to protect her against death."

Siena's smile widens. "I can easily do that." Suddenly she steps up to me and punches my cheek in a surprising motion before she pats it. "I'll add something else as well. Congratulations on finding her." She hesitates for a moment. "What is her gift?"

My smile is soft. "Light."

"Ah. Lovely. I'll be back in a few hours."

My eyes widen in surprise. "So soon?"

Siena twists and raises an eyebrow at me. "I assume she did nothing to incur Anu's wrath and obsession?"

"Nothing beyond being my soul-bonded and receiving the gift of resurrection."

Siena pats my cheek again. "Then I will do it quickly just so that she may be safe from unjust fear."

I bow my head in gratitude. "Thank you, Siena. I have no words to express my gratitude."

Her laugh chimes into the air as she teleports away from my view, back to her studio and forge.
