Chapter Thirteen: The Second Reading

Trigger Warning: blood and gruesome imagery.

Tir– –erso– P.O.V.
Roman awoke that next morning with Quiln, his messenger owl from the Enchanted Forest, at his bedside.

"Rossane wishes for you to come see her today." Quiln told Roman. "She says it is urgent. You must bring Virgil, Patton, and Logan with you as well."

Roman woke the three, forcing them to rush through their morning routines. Then they all teleported off to the kingdom's castle. They were taken to the castle's secondary conference room where Rossane was waiting for them. When the five were alone in the room and situated at the round wooden table, she began.

Roman's P.O.V.
"I need to do a reading with you four." Rossane said. "I had a dream last night, and I need to know if it's true. Now, all of us must join hands." She grabbed one of my and Patton's hands. I took Virgil's hand, him taking Logan's, and him taking Patton's. I felt a strong pull, as if I was falling. The room around me faded away, leaving only darkness and the four people around me.

"Whatever happens, do not let go of the hands you hold." Rossane warned. "A reading with this many people is unpredictable. We could see one person's future at a time, or simply an overview. Remember, most importantly, you cannot change the future. What you see is not exactly what will happen, but rather a simplified warning. Say nothing, and do not let go." There was another pull, and suddenly we appeared to be in a dark room.

It was so dark that I couldn't even see my hands or anything else. A soft whimper sounded from the corner of the room, echoing against the walls in a way that I couldn't tell where it came from. The whimper grew into a muffled cry and scream.

"Help me!" a muffled voice yelled. My heart shattered as I found similarities between that voice and Virgil's.

"V-V-Virgil?" said another muffled crying voice, which sounded much like Patton's. "I-Is that y-you?"

"P-Patton, it's m-me!" yelled Virgil.

"Oh t-thank God! I thought, I thought.." Patton's voice trailed off. Suddenly light filled the room as a door opened. I quickly saw that the floor and walls were rocky and uneven surfaces. I turned to look behind me, and there I saw the most horrific thing I'd ever seen.

With their hands chained to the wall behind their backs and cloth around their mouths were the images of Virgil and Patton. Virgil squeezed my hand so tight that I thought he'd take my hand off. The images of Virgil and Patton had blood covering them and on the floor around them. Both were crying profusely.

"Why hello, Virgil, Patton." said a voice to my right. I turned, seeing the open door and a dark figure standing there. The images of Virgil and Patton were completely silent.

"Don't worry, I'm not to fear—" The figure's voice cut out, then the voice went from loud and echoed to fearful and quiet. "Please, I didn't want to do it! I'm not who you thi—"

"She's right," said another voice, one that sent chills down my spine. "She is not who you think she is. And she most certainly didn't want to do anything thing she did. That is why she she's all yours now; she's of no use to me anymore, as she had completed her job." Virgil's grip on my hand was getting somehow tighter. The images and voices faded, eventually leaving us five in darkness. We all tuned to Rossane.

"I am sorry boys, so very sorry." she said softly. Virgil's grip loosened, and I tuned to look at him. He was shaking, fear practically written all over him. Once more I felt a pull, and we appeared in my room. There was a scream, which I immediately recognized as Virgil's, from down the hallway. I suddenly came shooting out of my bathroom and ran out of the room. The scene looked exactly like my dream. Then the image was gone.

Just as quickly as the last image left, we all reappeared inside of Logan's room. He was sitting on the floor with his knees to his chest and his face hidden, leaning against his desk. On the wall above him there were two small holes, which I could only assume he had punched. Again, the image was gone quickly, only this time we did not see another image and were returned to the secondary conference room. Rossane tightened her grip on my hand. I glanced up at her, seeing her eyes squeezed shut and her jaw clenched.

