Chapter Twenty-Four: Restoration And Rehabilitation

Trigger warning: blood, mentions of anxiety attacks, various medical equipments.

Virgil's P.O.V.
I remember bits and pieces of the way to the hospital, but nothing more. I remember Patton offering to steer, and the sound of a galloping horse. I remember one time that I looked down at Roman and seeing that he was still breathing but was unconscious. I do not remember arriving at the hospital, handing Roman over to the staff, or being taken to my own hospital bed.

The first thing I remember after completely blacking out is opening my eyes and seeing a bright white light. For a moment, while my mind was still clouded with sleep, I thought I was back in the Afterlife. Quickly, I realized that I was just staring up at a ceiling light. Sitting up slowly, I saw Milly sitting next to my bed.

"Oh hey," she said. "How are you feeling?"

"Okay, I guess." I mumbled. "How long have I been out?"

"Well.." she glanced at the clock on the wall. "It's 3:30, so about nine hours."

"Nine hours?" Milly nodded. I sighed, thinking that even though my nine hours were induced by an extreme anxiety attack, I at least got nine hours of undisturbed sleep.

"Wait, where's Roman?" I asked.

"Rehabilitation unit. Stable." I sighed again with relief.

"Thank God he's alright. What's happened since we got here?"

"Well, Roman was rushed to the ER, Patton and Camille were taken somewhere for malnutrition, I think. You were taken to a couple different places because you were unstable. About four hours ago, Owen went to go get Thomas and fill him in. As of now, everyone's in one of four rooms in the rehabilitation unit. If I'm correct, that means that you and I are here, Logan and Patton are in one room, Camille and Owen are in another, and Roman and Thomas are together."

"Do you know if I can leave the bed?"

"Not sure, but the nurse should be coming back within the next few minutes. He's been going room to room on an hourly basis for the past six or seven hours." We sat silently for about a minute, waiting for the nurse to come back around.

"Hey," I said, getting Milly's attention. "I missed you." She smiled, looking down at the floor.

"I did too." she whispered. "I also listened to Welcome To The Black Parade."

"Good job, kid." I said with a smile.

"Where'd you learn how to fight with a sword?" Milly asked. I smiled, thinking back to my days of training.

"Roman taught me when we were kids. Not sure how I still remember anything, but I do." When I finished talking there was a soft knock at the door before it opened to reveal the nurse we were waiting for. He, like all of the staff in the hospital, was a robot. The difference between him and Doctor was that he was designed to look more human than robotic. He seemed more like a video game character than anything, to me at least.

"Ah, Mr. Sanders, you are awake." he said. "I am Henry, your nurse and caretaker for your stay here. How do you feel, sir?"

"Good, or at least a lot better."

"Well, that's fantastic. Let's see, your vitals are just fine, you stabilized a while ago, your wounds are gone.. Alright then, sir, do you think that you could eat or drink something?"

"Definitely."

"Excellent. Anything you'd prefer?"

"I'll take anything other than fruit or bread."

"Alright then, I'll bring you some food and water in a couple of minutes, but first I'm going to remove this drip and these monitors." I nodded as Henry began to take away the cords attached to the heart monitor and slowly take out the IV in my hand.

"I should be back in about fifteen minutes. The bathroom is to your left, and you can go see your friends if you would like." With that he left the room, rolling the equipment behind him. I quickly got out of bed and looked at Milly.

"Going to see Roman?" Milly questioned.

"Of course. Do you mind showing me where he is?" She nodded and hopped up out of her chair, dashing down the hallway and opening up one of the doors. I followed her into the room, closing the door behind me. I saw Roman lying on the bed, which was only slightly inclined. Thomas was sitting on the bed next to him.

"Virgil," he said, standing up. "Oh, it's great to have you back!" He opened up his arms, silently asking to hug me. I smiled and wrapped my arms around him.

"I missed you, Virge, we all really missed you." Thomas said as he let me go and pulled away. I glanced back at Roman, and Thomas smiled even wider.

"We'll give you two some privacy." he said, ushering himself and Milly out of the room. As soon as he shut the door, I ran to Roman, kneeled down, and kissed him softly. He put his hand on the back of my head, running his fingered through my hair. After a few seconds we pulled away, both of us smiling breathlessly.

"I missed you so much," he said. "I missed you more than I can explain. Are you alright?"

"Yes, I'm fine. What about you?"

"I have a lot of stitches and bandages on my back, but I'm fine otherwise." I sighed with relief again.

"I thought I was gonna lose you, Roman." I said, taking his hand in my own. For the first time, I noticed just how filthy I was; my skin and clothes were covered in dust, dirt, and blood, a hole was ripped in my shirt and jeans, and the taste in my mouth was far from pleasant.

"Look, Virgil," Roman said. "I'm sorry for every bad thing I have ever said about you. I'm sorry for every time I made you think I didn't care. I'm sorry that I started all those stupid fights. Please know that I love you, darling."

"I know you love me, Roman. I know you're sorry, and I accept your apologies with my own. I'm sorry for acting like I hated you, and for ending our friendship all those years ago. Thank you for saving me, Princey." We both smiled as he squeezed my hand. I glanced up at the clock, seeing that I had about ten minutes left before Henry would be back with food, and I wanted to wash up a bit before then.

"I have to go, Roman." I told him. "Can you stand?"

"Sadly, no." he replied. "I have to stay here for a couple more hours before I can even sit up anymore than this." I sighed and stood up.

"Well then, I'll be back in a couple of hours. I love you, dear."

"I love you too, darling." With that I walked out of the room and back to my own. I used the bathroom, and while I was in there I found a packet with toothpaste and a toothbrush. So, I pulled the two items out of the bag and brushed my teeth for the first time in days, gratefully enjoying the minty fresh taste that replaced the foul one.

When Henry returned with food, I thanked him and ate almost all of what he brought. It was simple things, vegetables, cheese, a salad, but all of it tasted like a gourmet meal to me. After I finished eating, I teleported back to my room to grab some clean clothes. I forced myself to not look at the floor and to not linger, as I couldn't bear to be in the same room as Patton and I were murdered.

I went back to the hospital to shower, washing myself quickly yet thoroughly. I couldn't help but notice, though, that for the first minute or so of my shower the water ran colored below me. After I was dried off and dressed, I walked along the hallway trying to decide who to go see first. Leave Patton and Logan alone for some more time, I thought. They'll probably want to spend the next week with each other, and I don't blame them. I'll go and see Camille and Owen.

Camille's P.O.V.
When we reached the hospital, the nurses scooped up an unconscious Roman and whisked him away. As soon as Roman was out of his arms, Virgil collapsed, lying on the ground shaking and crying for a few seconds before going unconscious. The staff whisked him away too, then they came back for me.

They swept me away in a wheelchair, seeing how skinny and pale I was and how I leaned heavily against the wall. They took me to a room somewhere and gave me an IV attached to a drip that was giving me the nutrients I'd been missing out on for, well, most of my existence.

They brought me a little bit of food and told me to sleep. They said not to get out of the bed for anything other than using the bathroom. I fell asleep by myself, and I woke up with Milly standing next to me.

"Hey," she said. "You feeling better?"

"Yeah." I replied. Milly stood up from her chair and walked to stand next to me.

"Patton had to explain to the doctors how you were alive. Took a while to get them to believe it. Took a while to get us to believe it. Patton explained everything to everyone about an hour ago. It's about 1:30, by the way. You've been asleep for like, four or five hours. Anyway..." She trailed off, seemingly lost in thought for a moment.

"So you're Camille." she stated. "Well, you wanna talk? Wanna listen to some music? I could leave if you want, or I could just sit down and shut up. Your choice."

"I wouldn't mind a conversation. Here," I moved over, sat up, and patted the bed next to me. "Sit down." She sat down next to me and smiled.

"What do you wanna talk about?" she asked.

"Um.. well, you. Tell me about yourself."

"Oh, alright then. Well, I'm Art, and as the name suggests I love almost everything artsy. Singing, acting, movies, shows, plays, songs, drawing, painting, crafting, lots of stuff."