"Beware..." she whispered. "Beware the corrupted one... She is the corrupted one... Camille... Beware the corrupted one..." Rossane let go of my and Patton's hands. I looked back at Virgil, who seemed so utterly confused and horrified that he looked as though he would burst into a fit of screaming and tears at any moment. Looking around more, it appeared that everyone looked the about same.

"W-We need to.. t-to leave." Virgil stated. His breathing was ragged and he was still shaking.

"He's right," Patton agreed. "I can't stay here anymore, I don't know where I want to go but I just can't stay here."

"Young man, you can't escape the future." Rossane said sadly.

"Don't you think we know that?!" Logan yelled. All of us were silent at his sudden outburst. "I want more than anything to keep them out of those chains. I never want to see Patton like that, but I know I will! I would rather die than ever see Patton chained to a wall, drenched in blood, gagged with a cloth, but I know I will! We know we can't escape the future, but we're still going to try!"

The four of us gaped at Logan, who was standing up, his fists clenched tight with rage. Slowly, he loosened his hands and sat back down. Patton pulled Logan into a hug, shock and fear still lingering in his eyes.

"Forgive me, Rossane," Logan apologized. "I agree with Patton and Virgil, we do indeed need to leave." Rossane nodded with understanding. Virgil reached out to take Logan's hand again, Patton doing the same. A second later, we were back in the living room of our house.

"Are you guys alright?" Patton asked us. None of us answered; none of us really needed to. It was obvious that Logan was raging with fear, Virgil was definitely having a silent anxiety attack, Patton was surely terrified, and I as well.

"I think now," I said. "Now maybe the best idea is to just stay together. We have no idea when all this might happen—"

"No." Patton disagreed shortly. "We do know. There's no way that the readings and the voice and the dream aren't connected somehow. The Corrupted One or Camille or the dark figure, whatever that thing is supposed to be, it's coming back in a few days, and it's gonna take me and Virgil." His voice shook as he spoke, obviously terrified that he had come to that conclusion.

"So yes, we should stay together. But not to protect each other but to.." He trailed off, looking down at the floor.

"But to spend our last days together." Virgil finished. I pulled my hand out of his and threw my arms around him, burying my face in his jacket. A few tears slipped from my eyes as I felt a strong pair of arms wrap around my back, followed by two more pairs.

"Hey," I said, lifting my head off Virgil's jacket. "There's at least one good thing: the Corrupted One apparently is the one talking to you Patton. Obviously, she lied about Logan not loving you, maybe she could have been lying about killing you. The reading never showed you and Virgil's death, only your capture; me and Logan and anyone else who's willing could find you and save you guys."

Patton's P.O.V.
A long silence fell over us as we thought over what Roman said.

"You promise to find us?" Virgil asked.

"I swear on my life," Roman swore. "I will not rest until I find and save both of you."

"I as well," Logan pledged. "I will look for you for as long as it may take, for as long as my heart beats."

"I won't give up," I promised. "I'll fight whatever it is that's holding us."

"And I will too," Virgil vowed. "I will never stop fighting to get free, to stop whatever chains us."

"And I," said a fifth voice. The four of us looked up and towards the hallway. Standing next to the kitchen were two children: one boy and one girl, both looking very similar to Thomas.

"I will fight alongside Roman and Logan." said the girl.

"I will too." said the boy.

"Who are you?" Virgil asked the two.

A.N.
I do apologize if any blood or gore or anything like that has left anyone skipping paragraphs, but I must warn you now that this is by far the least of it. I will try to keep details to a minimum and focus more on emotions and thoughts than pain and imagery. But please, understand that I can't leave much out if I am to have the detailed, emotional, and powerful writing that I envisioned however long ago when I started writing this story.

To clarify, I have yet to have any problems with anyone saying this is too much, I just wanted to say this beforehand to avoid these issues. Another clarification, I speak of violence, gore, and blood in such regards as I am now because there are parts of this book that have yet to be published and/or read that are a bit more.. intense, I'll say.

Anyway, adiós.