"What's your favorite song?"

"Well, it's hard to choose because there's so many that I love already, but if I have to pick I think I'll say it's either Thank You For The Venom by My Chemical Romance, or Miss Jackson by Panic! At The Disco."

"Do you have a preferred hobby?"

"Painting is definitely my favorite, but I also really like drawing."

"That's pretty cool. So uh, do you like everyone? Is there someone you're particularly close to?" Milly looked down for a moment or two, clearly thinking about a good response.

"Well, I haven't really had time to get to know anyone other than Virgil. He's a lot different than I thought he would be."

"How so?"

"Well, you'd think someone who is a living embodiment of anxiety would be pretty rude and distant, but he's actually really caring and funny. Now, don't tell him I said that, but it's true. Don't tell him I said this either, but he took me under his wing and he really acted like a father figure to me." Milly smiled but turned away so I couldn't see it.

"Hey, I was wondering," I said, getting her to turn back to face me. "If Roman is Creativity, wouldn't there not really be much of a difference between what you two stand for?"

"Huh, never really thought of that before. I guess you could think of it like this: he comes up with ideas, I execute them. He is Creativity, I am Creation." I nodded, not quite expecting that answer but still satisfied by it.

"Hey, so," she said. "I'm gonna go stay with Virgil for a while. I'll see you later." She stood up and waved, then left the room.

Logan's P.O.V.
We ran into the hospital, and immediately the staff took Roman, who was unconscious, away to be treated. As soon as they were gone, Virgil collapsed and fell unconscious. More staff rushed over and took him away. About a minute later they took away Camille, then Patton.

"I love you, Logan." he said as he was taken away in a wheelchair. I was going to say something back, but he was gone too quick. I sat down in one of the many chairs around me, holding my head in my hands.

"Sir, do you need medical assistance?" a nurse asked me.

"No ma'am, I'm alright, thank you." I kept thinking about Patton, wishing that I could be with him. I didn't try to follow him and the staff, however, as I knew it would not be wise to intrude while they are giving him medical attention. I still wished that I could see him. He had been gone for five days, and as soon as we get him back he's gone again. Though, this time he was only gone for about an hour before Owen, Milly, and I were allowed to go visit him and Camille. It would be another hour before we could see Virgil or Roman.

"Logan!" Patton exclaimed as I entered his room.

"Patton," I whispered. "Oh love, I missed you so much." I moved to embrace him, careful not to touch any of the equipment attached to him.

"Gosh, I thought you would never find us." Patton said, beginning to tear up. "Thank you for keeping your promise to rescue us."

"Thank you," I replied. "For keeping your promise to protect me. But please, Patton, don't protect me ever again." I smiled as Patton giggled.

"You know I can't not protect the people I love." I reached to grab Patton's hand and cup it in my own.

"How is everyone else?" he asked. "Is Roman okay? Virgil?"

"The staff won't let anyone see them yet, so I don't know what's happening to them."

"What about Camille?" I hesitated to answer, as some unreasonable part of me did not want to go anywhere near Camille or even talk about her.

"I haven't been to see her yet, but Milly and Owen are with her." They're not safe, whispered a sneaking thought in my head. You can't leave the children alone with her. I knew that these thoughts were irrational and emotion-fueled, but I could not get them to go away.

"Then, could you do me a favor?"

"Anything, love. What do you need?"

"Please go check on her." I sighed and nodded, then kissed Patton's hand and left. When I got in the hallway, Milly was standing outside of Camille's room.

"Hey," she greeted. "How's he doing?"

"Fine, and her?"

"Asleep. That's why I'm out here and not in there. We're still allowed in, though." I nodded and walked past her, going into the room behind her. Inside, Camille was laid out on the bed, seemingly peaceful in her sleep. I sat down in one of the chairs in the room and looked at her. She was indeed unhealthily thin and abnormally pale. She was supposed to resemble and eleven year old girl, and yet she looked seven at the most.

"I'm sorry," I whispered. "I mean to hold no grudge. I know it was not truly you who did these things. Still, I believe that my unwanted emotions will lead to my distance from you." Without another word, I stood and went back to Patton.

Thomas's P.O.V.
My anxiety shot through the roof in a matter of seconds. I sat curled up on my bed for nearly forty-five minutes before it all very suddenly went away. I was left with relief and confusion, and I knew that something big must have happened. Still, I decided to wait and see if someone came to tell me anything before I just showed up in the Mind.

At some point, I began to feel relaxed. A wave of relief and comfort washed over me. For the first time in days, I felt energetic, ready to go and do something. Please stay, please stay, please stay, I begged the positive emotions.

"Thomas!" I heard someone yell a while later. I turned to see Owen standing in my living room.

"Thomas, Thomas, you've gotta come to the Mind. Here, I'll take you, just come on!" He ran to me and grabbed my hand, teleporting me into the Mind.

"Is this.." I questioned, looking around. "Is this a hospital?"

"Yeah, in the Imagination. That's not important though, we saved Virgil and Patton and Camille!"

"You what?"

"We saved them! We did have some.. issues, along the way, though. But it's okay, everyone's alive and safe now."

"What do you mean by 'issues?'" Owen turned away for a moment before he answered.

"Roman got really hurt, Virgil passed out, Camille and Patton are sick or something. But like I said, everyone's alive and safe now. Here, I'll show you where they are." Owen lead me by the hand down a few hallways and pointed to a few rooms, telling me who was in each one.

"Hey Thomas," Milly greeted as I passed by her. "Good to see you. As you can tell, some stuff's happened. If you want a better explanation than good ol' Naivety there most certainly gave you, Logan's in there." She pointed to the room behind me, the one that Owen said was Patton's. I nodded and patted Owen on the back, seeing as he was pouting over Milly's comment. Then I knocked and entered Patton's room.

"Hi guys." I said.

"Salutations, Thomas." Logan greeted.

"Hey kiddo!" Patton waved.

"Oh, it's good to have you back Patton. Are you alright?"

"Yeah, I'm fine, just a little tired." I smiled happily and turned to Logan.

"Logan, I need to talk to you outside." His eyes widened a bit, but he kissed Patton's cheek and followed me out of the room. We walked down the hallway until we were out of everyone's earshot.

"What are you needing to discuss?"

"I just want to know what's been going on."

"Oh, alright then." He explained everything to me. I said nothing, completely focused on what he was saying. Just as he finished, one of the nurses appeared next to us.

"Pleasure to see you Thomas," the nurse greeted, reaching out to shake my hand. "I am Henry, and I am the nurse and caretaker of four of your sides for the day. I am happy to inform you that you may now visit Roman and Virgil Sanders, though the latter is still unconscious." Henry turned and walked away, disappearing into Camille's room.

"I'm going to go see Virgil." I said to Logan. He nodded and said, "I'll wait until he's awake before I go to visit him. For now I'm going back to Patton." I smiled and giggled quietly.

"You guys really love each other, don't you?"

"Well, yes, one might say that we do both hold intense and deep attractions for each other."

"You love each other and you know it."

"Oh hush, Thomas, go see Virgil." I laughed and walked away to Virgil's room. As Henry had said, he was unconscious, lying on his bed attached to a drip and a heart monitor.

"I'm glad to see you again, Virgil," I whispered. "I'll come back when you wake up." I grabbed his hand that didn't have the IV in it and held it for a moment before letting go and leaving to see Roman.

"Thomas!" Roman exclaimed as I entered his room.

"Hey there Roman. Feeling alright?"

"Yes, I'm in a bit of pain, but otherwise I'm alright." I sat down in a chair next to him and we talked for a long while about everything that had been happening in the past couple days. After a few hours had passed, there was a knock at the door and Virgil and Milly walked in the room. I excused myself and Milly, leaving Virgil and Roman alone.

"You holding up alright?" Milly asked as we stood in the hallway.

"Yeah, I guess. I'm just glad to have everyone safe and alive again."

"Did Logan tell you about the box that Owen found?" I turned to face Milly directly.

"No, what box?"

"Camille has it now. I'm not sure what's in it, but she said it's very important."
